CME's Dennis Darby P.Eng., ICD.D joined The Morning Rush with Bill Carroll yesterday to talk trade, tariffs and Trump. Listen here ⬇️ Without swift and targeted government action, tariffs will devastate investment, disrupt supply chains, and weaken Canada’s industrial base. CME is calling for urgent government intervention to provide short-term tariff relief, investment incentives, and supply chain support to help manufacturers weather the economic shock.
🚨 U.S. Tariff Threats: Immediate Action Needed 🚨 CME has called on Prime Minister Trudeau and federal leaders to address the severe risks tariffs pose to Canadian manufacturing. These measures could disrupt supply chains, stall investments, and impact thousands of jobs.
Today, CME sent a letter to Prime Minister Trudeau and federal party leaders urging immediate action on U.S. Tariff threats - read below. ⬇️ Canada’s manufacturing sector is the backbone of our economy, supporting more than one in four jobs in Canada and driving more than 60% of our merchandise exports. If U.S. tariffs proceed, they will present an immediate and severe risk to thousands of businesses and workers across the country. Without swift and targeted government action, these tariffs will devastate investment, disrupt supply chains, and weaken Canada’s industrial base. CME is calling for urgent government intervention to provide short-term tariff relief, investment incentives, and supply chain support to help manufacturers weather the economic shock. This crisis has also highlighted the need for long-term structural reforms to enhance Canada’s competitiveness, including the elimination of internal trade barriers, and modernizing our regulatory and tax frameworks. Canadian manufacturers stand ready to work with policymakers and parliamentarians to develop solutions that protect jobs, reinforce supply chains, and position our sector for long-term success. Decisive leadership is needed to safeguard Canada's economy and manufacturing future.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Trudeau announced his intention to resign as Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada following a Liberal leadership race that will take place in the coming weeks. It is likely, but not guaranteed that a federal election will follow in the Spring. CME is very concerned that this prolonged political uncertainty will weaken Canada's ability to negotiate effectively with the incoming U.S. administration in the weeks ahead. In response to the tariff threat, Canada needs a functional and stable government, capable of delivering an urgent and coordinated response to protect manufacturing businesses, workers and families. Despite these challenges CME remains committed to working with members, our U.S. counterparts, and all parliamentarians to oppose harmful tariffs and to advocate for policies that will support Canadian manufacturers, strengthen our shared economic and national security interests with the U.S, and improve North America’s position as a global manufacturing powerhouse.
