2025 Chengdu Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in January)
What comes to mind when you think of Chengdu, China? Cuddly pandas or spicy Sichuan peppercorns? Chengdu is in fact a mega provincial capital of Sichuan Province and an economic powerhouse of southwestern China. Moreover, the city’s abundance of cultural and historical sights, together with its laidback lifestyle, make Chengdu one of the most attractive and livable large cities too.Known in China as the "Land of Milk and Honey", Chengdu is blessed with fertile land and plenty of water. Located in central Sichuan, it is one of the country's leading rice and wheat-growing regions. Historically, Chengdu was first settled 2400 years ago, through the centuries it transformed itself into the political and cultural center of southwest China. On top of the economic significance, Chengdu also has a long history of scholarly accomplishments, with some of China's most crucial historical literature coming from there. Today the city is still a highly academic city with numerous top-rated universities and scientific research centers. With a total population of over 16 million, around 9 million reside in the Chengdu metro area. There are 11 urban districts and Qingyang District is considered as the city center with attractions like Whenshu Yuan Temple and Tianfu Square. The neighboring Wuhou District is a mix of historic sites and busy commercial centers like Jinli Old Street and Temple. From ancient temples to stunning natural wonders, mesmerizing folk performances to addictive culinary creations, Chengdu is one of China’s top ten tourist destinations. There are so many breathtaking scenic spots on offer, it will take a few days to just tick off the top sites. For visitors looking for those unforgettable experiences, consider drinking tea with locals at People’s Park, hunt for souvenirs at Jinli Old Street, be entertained by Sichuan opera, test your spice tolerance with Chengdu Hot Pot, and last not least, feed a panda in the Giant Panda Base, etc.Chengdu is the economic and transportation hub of the region, so currently there are two major airports serving the city - Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport and Chengdu Tianfu International Airport. Convenient airport to downtown transfer options are available at both locations, such as airport shuttle, the metro, and taxis. Getting around town is also simple and convenient, as there are 12 metro lines to take you around town and stations have bilingual signs, maps, and ticket machines. Going between tourist attractions, sightseeing buses offer easy transportation.

Winter in Chengdu | My heart was melted by a capybara
|My heart was melted by a capybara.
✨Guys, it's rare to have such a sunny day in winter in Chengdu, so I had to take the opportunity to go out and enjoy the sun. So I went to Qinhuang Lake with my friends~😜
🌟Wow, I was so impressed by the capybara air film by the lake, it really melted my heart🥰, I had to take a picture with it📷, I felt like I became cute too~
🌈Then we went to Tianfu Zhaoshang Garden City, taking pictures of the wild life as we walked. It was full of vitality and the atmosphere of wildness was really great👍, it made me feel immersed in it.
😌The stress of work seemed to disappear at this moment, I felt so much more relaxed, it was really stress-relieving. I think this is a great place to bring kids and pets, a family or friends with their little cuties, taking pictures📸, and then strolling around, it's so cozy~
🤗Guys, I highly recommend you to come here and feel the beauty, I believe you will love it too~💕

The kids went crazy! Chengdu has turned a whole mountain into a slide!
🚗 Less than 1 hour from downtown Chengdu, climb the Great Wall, camp, barbecue, and enjoy tea around the stove...
There is also a unique jungle roller coaster 🎢 and jungle slide.
Relaxing and exciting‼️
❇️ Climbing the mountain:
The total length is 1,680 meters, with an altitude difference of 260 meters. There are a total of 5️⃣ beacon towers. The steps to the first one are the steepest, so take it easy. Some steps are too high for children who are about 1 meter tall, even higher than their knees. The first 3️⃣ beacon towers are relatively steep.
❇️ Descending the mountain:
1️⃣ Take the [Jungle Roller Coaster] from the Hero Square at the top of the mountain to the 4th beacon tower.
2️⃣ Walk 100 meters down to transfer to the [Jungle Slide] and go directly to the foot of the mountain.
3️⃣ You can also take a bus down the mountain from the top.
⚠️ You can control the speed of the jungle roller coaster.
⚠️ On-site CNY 60/person, including roller coaster and slide (can be purchased separately). Half price for those over 1 meter.
⚠️ Ticket 🎫 CNY 30 (including shuttle bus). Free for those under 1.4 meters.
❇️ Other activities:
✔️ Barbecue and camping: "Beacon Nature Camp" at the 3rd beacon tower, with a large lawn and a canopy.
✔️ Incense and prayer: Climb to the end of the Great Wall and walk about 100 meters to Jinlong Temple.
✔️ Paragliding: There is paragliding from the observation deck at the top of the mountain to the foot of the mountain.
✔️ Children's facilities: There is a dinosaur world, electric park, and non-powered park at the foot of the mountain.
🕰️ Opening hours: 9:00 to 17:00, no entry after 17:00.
❇️ Tips:
❶ There are vending machines in each beacon tower, so you don't need to bring water and can travel light.
❷ There is no shade on the Great Wall.
❸ We brought three pieces of clothing: a light down jacket to wear at the foot of the mountain; a down vest to wear when climbing the steps in the sun; a windbreaker to wear in the shade after climbing high.
❹ A few kilometers from Luodai Ancient Town, you can climb the Great Wall in the morning, visit the ancient town in the afternoon, and have lunch in the ancient town.
The hotel in Chengdu that everyone thought I went abroad for
Discovered Chuanxing Yinli Hotel, a hidden gem.
It has accommodation, afternoon tea, a chess room, art exhibitions, a reading area, etc.

The one-stop experience is amazing.
It's close to Kuanzhai Alley, and the transportation is very convenient, just a few hundred meters from the subway station.
As soon as you enter the hotel, you are greeted by a unique sense of design.
The interior space is cleverly laid out, and the color scheme is harmonious,
creating a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.
There are quiet corners for reading and relaxing, and the tables and chairs are arranged at will.
Art exhibitions are displayed in the stairwell, with a variety of styles that make you stop and savor them.
Micro cement, walnut wood.
The small courtyard outside is elegant, and the hotel also incorporates courtyard garden design, with greenery and small items scattered around.
The stairwell art exhibition is unique, and you can feel quiet and comfortable in the hustle and bustle.
The check-in experience is even better.
The interior decoration of the room is exquisite and elegant, and the intelligent control is convenient, you can turn on and off the lights and adjust the air conditioning with just a word.
The room is also equipped with a massage chair,
which is a highlight, and after playing, you can lie down and relax your body and mind.
Here, you can eat, drink, play and sleep.

Temple with Amazing Vegetarian Restaurant in Chengdu
#100waysoftravel
I went to Wenshu Monastery (Wenshu Yuan) in Chengdu and was impressed with its rich history, spiritual atmosphere, and cultural offerings make it a fascinating destination. No wonder, this temple is one of the most significant Buddhist sites in Sichuan Province
Wenshu Monastery has a history of over 1,000 years, dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), this temple is dedicated to Wenshu (Manjushri), the Bodhisattva of Wisdom.
During the Qing Dynasty, This monastery gained prominence when a Buddhist monk named Cidu meditated and was believed to have transformed into Wenshu after his death.
The monastery's traditional Chinese architecture is stunning, with intricately designed halls, towers, and pavilions surrounded by lush gardens, and The Great Buddha Hall and the Hall of Wenshu are among the highlights, housing impressive Buddhist statues and relics.
The monastery houses over 500 statues, including Buddhist deities, historical figures, and mythical creatures. It preserves rare Buddhist texts, sutras, and calligraphy by notable scholars and monks.
Despite being located in the bustling city of Chengdu, Wenshu Monastery offers a tranquil retreat. Visitors can meditate, light incense, or simply enjoy the serene surroundings.
After exploring the entire monastery, before I left this temple, I took a rest in one of their tea houses, and enjoyed Chengdu's famous tea culture while relaxing in the peaceful setting of Wenshu's monastery garden. I also had my lunch in the vegetarian restaurant owned by the monastery, which serves traditional Buddhist dishes made from fresh, local ingredients.
Visiting Wenshu Monastery provides not only a spiritual journey but also a deeper understanding of Chengdu’s cultural heritage and the enduring influence of Buddhism in China.

Among the many ginkgo forests, I chose the riverside park in the city center, which is easy to reach.
📍 Huoshui Park, Jiaolong Port, Shuangliu District, Chengdu
In the sunlight, the golden leaves are reflected in the water, shining brightly.
Let's go see the pandas in Chengdu, the city of pandas.
Location: Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, Chengdu, China
Highlights: Book a morning ticket on trip.com to see the adorable pandas. In the hot weather, you can only see the pandas early in the morning. After that, they go inside to eat, sleep, move around, eat, and sleep in air-conditioned enclosures. This park is huge, and small carts (for a fee) can help reduce walking distance significantly. There may be a lot of people, so it's best to go when it opens. One tip we wanted to try is to take the cart to the last station (before another exit) and then walk back, but we only read about this after finishing our visit. No one can resist these cute animals.
Location: 1375 Xiongmao Blvd, Chenghua District, Chengdu, Sichuan, China, 610016

For a memorable evening in Chengdu, there are plenty of vibrant activities beyond clubbing and drinking. Here are some unique ways to explore the city after sunset:
1. Explore Chengdu by Bicycle
Chengdu’s many parks and green spaces make for an ideal nighttime biking experience. The cooler evening weather is perfect for cycling, offering a peaceful way to explore the city without the risk of sunburn. Biking is a great way to soak in Chengdu's charm, with well-lit pathways that bring the city’s nature and architecture to life.
2. Visit Anshun Bridge
An iconic landmark in Chengdu, Anshun Bridge is especially stunning at night, thanks to the beautiful lighting along the bridge and river. The bridge’s reflection on the water creates a magical scene, perfect for a relaxing evening stroll and photography.
3. See the Twin Towers in Chengdu’s Financial District
The Twin Towers are known for their impressive digital light animations. Each night, the towers light up with creative animations that captivate visitors with their beauty and technological artistry, making them a popular attraction in the Financial District.
4. Enjoy the Digital Billboard at Taikoo Li Shopping District
Taikoo Li is famous for its Panda-themed digital billboard animations, which are both charming and visually striking. This upscale shopping district comes alive at night, offering a modern, lively atmosphere with high-end shops, dining, and eye-catching digital displays.
5. Marvel at the Giant Bamboo Fountain in SKP Chengdu Mall
Known as the "Tower of Life," this artistic bamboo fountain in SKP Chengdu Mall is a breathtaking display of Chinese architectural artistry. It combines traditional bamboo design with modern aesthetics, creating a unique landmark that’s as much a work of art as it is a fountain.
These activities provide a variety of ways to enjoy Chengdu’s lively nightlife, offering both cultural and modern experiences without the need for a traditional nightlife scene.

A cute ice cream shop named Carrie.Li Gelato offers a variety of ice creams. The shop is adorably decorated and, although not very large, it makes for great photos. It's a nice place to chill. If you're visiting Chengdu, don't forget to stop by and try the ice cream here. There are also plenty of cafes nearby. I recommend spending the whole day in this area as you won't get bored. Take subway line 8 and get off at Fangkao Street station.
HANDBELL Cafe in Chengdu.
A cafe for those with good taste. If you are traveling to Chengdu, you should not miss this cafe. Although there are not many reviews from Thai people, Chinese sisters have reviewed it a lot because this cafe is frequented by good-looking people. There are many desserts to choose from, and the photos come out very chic.
