In honour of Black History Month, we’re celebrating the truly groundbreaking contributions of Dr. Sophia Jones, the first Black Canadian woman to earn a medical degree, and one of the many Black women whose work has advanced science, transformed healthcare and helped to create a healthier future for all women. Dr. Jones was a true pioneer in medicine. Born in 1857 in Chatham, Ontario, she became the first Black Canadian woman to earn a medical degree — a remarkable achievement at a time when both racial and gender discrimination in education, healthcare and civil society were deeply entrenched. In 1885, she graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School — the first Black woman to graduate from that program. Dr. Jones went on to found the nursing program at Spelman College where she was the first Black faculty member. Dr. Jones dedicated her career to improving the health and well-being of Black communities, a group often excluded from access to quality healthcare. Her work challenged barriers in medical education and practice, and her legacy continues to inspire those who strive for equity and inclusion in healthcare. . . . #WHCC #BlackHistoryMonth #WomenInMedicine #HealthcareEquity

For the first time in Canada, a newly published set of clinical practice guidelines focuses specifically on the diagnosis and treatment of mood, anxiety, and related disorders during #pregnancy and #postpartum, marking a landmark step in improving care and outcomes for affected individuals and families. Led by WCH's Dr. Simone Vigod and McMaster University's Dr. Benicio Frey, and developed with experts and individuals with lived experience, these guidelines aim to fill critical gaps in care, providing a standardized approach to treating these common yet under-addressed conditions. Yesterday, Drs. Vigod, Frey and a number of stakeholders, met with the Honourable Ya’ara Saks, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health to announce the guidelines' publication. Dr. Zeineddin is a local Northshore family doctor and business owner. She is the current President of BC Family Doctors, the political and economic voice for all family doctors in BC. She is a healthcare leader, a former negotiator for one of the most significant changes in primary care in the last two decades of BC history, and an advocate for gender equity. She believes that bravery and change are possible when individuals access their authentic selves with greater self-awareness and self-compassion.
