  • This week, we had an incredible event as part of the CDL course Applied Methods in Technology Start-ups (BAEN 508), led by CDL-Vancouver’s Site Lead, Darrell Kopke, at UBC Sauder School of Business. The cohort of 22 students from Sauder’s MBA, Professional MBA, Master of Engineering Leadership, and Master of Health Leadership Policy programs presented their investment recommendations for high-potential ventures participating in CDL-Vancouver’s 2024/25 programming cycle. Over the past 11 weeks, these talented students delved deep into the venture capital ecosystem, conducting situational analyses, market entry strategies, due diligence, and synthesizing their insights into Investment Memos. This week, they showcased their work to an Investment Committee, including: Ali Pejman, FCPA, FCA Praveen K. Varshney, FCPA, FCA Jason Robertson Jenny Yang Maria Pacella The committee provided invaluable feedback and insights while assessing the student recommendations. These presentations not only demonstrated the students’ analytical and strategic abilities but also highlighted the value of experiential learning, giving them hands-on experience in evaluating investments into real-world ventures. A huge thank you to the students, faculty, and Investment Committee for making this a success and helping to provide valuable opportunities to engage in learning about start-ups and venture capital. Follow CDL-Vancouver to hear which venture received the investment in the coming weeks!

The design of medical devices shapes lives--especially in coordination with healthcare policy. That's the message I brought to CDL-Vancouver last month as a guest speaker in their Biomedical Engineering Stream, where the founders of #medtech start-ups work with seasoned mentors to improve their scientific innovations, deepen their understandings of the market, and hone their plans for raising capital and facing regulatory hurdles. Before my arrival in Vancouver, BC, I didn't know the term for someone like me is "end user." The device that someone designed (or that *teams* of someones designed, iteratively) lives in my body. The length of an ICD's battery life (and the presence/absence of recalls), has dictated the length of time between my heart surgeries--which, even when the procedures are considered routine, have disrupted my career, spun up financial & logistical hurricanes, led to periods of extended physical healing from medical trauma, and transformed my relationship to death. Even maintaining the device during the calm between surgeries can shape a life. I've had ghost bills for hundreds of dollars arrive when I never entered a cardiology office, for the interpretation of (perfectly fine) EKGs sent by my device through a bedside Merlin transmitter. I've taken unnecessary 860-volt shocks to the heart due to an error in my software settings. How my body looks in a dress depends on the shape and size of the device. The snapped-off nest of defibrillator wire currently in my heart was once a hopeful design--a new insulation innovation. Both its presence in my heart & our removal attempts now put my life at risk, rather than saving it. And, of course, maintaining a technology inside you requires access to the kind of healthcare system that tech is built for--which doesn't exist in some countries, and which we U.S. citizens regularly face losing reliable access to, depending on who's elected president. The design of this technology even shapes the lives of those we can't see, who live in places we mine for resources. If an ICD were a multi-use device instead of single use, how many acres of forest would be spared from being removed as "overburden" for a mining project? How many communities could remain in those ancestral forests? Since my doctors and I have established that my #LongQTSyndrome can safely be treated with a low dose of medication, I'll be having my ICD removed in 13 days. Not everyone is so lucky. When technologies form a literal lifeline for someone, product designs shapes the rest of their time on the planet. While I didn't get to give my whole planned talk at CDL due to a time management snafu, it was an utter pleasure to be included in this event (and StarFish Medical's #MedicalDevice Playbook) & to meet the doctors, businesspeople, & inventors shaping the field. Thank you for the invitation Tamara Masa Vojinovic & Louis-Alexandre Fournier, PhD, & I hope we will meaningfully cross paths again.
