The Minister of National Defence has announced that DND/CAF will be exempt from future defence cuts, as Canada seeks to reduce government spending overall. Canada is seeking to accelerate its defence spending to reach 2% of GDP per year as part of the NATO spending targets. This cannot be achieved by making cuts. European militaries rush to catch up on space traffic mapping - Defense News "The number of active satellites in orbit has more than tripled in just four years, according to European Space Agency data. Most of the new space activity is happening in low Earth orbit, where agile spacecraft zip around at 27,500 kilometers per hour, while much of the surveillance by Western militaries is built on systems adapted to decades of tracking relatively static geostationary orbits." US Space Force plans to award 20 contracts for commercial reserve by 2026 - Defense News "The Space Force expects to award as many as 20 contracts over the next two years for private companies to join its Commercial Augmentation Space Reserve, which will create a mechanism for the military to better leverage commercial capabilities both in peacetime and during a conflict....The Space Force’s acquisition arm, Space Systems Command, announced last year it was planning to create a commercial space reserve. The team met with industry in February 2023 and formed a task force soon after to work through legal, policy, contracting and programmatic concerns." France plans low-orbit demonstrator that can target other satellites - Defense News "France plans to launch a maneuverable satellite into low Earth orbit in the next two years that can target other satellites, something French Space Command said is necessary to show the country can take action to protect its space assets.... France wants to avoid putting kinetic weapons in space that would risk creating debris in orbit, and the demonstrator won’t be weaponized, though it may include a “dazzling” capacity...." Satellites need ground support to make sure they are on time and on target, no matter the mission or platform. Finland hosts American and allied artillery drills amid renewed Baltic Sea tensions - Stars and Stripes "U.S. soldiers are firing away north of the Arctic Circle this week as Finland hosts the largest NATO artillery exercise in Europe for the first time since joining the alliance last year. The U.S. Army is training with 27 other nations for Dynamic Front, a 20-day exercise that spans the alliance’s eastern flank with Russia, to include sites in Estonia, Germany, Poland and Romania." Ceremony marks starting point for new Latvian military base - @Latvian Public Broadcasting "Construction of the largest military firing range in the Baltic states got under way officially on Friday, November 15, when a commemorative time capsule was buried in the territory of the new base in Aizkraukle region." Training is essential for building and sustaining readiness for military units. With decades of experience delivering military training for the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and NATO partners, Calian is continuing its training legacy with a new contract for delivering training in Latvia.
