Bern - a small city with rich history
#2023travelwish
Visit the Old Town of Bern, which is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site - Explore the old city by foot is the best way to enjoy the city.
Some free things to do -
1. The Zytglogge (Clock Tower) has one of the must-watch performances that strikes at four minutes before the hour. Be there slightly early if you want to get a good spot.
2. The old bear pit / new bear park is interesting as you can see the bears roaming around freely or taking a dip in the water.
3. The Cathedral of Bern is the tallest cathedral in Switzerland. Look out for some interesting details like the stained-glass windows, the invaluable set of bells, or the sandstone masterpiece that depicts the Last Judgement. In for a physical challenge? You can climb up to reach the viewing deck which given you the wonderful panorama from the Old City to the peaks of the Bernese Oberland (oh, you've got to pay for a ticket for this challenge)
I wish to revisit Switzerland during the autumn or winter season!

One-day trip to the capital Bern
June 30th marks the thirteenth day of my trip to Europe, having finished visiting the Jungfrau, I took a train to Bern, the capital of Switzerland. Today is Sunday, and many shops are closed for rest.
The name Bern comes from the German word for 'bear,' which is also the symbol of the city. There is a place by the river where several brown bears are kept. Bern is not only the political center but also a city full of historical charm and modern vitality. The Old Town of Bern is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, renowned for its well-preserved medieval architecture, including the iconic Zytglogge clock tower and fountains from the Renaissance period. The Aare River meanders through the city, with its rapid waters surrounding the Old Town of Bern on three sides, forming a peninsula that is an ideal place for leisurely walks and enjoying the scenery.
The medieval cobblestone streets are bright, with connected arcades lining both sides, and ancient houses with red tiles and white walls complement each other, each with its own story-telling street heart column fountains. Its arcades, like our rider corridors, are especially suitable for shopping in summer and rainy days. The 16th-century clock tower and the Gothic cathedral, which began construction in 1421, give the Old Town of Bern an antique and medieval mystique.

What can you do in Bern, the capital of Switzerland, on a day off?
I always thought Zurich was the capital of Switzerland, but after learning more, I realized that Bern is the capital of Switzerland. Maybe it's just more low-key!
The day I went happened to be a day off. Apart from a few restaurants that were open, all other shops were closed. I envy people who have a work-life balance~
When I was making the travel guide, I saw many people saying that you can go to the bear pit to see bears. After coming here, I found that it's not what I imagined, but the surrounding scenery is still very beautiful. I admire the Swiss people once again!

Bern, the capital of Switzerland, UNESCO World Heritage Site Old Town
#EuropeanTravel
When you think of Switzerland, the big cities that come to mind are Zurich or Geneva. In fact, the capital is Bern. Bern is also a place with deep historical and cultural significance, as the entire old town has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you exit the train station, Bern Station, you will immediately feel the different charm of the old town compared to other Swiss cities.
Take a walk around the old town and enjoy various cultural heritages, such as the Zytglogge, the city gate clock tower with over 800 years of history, and Bern Cathedral, the largest Gothic building in Switzerland☺️

Bern Strolling Guide
🌟Origin of the name Bern
In 1191, the Duke of Zähringen, who ruled central Switzerland, chose the highlands of Bern, which had no name at the time, as the location for his castle fortress, and decided on a whim to name the place after the first game he hunted in the forest. As a result, a bear was caught and Bern became known as the "City of Bears" (Bern is derived from the German word for "bear," Bären). Therefore, walking on the streets of Bern, you can see the coat of arms and flags with bear patterns everywhere.
❤Bern's feature: the old town with arcades
This ancient city, composed of colorful fountains, sandstone buildings, and cobblestone streets, is protected by a 6-kilometer-long arcade (locally known as "Lauben") and has become the longest covered shopping and walking arcade in Europe. Whether it's sunny or rainy, this authentic medieval city is a perfect place for leisurely strolls.
🌟Main attractions:
Strolling in Bern, there is really no need to deliberately search for any scenic spots. The city's three landmarks - the Clock Tower (Zeitglockenturm), the Cathedral (Münster Bern), and the Federal Palace (Bundeshaus) are so eye-catching that it's hard to imagine anyone could ignore them.
The exquisite clock tower is located next to the old city gate on the grocery street. If you come before the hour, you can watch the finely carved bears, roosters, and Father Time take turns to chime with the clock. The intricately designed clock face not only tells time, but also shows the season, month, date, week, and whether the moon is full or not, if you can read it.
Amidst the shops, banks, and restaurants that line the street, 49 Grocery Street is unremarkable. If it weren't for the patent office technician with disheveled hair who wrote the theory of relativity here, this ordinary house would probably go unnoticed. Back then, Einstein and his first wife Mileva rented the top three floors of this house, where they not only wrote the theory of special relativity, but also welcomed the birth of their first daughter. Now it has been converted into a memorial hall, with exhibits that try to replicate the scenes of Einstein's family life at the time.
🚉Transportation guide:
Although Bern is the capital of Switzerland, there is no large international airport within its borders. In order to protect the overall style of the local medieval city from excessive modernization, most local residents rejected the resolution to build an international airport. However, transportation throughout Switzerland is very convenient, and it is easy to reach Bern by train or car.
⏳Playtime:
Recommend spending a day to visit Bern.

Hidden Gem Bern
#SwissTravel
While traveling around Switzerland, I felt that people usually think of Bern as a city to pass through or a city to go to other places. Even though it is the capital.
If you take your time looking at Bern, it is a really beautiful place. People jogging along the river early in the morning, clean air, and cutely colored buildings.
Everything comes together to create a fairytale-like atmosphere.

I am grateful and fortunate to have traveled through many parts of Switzerland and Bern is among the best among the cities.
Bern, the Swiss capital, is often overlooked by tourists as one of many Swiss destinations; they make a huge mistake. The old town of Bern, a winding lane of houses, medieval roofs and majestic stone bridges, is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it’s also traveler’s paradise with friendly people and lots of things to see and do.
Bern offers abundance of great photo spots. You can admire the Bern rooftops both from Rosengarten and Barengraben.
Overall I think if you ever going to Switzerland make sure Bern is include in your list

The first two were taken in Switzerland 20 years ago. At that time, I was studying in Germany. I didnt have much travel expenses. I spent a lot of time traveling to neighboring countries.
The next four are in Alaska. I have become a professional traveler. I am walking on the roads of the world, walking through glaciers, snow mountains and deserts, and my love for the world is getting deeper and deeper.
I will always be on the road.

Bern Old Town, originally a wooden structure Several fires in the Middle Ages burned all the wooden buildings. Later, it was rebuilt and changed to a stone structure, which has remained intact. The bright streets paved with round stones, the arcades connected to each other on the streets, the old houses with red tiles and white walls, and many streets in the streets of the city of Bern, so Bern is also known as the "spring city". ". There are 11 fountains in the city of Bern, which stand in the middle of the street. It not only provides the people with a visual view of the history and culture of Switzerland and Bern, but also thirsty when shopping.
