Reclaim the power of food with farmers!

About us

Food is powerful. It can nourish and uplift entire communities. It can also breed injustice and put our planet and health at risk. We work with farmers to grow just, healthy, sustainable harvests everywhere. By keeping seeds in farmers’ hands and strengthening farmers’ knowledge, we help communities thrive. SeedChange was founded by Dr. Lotta Hitschmanova in 1945 as the Unitarian Service Committee of Canada.

  • Today is #GivingTuesday. For nonprofit organizations like SeedChange / Sème l’avenir, this day is a special one. It’s a moment where people across the globe come together to unite around a common goal: showcasing generosity and support towards the causes that matter most to them. Today, we have a unique opportunity to harness the power of collective action and start laying the foundation for the type of world we want to be a part of. On this special day, we’re inviting you to pause and ask yourself: What kind of world do I want to live in? How can I contribute to that vision? If the world you have in mind resembles our vision, it might look like a sustainable one driven by just and resilient food systems, where everyone has enough food to eat, and farmers have the support and tools they need to grow food in harmony with nature, rather than against it. If this resonates with you, join us in making that vision a reality by donating today. Every contribution — big or small — brings us one step closer. ❤️ Donate at https://lnkd.in/e9-SzGVF – We have an ambitious goal of raising $50,000 throughout December, starting today. We hope you’ll join us in making this season the most generous one yet. On behalf of our partners on the ground and the farmers we work alongside, thank you for being part of the change with us. . . . . . #agroecology #seeds #smallscalefarmers #givingtuesday2024 #foodsystems #SeedChange #sustainableagriculture

  • Our Rural Women Cultivating Change (RWCC) partner, PELUM Tanzania recently organized a community dialogue on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) with farmers in Chagongwe village, Gairo (Morogoro region, Tanzania). Addressing SGBV is a critical focus of our work with the RWCC project in East Africa. In partnership with local organizations, we strive to shift social norms and attitudes surrounding violence against women and girls, support public policy implementation to prevent SGBV, and advocate for essential services for survivors. These efforts empower women farmers to realize their rights and more fully contribute to collective well-being within their communities. 📷: PELUM Tanzania The RWCC project is funded by Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada and implemented in collaboration with local partners in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania. In Tanzania, we are proud to work with Pelum Tanzania and Tanzania Gender Networking Programme (TGNP). . . . . . #SGVB #ruralwomen #RWCCproject #seedchange #womenfarmers #agroecology #farmersjustice #tanzania #foodsystems #foodjustice #foodsovereignty

  • We're proud to introduce the Organic Vegetable Seed Production course, in partnership with Canadian Organic Growers. Access to organic, biodiverse, and locally adapted seeds is key to the success of the organic farming sector, yet organic seed availability remains limited. We hope this course will cultivate the next generations of Canadian seed producers who, like us, envision a future where organic seed security and integrity is increased and organic farmers have access to resilient and adaptive seed. Organic Vegetable Seed Production is a self-directed, online, 8 week, comprehensive intermediate course. Through this course, students will develop a thorough understanding of the science and business of organic vegetable seed production in Canada. Students will also learn: 🫘 How to produce organic vegetable seeds 🫘 About the Canadian Organic Standards, certification and regulatory policy in Canada 🫘 How organic seed crop production can be a thriving part of your farming livelihood 🫘 About various seed business models and paths in seed production 🫘 About seed sovereignty, seed stewardship, and Canada’s supply chain 🫘 And much more! This course is designed and delivered by @canadianorganic in partnership with The Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security (SeedChange / Sème l’avenir’s Canadian program) with funding provided by the Continuing Education and Training Association of BC (CETABC). Registration is now open until January 17th, 2025. Find all the details and register at: https://lnkd.in/enNrr_Mm #seed #organicseed #locallyadaptedseeds #canadianagriculture #seedsecurity

  • Food is a fundamental human right. More than ever, we must continue to work towards building equitable and resilient food systems. Adopting a holistic approach to agriculture - one that includes agroecological methods, seed preservation, farmer-led knowledge, and equality in food production - is crucial for global food security and sovereignty. This #WorldFoodDay, let’s recognize the crucial role of sustainable agriculture in addressing the pressing issues of climate change, and in building thriving food systems worldwide.

  • Today is the United Nations' International Day of Rural Women. Rural women are at the heart of our food systems. In the Global South, the majority of women in rural areas are farmers. They grow food for their families and communities, strengthen economies, conserve biodiversity, protect local ecosystems, and build resilience to climate change. Yet despite these essential contributions, women’s farming is often undervalued and constrained by structural barriers, limiting their agency and preventing them from leading in their communities and beyond. Change begins with recognizing women’s vital role in climate-resilient food production and sustainable market development. Upholding their participation, priorities, and knowledge is key to transforming food systems. — We are proud to support rural women farmers through our Rural Women Cultivating Change project, implemented with support from Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada and in partnership with local organizations in East Africa. This project promotes a gender transformative agroecology approach, which we believe is essential for enhancing women’s engagement and resilience in food systems. 📷: Farmer Amina Agustin Mzelu tends to her field in Kikundi Village, Morogoro, Tanzania. #InternationalDayofRuralWomen #RuralWomen #SeedChange
