2025 Genoa Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in March)

It was a trip to Genoa, Italy. We started our day at Piazza De Ferrari, the bustling heart of Genoa. The majestic fountain in the center is the perfect spot for photos, surrounded by beautiful palaces. From here, we wandered down Via Garibaldi, a UNESCO World Heritage street lined with Renaissance palaces. We also explored Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Bianco both are filled with incredible art collections 🖼️ 📍Via Garibaldi, 11 💰 €9 for combined ticket to both palaces. If you are looking for a good restaurant for lunch, you can checkout Trattoria Rosmarino, just around the corner from the Piazza. Their pesto alla genovese on trofie pasta was unforgettable – a must-try local specialty 🙌🙌🙌 💰 Around €15-20 per person. 📍Salita del Fondaco, 30 We also explored the Porto Antico area, a rejuvenated old port now bustling with attractions. We visited the Aquarium of Genoa), one of the largest in Europe, where we marveled at the vibrant marine life. 💰 €28 per adult 📍Ponte Spinola We took a leisurely morning stroll to Boccadasse, a charming fishing village just outside the city center. We loved the colorful houses and peaceful beach 🏝️ perfect for some quiet moments by the sea 🌊 📍Via Aurora, 7. We thenstopped at Gelateria Profumo for the best gelato we’ve had in Italy. I highly recommend the pistachio and stracciatella flavors. 💰€3-5 for a cone 📍Via Garibaldi, 11 We headed to Spianata Castelletto, a panoramic viewpoint overlooking Genoa’s rooftops and the sea. The views were breathtaking 🥰 Later, we explored Genoa’s old town, getting lost in the maze-like streets and discovering hidden gems like San Lorenzo Cathedral. 📍Belvedere Luigi Montaldo 💰 Free for the viewpoint and €5 for the Cathedral's museum and towers. For our last dinner, we went to Eataly Genoa, a market-style restaurant where we tasted various local delicacies. It is also an important industrial center, forming the industrial triangle of Italy with Milan and Turin. Long before the founding of ancient Rome, Ligurians had lived here. It was once an administrative region of the Roman Empire. After the fall of the Roman Empire, it fell under Byzantine rule and was later occupied by the Lombards and Franks. From the 12th to the 16th century, it gradually prospered thanks to the Crusades and established an independent and powerful maritime republic. Although there are subways and buses, it is still more interesting to travel and adventure on foot, walking up the mountains, down the water and along the coast. From the Sunday flea market in Piazza Ferrari to the Red Palace, from the church to the fountain, I followed the example of the great adventurer Christopher Columbus, whose hometown was Genoa.

The Cattedrale di San Lorenzo is a Roman Catholic church in Genoa, Italy, the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Genoa. The striped buildings are the easiest to recognize and are visited by many tourists. Excavations in the area beneath and in front of the church have revealed Roman-era walls and pavements, as well as pre-Christian sarcophagi. So it is speculated that it was built in the 5th or 6th century. The carvings on the pillars and beams are very delicate, and the stone lions at the door resemble those of HSBC Bank. After several reconstructions and revisions, the facade was completed between 1307 and 1312, and the interior colonnade has been rebuilt to this day. The Romanesque building was kept in its original state, with the addition of murals with religious themes. Construction of the cathedral was completed in the 17th century. Basilica Ell’ Annunziata Genova is located in Genoa, Italy. It is a 17th-century Baroque-style church. The entrance is shaped like a Roman column-style temple and its history can be traced back to 1867. The outside is run-down and dilapidated but the inside is quite attractive, and the murals on the ceiling are stunning. The church was built in 1520 and then remodeled to its current appearance between 1591 and 1625. The interior is in Baroque style, with gorgeous Venetian stucco, golden walls and ceiling paintings, and inlaid marble decorations. The Christopher Columbus House in Genoa, Italy, is an 18th-century reconstruction of the house in which Christopher Columbus grew up. According to historian Marcello Staglieno, the original house was most likely destroyed in the French Bombardment of Genoa in 1684. It was rebuilt in the early 18th century on the basis of the original ruins. The rebuilt structure had a height of five stories. However, the upper stories were built by placing their beams on the neighboring buildings. When the neighboring buildings were demolished around 1900, as part of the construction of Via XX Settembre, the upper stories of this building were removed, and it was reduced to its current height of two stories. Currently the building operates as a museum

Next, we visited the famous St. George's Cathedral. This Gothic cathedral, built in the 12th century, has a solemn and majestic exterior and a lavishly decorated interior. We carefully passed through the cathedral's grand entrance and ascended to the towering dome, marveling at the exquisite artworks inside. The vibrant ceiling paintings, intricately carved reliefs on the walls, and the grand altar were all awe-inspiring. Here, we felt as if we had traveled through time, experiencing the rich historical ambiance. After leaving the cathedral, we headed to one of Genoa's most famous landmarks - the St. George's Palace. We lingered here for a long time, completely captivated by the charm of history. At lunchtime, we visited a small restaurant in the old town. It offered various authentic Genoese dishes, such as traditional Italian Bolognese pasta and rich, flavorful seafood pasta. We savored each dish, immersed in the satisfaction brought by the delicious food. The restaurant, located in a small alley, had an artistic decor, and through the windows, we could enjoy the cityscape of Genoa. Dining leisurely here, we felt like we were in a small social salon, experiencing the unique laid-back lifestyle of the Genoese. After a hearty meal, we explored the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the historic center of Genoa. We carefully examined these buildings and, with the guide's explanations, learned about their historical stories. After leaving the old town, we visited the Acquario di Genova, located in the city's harbor. Once a fortress, it has now become a scenic spot in Genoa. We climbed the towering walls, overlooking the blue harbor scenery. Various ships were docked in the distance, and the majestic lighthouse stood tall on the horizon, creating a vibrant atmosphere. We strolled along the walls, enjoying the fresh and cool sea breeze, feeling like we were in a lively marine world. The vibrant harbor scenery made us even more excited for the upcoming exploration. We visited the expansive aquarium, which houses various rare marine creatures from around the world. This museum houses Italy's and Europe's most representative hydraulic machinery heritage. We toured step by step, learning about the important role of water wheels in human society's development. From early simple water wheels to complex industrial-grade water wheels, each exhibit showcased the brilliance of human wisdom. With the guide's explanations, we gained a deeper understanding of the importance of hydraulic technology in building modern civilization. The entire museum was like a towering industrial heritage, inspiring admiration and respect. In the evening, we visited Genoa's most famous seaside avenue - the Golden Coast. This is a renowned Italian resort, attracting tourists from all over the world. We walked along the avenue that encircles the coastline, admiring the charming sea view at sunset. Along the way, we saw various seaside villas, shops, and bars, exuding a strong Mediterranean flavor. Tourists strolled around, enjoying local delicacies and fine wines. We dined at a seaside restaurant, enjoying the beautiful sunset view and the leisurely and romantic seaside life. On our last day in Genoa, we visited the famous St. Lawrence Cathedral. Built in the 16th century, this cathedral is one of Genoa's most important Baroque buildings. As soon as we entered the cathedral, we were immediately struck by its lavish interior decorations. The intricate reliefs on the walls, the magnificent altar, and the gilded dome all showcased the Genoese people's love and pursuit of art. We prayed devoutly inside the cathedral, feeling the strong religious atmosphere. Afterwards, we climbed the cathedral's bell tower. From the top, we had a panoramic view of Genoa. We saw the bustling dock area, the intricate old town, the serene and elegant seaside avenue, and the towering mountains in the distance, creating a series of breathtaking cityscapes. Enjoying this view, we marveled at this historic city, rich in both natural scenery and cultural heritage. This exploration of Genoa has been incredibly rewarding. The city not only has a long history and rich culture but also offers captivating natural scenery and warm, friendly people. The magnificent historical buildings, the artistic churches, and the charming blue harbor scenery all left me enchanted. What touched me even more was the strong humanistic atmosphere I felt here. The Genoese are passionate and hospitable, deeply proud of their history and culture, which they display in their daily lives. Whether dining in a restaurant or strolling through the old town, we felt this strong humanistic sentiment everywhere. The size and facilities of the room are similar to the previous one. A king size bed plus a Queen size sofa bed is a perfect match for traveling with a baby.
