Because a few Jian Zhan bowls emit a purple halo when exposed to light, literati have used "purple jade bowl" or "purple bowl" to describe Jian Zhan bowls. The name of this exhibition is derived from this. The exhibition features 135 ancient Jian kiln Jian Zhan bowls and related cultural relics, as well as 298 contemporary Jian kiln handicrafts, divided into five sections: "Ancient Charm," "Sipping the Essence," "Flowing Galaxy," "Unique Ingenuity," and "Passing the Torch." The exhibition systematically and comprehensively showcases the historical culture, artistic value, and craftsmanship of Jian kiln Jian Zhan bowls from the perspectives of archaeological discoveries, cultural connotations, artistic charm, craftsmanship inheritance and innovation, and new development in the new era. Jian kiln, also known as Shuiji kiln, is named after its location in Jianzhou, the seat of Jian'an and Ouning counties in the Song Dynasty. It is an important kiln site for producing black-glazed porcelain in ancient China and a representative kiln site in Fujian. Jian kiln was first fired in the late Tang and Five Dynasties, flourished during the two Song dynasties, and gradually declined in the late Song and early Yuan dynasties. Jian Zhan bowls are the representative products of Jian kiln, characterized by a large mouth and small foot, resembling a funnel, with the most distinctive feature being the constricted mouth. Their overall style is simple and steady, with full and robust shapes and beautiful curves, symbolizing the long history and exquisite craftsmanship of ceramic production in Fujian.
