~ Shuzenji in Autumn
The oldest onsen town on Shizuoka’s beautiful Izu Peninsula, it is listed as one of the “100 Best Hot Springs” in the country. Shuzenji also made GaijinPot’s list as of one the three most unforgettable ryokan and onsen experiences in Japan from travel expert Rob Goss. After soaking in the hot spring, don a yukata (a light cotton kimono), and stroll down the bamboo forest path along the Katsura River. The natural scenery is particularly stunning during autumn.

The Togetsu Bridge of Shuzenji Onsen is different from the Togetsu Bridge of Kyoto. Aside from the fact that they do not look anything more alike, they also have a lot of different things to offer. The Togetsu Bridge of Shuzenji Onsen has many locals roaming around with a 1900s carriage, offering tourists for a paid ride around the historical complex. That and many more fun in the area!

Izu demon cat pass! Xiushan Temple can also be understood as a small town in Japan, a famous sightseeing spot of Izu, which is a temple, a shrine, a bamboo forest, a hot spring, and a history and humanity. The Xiu Temple, the core area of Xiushan Temple, was founded in the early days of the Heian period by the master of the Hongfa (that is, in the demon cat biography). Before I came, I heard about the beauty of Hongye Hongqiao in Xiushan Temple. Therefore, it is really worthwhile to wear a kimono to walk through the ancient streets of Xiushan Temple. The attractions here are very concentrated, and most of the famous attractions and restaurants can be reached on foot. It is a stop that Shizuoka should not miss, also known as "Little Kyoto of Izu"

Izu Shuzenji
♨️
Shuzenji is the most famous mountain hot spring resort in Izu, and has been mentioned in the works of many great writers.
The Kano River flows slowly through the city, and there is a "Bamboo Path" with a Kyoto vibe, as well as ancient houses similar to those in Hida Takayama, and old-fashioned hot spring inns by the creek.
♨️
In the center of the river is an ancient hot spring called "Dokkoyu". Legend has it that when Kukai (Kobo Daishi) visited this place, he met a young man washing his sick father in the river. Kukai was moved by the young man's filial piety and said, "The river is so cold." He then smashed the stones in the river with his dokko cane, and a sacred hot spring gushed out.
Kobo Daishi said that this hot spring had healing effects, and it cured the father's chronic illness of more than ten years. This became a famous story, and Shuzenji became a hot spring resort.
Many tourist attractions have similar stories. Today, "Dokkoyu" is not legally defined as a "bathhouse", and it is not even allowed to be used as a foot bath. Shuzenji is a quiet hot spring town with a Zen temple. It is a two-star attraction in the Michelin Travel Guide, and is one of the filming locations for "The Dancing Girl of Izu" and the popular Japanese drama "We Married as a Job". If you have seen these two works, you will feel a connection to this place. There are very few tourists, and you will hardly see any Chinese tourists, mostly locals.
Shuzenji ▶️ (1 min) ▶️ Hie Shrine (10 min) ▶️ Shigetsuden ▶️ (5 min, passing Katsurabashi Bridge) ▶️ Bamboo Path (1 min) ▶️ Maple Bridge (8 min, passing Takishitabashi Bridge) ▶️ Kawara Foot Bath
📍Shuzenji, founded by Kobo Daishi, has Seven Lucky Gods amulets, which are very cute and worth collecting.
📍Hie Shrine, the most famous feature is the couple of cedar trees inside. Two thousand-year-old towering trees stand beside the shrine. If you make a wish here, the tree gods will surely hear it. There are very few people here, and there is a very special handmade amulet called "Ichiganjoju". It is a handmade amulet made of local straw, and each knot is different. It is said to grant one wish.
📍Bamboo Path, this is also the place where Aragaki Yui and the male lead went on a date in "We Married as a Job". From the bamboo forest, you will see a large platform made of bamboo. It is very comfortable to lie on it and look at the sky.
📍Lovers' Bridge, which is actually five red bridges across the Katsura River. It is said that walking across them will bring good luck.
⭕️Central Izu is famous for strawberries, which are everywhere, cheap and sweet.
⭕️There is no one here after dark, and there are few places to eat. There is an izakaya open until late at night, and the food is good.

Shuzenji, a hidden hot spring town in central Izu
On this trip to Kanto, Japan, one of the destinations I chose was Shuzenji, a hot spring town in central Izu Peninsula. It takes two hours to get to Shuzenji Station from Tokyo by the Izu Craigin Express. After getting off the train, transfer to a bus and get off at Shuzenji Onsen Station after a few minutes.
I highly recommend staying at the Tokairou Kikuya Hotel. The rooms are comfortable, the public areas are beautiful, and there are as many as six private and public baths of different sizes, allowing you to enjoy the hot springs to your heart's content. More importantly, the service here is very considerate. The lounge is open 24 hours a day, with unlimited drinks and ice cream in the afternoon, free oden at 6 pm, and free ramen at 10 pm. You can also add breakfast and dinner. The hotel floor plan and public area views; private bath room type; dinner and breakfast; open-air bath. I can only say that the photos don't do justice to the beauty of this hotel.
Shuzenji is also a popular place to see maple leaves in the Izu area. On the night we checked in, we went to the nearby Niji-no-Sato, where the red maple leaves were reflected in the lake under the lights, creating a beautiful scene. I took a few photos, but it looks even more beautiful to the naked eye.

Tokyo travel, a list of must-see attractions is out, so you can explore Tokyo without detours.
Don't miss Izu when you visit Tokyo, where you can enjoy all the must-see attractions at once!✨
As an INTJ, I love the artistic atmosphere of Izu. There are mountains and the sea, and you can see Mount Fuji from afar, waterfalls, hot springs, sea torii, sea trains... Every place is like a scene from a Hayao Miyazaki manga.🎨
🚞It takes about 2 hours from Tokyo, and the transportation is super convenient. There are few people here, and it is healing, no wonder the great writer Yasunari Kawabata regarded it as a "paradise"!
Don't miss the following Izu activities:
❶⛰️Omuroyama: From May to September, it is matcha green, the same as the movie "Your Name"! It is listed as "the best of the eight scenic spots in Ito" and is a popular internet celebrity check-in point, and the green mountains are so healing.
❷🌵Cactus Animal Park: You can get close to many animals, such as the top capybara in the hot spring yuzu bath, which is perfect for family trips.
❸🌊Kinosaki Coast: About 4,000 years ago, the Omuroyama volcano erupted, and the lava met the sea water and cooled to form here. Walking along the coastline, the Kamekyo Suspension Bridge is a popular internet celebrity check-in place.
❹🐟Shimoda Marine Aquarium: Built with natural seawater, it is a real marine aquarium. You can see dolphin and sea lion shows, and there are cute sea otters, penguins, seals, etc. in the museum, which is a must-see for families.
❺⛩️Shirahama Coast & Torii: The sea water of Shirahama Coast is emerald green and highly transparent, and many tourists come to enjoy the sea bath when it is warm, and there is also a popular rock torii.
❻⛵️Black Ship Cable Car/Black Ship Cruise: Near Shimoda Station. The cable car can go to the observation deck to see the sea, and the cruise can go to the sea.
❼🍁Shuzenji Temple: Known as "Little Kyoto in Izu", it is located in the center of the Izu Peninsula and was established in 807. It is a hot spring street temple with a profound Japanese cultural heritage and is also known as "the first garden in Tokai".
❽🌲Izu Panorama Park: The "Biten-dai" observation deck offers a distant view of Mount Fuji, which is the highlight of the park. Here, Suruga Bay, Mount Fuji, and three blue waters come into view, reflecting the surrounding natural landscape, as beautiful as a fairyland.
❾🏠Stay at Kai Anjin, a modern hot spring inn that combines ocean view rooms and marine navigation art. It is located in the place where the British navigator Miura Anjin met, and the sea view rooms are decorated with old ship art, and some rooms have old-fashioned record players, allowing you to feel the artistic atmosphere of the sea and cruise ships.

Shuzenji Dry Landscape Garden: Zen garden, suitable for quiet meditation space
#TokyoAttractions
Whether you are admiring the garden itself or experiencing the Zen spirit within it, Shuzenji's dry landscapes will surely shock your heart and allow visitors to understand the essence of Japanese Zen culture. This philosophical garden is undoubtedly the best reflection of Japanese traditional art.
The dry landscape garden of Shuzenji Temple combines Zen philosophy with the essence of natural landscape. The garden adopts typical dry landscape design techniques, using simple materials such as stones, sand, and gravel to create a Zen-like landscape. The stones and sand in the garden have been carefully laid out, as if they were a flowing picture, showing the roughness and indifference of nature.
At the same time, there are several green pine trees dotted in the garden, representing the perseverance of Zen spirit. The clear water reflects the surrounding scenery, creating a tranquil and settled atmosphere. Visitors walking here feel as if they are in a quiet meditation space, feeling the inner tranquility and peace.

Tokyo + Izu (Tokyo's surrounding coast) 6 days and 5 nights

Shinjuku is really great for shopping, spent the whole day here, you can find everything from anime IPs, trendy stores, budget malls, to luxury malls all in one place

【Drugstore】Lion's acne cream, Silkpeptide yeast, DHC lip balm are much cheaper than on 🍑bao. However, you need to do your research before going, otherwise, you won't know what to buy, there's too much variety.
🕐️DAY 3: Tokyo ➡️ Izu
Journey: Take a chartered car to Izu, about a 3-hour drive
Attractions: Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace - Shuzenji Note: Japan's attractions are quite small, definitely no need to reserve several hours. There are some art shops near Shuzenji, worth a quick visit
Meal: Eel rice
Hotel: Stay at 【Akazawa Onsen Hotel】 for 2 nights in Izu, delicious breakfast, can enjoy hot springs, great environment, recommended. Note: When booking the hotel, be sure to choose the option that includes breakfast and dinner, as there are no other restaurants nearby, and it would be inconvenient to go to the hot springs area to eat at a restaurant that accepts walk-in customers if dinner is not included.
🕐️DAY 4: South Izu

I spent the New Year's holiday abroad at Shuzenji, Japan
Shuzenji, Japan.
🌟🌟🌟 Shuzenji in Japan holds a high status, and in the evening, it is very quiet with few people around, allowing for a peaceful appreciation of the temple's beauty. The Fudo hot spring is said to have been named when the 8th-century monk Kobo Daishi struck a rock with a Buddhist priest's staff, causing hot spring water to gush forth. This is also the birthplace of the Shuzenji hot springs.
🌟🌟🌟 The Niji-no-Sato Park in Shuzenji recreates a 17th-century English town atmosphere with 'British Village' and a 'Craftsmen Village' showcasing traditional Japanese crafts, where one can spend hours savoring the experience.
🌟🌟🌟 Visiting Shuzenji allows one to feel an inner peace, with its scenic views everywhere, ubiquitous hot springs, timeless old inns, and more. No wonder there are so many tourists from all over the world who love Japan.

Izu, Japan, a beautiful place surrounded by mountains and seas, has been famous since ancient times for its unique natural scenery and rich cultural history. Among the many attractions in Izu, Shuzenji is undoubtedly a historical relic that cannot be ignored.
Shuzenji is located in the hinterland of the Izu Peninsula, surrounded by dense forests and clear streams. Its history can be traced back to 737, when it was established as a spiritual place for the Shingon sect of Buddhism. Throughout the course of history, although Shuzenji has experienced several fires and wars, it has been rebuilt each time, always maintaining its unique style and charm.
The architectural style of Shuzenji is full of ancient Japanese characteristics, and its exquisite carvings and beautiful garden designs all show the unique charm of Japanese culture. In the temple, those ancient Buddha statues and murals are even more a testament to history, giving people a deeper understanding of Japanese religion and culture.
The tranquility of Shuzenji and the seaside scenery of Izu complement each other, making it an ideal tourist destination. People can experience the culture and history of ancient Japan here, and also enjoy the beautiful natural scenery of Izu. Shuzenji and Izu, the perfect combination of history and nature, provide people with an unforgettable travel experience.

Shuzenji Hot Spring Autumn Leaves
A red scenery created by nature.
Enjoying autumn leaves in the oldest hot spring town in Izu is definitely a unique experience🍁
'Shuzenji Hot Spring' is the most representative hot spring town in the Izu area of Shizuoka Prefecture. From mid-November to early December each year, it welcomes the autumn leaf viewing season.
Here in the hot spring town, there is a 'red wooden bridge across the Katsura River', and you can also see the 'green bamboo forest'. Moreover, because it is the place where many historical events have occurred, you can feel the unique retro atmosphere of Japan wherever you go. With the addition of autumn leaves, it adds a layer of romantic mood.
'Shuzenji Rainbow Country' will also hold a night lighting event during the autumn leaf season. The night autumn leaves illuminated by lights show a different beauty from the daytime.
In Shuzenji, enjoying the hot springs and leisurely admiring the autumn leaves is such a luxurious and leisurely time.
Transportation:
Take the limited express train 'Maiko' from Tokyo Station for about 2 hours and 10 minutes to Shuzenji Station, and then transfer to a bus for about 10 minutes from Shuzenji Station

Hakoyu is a historical onsen along the river valley. Inside consists on one bath in a large wooden tub. Very relaxing, though no outside area.
Cost is 350. You pay at the machine and hand the ticket to the attendant. This onsen has no shampoo so bring your own or its only 50 for a small travel sized packet. Towel rental is 100yen.
The shoe locker is pretty large and fit my day pack. Inside the lockers are a similar size. Fantastic way to enjoy the area.

The only place where you can find Crab Ramen is in Yasubei (安兵衛) in Shuzenji Onsen. You just have to walk for around 10 minutes to Miyuki Bridge, cross it and you'll find a traditional Japanese restaurant open for visitors and customers alike. The Crab Ramen is only priced at ¥600. They also serve service water and tea. They also have a huge space for group customers with a traditional Japanese setup of table and chair sets.

Manju-sho Honzangenraku Shuzenji Main Store is a local delicacy store in the heart of Shuzeji Onsen. It is a must-go delicacy store when you're in Shunzenji Onsen because it sells specially-packaged Manju at a very faur price. This store is also located right across Yokko no Yu and is a walk away from Shunzeji Onsen bus stop. They also have cafés inside and the staffs are very polite to customers.

The Shuzenji Temple was founded during the 9th century. It was said that this temple bore witness to countless tragedies, deceits, and legends of history in Shuzenji, specifically of the Minamoto family. It is such a privilege to personally see a temple as old and as historical as this. I just sat there for 30 minutes, enjoying the view, marveling at the old bell, the main temple building, and the old trees around. Shuzenji Onsen is definitely lucky to have this jewel around.

Shuzenji is a place for Heritage Walks. My favorite place in Shuzenji is Shuzenji Onsen. It is a hill complex located in the heart of Shuzenji, where people will feel like they have traveled back to the 1800s. You can enjoy a Bamboo Park, a century old temple, hot springs, and Ryokans there. Definitely worth a visit. I walked around there wearing a rented Kimono!

Walking along the trail slowly to the center of Shuzenji Hot Spring is Shuzenji. It was founded in 807 by Master Dafa. It has a history of more than 1200 years. The temple was originally called Guigushan Temple. It is a temple where the master of Gaochun Hongfa practiced when he was young. It was renamed Xiushan Temple, and now there are stone tablets engraved with the words "Master of Hongfa" on the stone ladder outside the temple.
The temple itself is relatively small in size and can be visited in ten minutes. The red leaf season should be beautiful here. The treasure house in the Xiushan Temple is lined with the horses of the family, the flag, and the Beizi Zhengzi. The Song version of the Song Dynasty is like a precious antique, the environment is very beautiful and suitable for taking pictures.
Shushan Temple is full of thoughts and cottages, and the lush green bamboo forest. Xiushan Temple is really a place where life is slow, people are few and clean, and they wish for themselves and their families.

There are many such bridges in Xiushan Temple. Many couples and couples will come here, also known as Love Bridge, hoping to get love. It is said that there are a total of five bridges in love, and a couple who walks completely can live for the rest of their lives. The five bridges are: Duyueqiao () Huyu Bridge () Guiqiao () Fengqiao (Bridge) (), don't miss the little lovers.
The bamboo forest trail on the other side of the bridge is also the only way for couples to come here. Listening to the sound of the bamboo forest, the forest trail is quiet, and the woman wearing a kimono is coming from the forest. It is very artistic and enjoys life. Beautiful.

Xiushan Temple can also be understood as a small town in Japan, a famous sightseeing spot of Izu, which is a temple, a shrine, a bamboo forest, a hot spring, and a history and humanity. The Xiu Temple, in the core area of Xiushan Temple, was founded in the early days of the Heian period by the master of the Hongfa (that is, in the demon cat biography), and it was prosperous in the Kamakura period. The attractions here are very concentrated and within walking distance to most of the famous attractions and restaurants, it is indeed a stop not to be missed in Shizuoka.
