PSA: Guard your business against spear phishing! According to this RCMP report, Nova Scotian businesses lost more than $354,000 last year, and all-told across Canada, that number was more than $58 million! That's a lot of dough. The best defence to protect your business is to proactively educate your employees to recognize and avoid these types of scams. One of the best ways to do this is through on-going Security Awareness Training; there are many companies who offer affordable online trainings for this purpose, using tools such as simulated phishing campaigns and short video tutorials to heighten your employees' ability to sense a scam!

What is the most important question to ask a potential payroll provider? (Hint: think "security"!) As payroll providers ourselves, we'd suggest that question is, "Are you SOC2, Type II certified?" Here's why: SOC2 Type II is an internationally recognized standard that ensures the most stringent security protocols are in place to PROTECT PERSONAL DATA (i.e. any information that identifies an individual) that resides in the payroll software. This typically includes each employee's name, address, telephone number, birth date, social insurance number, e-mail address, employment information, and more. So if the answer you get the that question is "NO", you may want to look elsewhere! (Oh, just for the record, our answer is "YES!" WorkLinks is SOC2 Type II certified - and darn proud of it!)
