Room is equipped with a King Sized bed, closet, TV, chair and desk, a bathroom with a turbo tub and toiletries from Borghese. ➕In addition, our stay also includes Breakfast, Afternoon Tea and Happy Hour daily. All a definite plus to our stay here😊 🏨The hotel is pretty old school-designed in a grand way with lamented wooden furnishings, spacious foyer and well decorated surroundings. The staff at the reception was also very professional, helpful and friendly. ✅We chose to stay here due to its proximity to nearby sights such as the Dong Men Lao Shopping Street, Food streets and shopping malls. The area of Nantou in Shenzhen is known for ancient settlement. As one of the 24 defense outposts set up for maritime defense during the Ming and Qing dynasties, Nantou Ancient Town has a decorated past that is very much present today. The artefacts excavated in Nantou suggests the existence of settlement as far back as the Three Kingdoms period, some 1800 years ago. The city that has continued to this day was built in the 27th year of the Hongwu reign (1394) in Ming dynasty. The Nantou Ancient City was part of the efforts by China’s imperial government to ramp up maritime defense in Shenzhen during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Nantou served as one of the 24 defense outposts along the mountain ridges of Lingnan (southern China), and the Dapeng Fortress was another one of the 24. Of these defense outposts, only Nantou and Dapeng have survived the passage of time. During the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty, Nantou was the seat of administration of the Xinan County. There is significance in this fact because Hong Kong itself was considered part of Xinan County during much of the imperial times. Therefore Hong Kong is featured in quite a number of historical exhibits in Nantou. During the early Qing dynasty, many Hakka people settled down in this part of Shenzhen. Due to its coastal location, Nantou’s people engaged in all sorts of maritime trade, including fishing, oyster harvesting and salt drying. When Canton became the only trading port with foreigners in China during the Qing dynasty, Nantou experienced a flourishing development of trade, owing to the rise of the Thirteen Factories in Guangzhou. The South Gate (Old Gate) of Nantou was built during the early Ming dynasty and it did undergo restoration during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Lying at its foundation are granite slabs. There are brick layers covering the granite base. A brick structure on the second story served as the watchtower. The Dapeng Fortress might be my favorite ancient town in Shenzhen. A leisurely walk of the whole Dapeng Fortress would take about 2 to 2.5 hours. The Dapeng Fortress was constructed during the Ming Dynasty in the 14th century. In 1394, the 27th year of the Hongwu Reign of Ming Dynasty, the authorities began constructing the Dapeng Fortress, which was intended to serve exclusively defense purposes against pirates, foreign enemies and resistance fighters. Together with the Nantou Ancient City in Nanshan, Shenzhen, the Dapeng Fortress was one of the 24 defense outposts along the mountain ridges of Lingnan (southern China). The Dapeng Fortress was especially important for coastal defense during the Qing Dynasty. In 1704, the 43rd year of the Kangxi Reign, the Qing Court turned the Dapeng Fortress into a naval base, which oversees the coastal defense of all of Shenzhen and Hong Kong. This role of the Dapeng Fortress would be very important during the Opium Wars of the 1800s. In 1839, General Lai Enxi, who was a native of Dapeng, sounded the canons that would signal the defense of Kowloon against British attacks. Thus the curtains were drawn for the Opium Wars. After Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain in 1940 and before ceding Kowloon to the British in 1860, the Qing Court has constructed the Walled City of Kowloon for the purpose of defending Kowloon. At the time, generals from the Dapeng Fortress oversaw the Walled City of Kowloon. The Interlaken OCT Hotel is a four-star hotel and this was our destination for this weekend getaway. Located up the mountain that hovers over the sandy stretches of Shenzhen’s coastline in Dameisha, the Interlaken OCT Hotel presents something of quite a different nature from that of the Dameisha Beach. As its name suggests, the hotel is part of a resort area that mimics the environ of Switzerland. The OCT East (East Overseas Chinese Town), covers an area of 9 square kilometers at Da Mei Sha of Shenzhen, is the national ecological tourism demonstration district and the international tourism destination, at an investment of 3.5 billion Yuan by the OCT Group. It is a combination of two theme parks, three scenic towns, four resort hotels, two 18-hole golf courses, Hua Xing Temple and Tianlu mansion etc. When I arrived at the hotel, I was truly impressed by the beautiful reception hall, with a ceiling a few floors high, and enormous decorative fixtures that did, in my view, create an impression that we were somewhere in a foreign land. It was worlds apart from the scene in Dameisha Beach, and I did appreciate that sense of relative serenity in the mountains. The day of visit was January 10, 2025. The foliage in Lianhuashan Park are full, its colors bright, and all around beautiful. There are other features in the park, including a statue of Deng Xiaoping, who was being memorialized in this park for his contribution to the economic development of Shenzhen, but I did not see it. Lianhuashan Park, meaning the “Lotus Mountain,” acquired its name due to its location. Nestled within the seven hugging mountains shaped like a blooming lotus, the park features an exceedingly large land area with the substance and form of a well-manicured natural environ. I took the subway and arrived at the northwestern gate of Lianhuashan Park. As soon as I entered the park, I felt this sense of openness and wholesomeness right away. The park features well-maintained, broad and paved pathways, with many beautiful park installations. The trees were tall and grand, and you could see right away that this environment was a result of careful urban ecological planning. Trees of one kind lined whole sections of the park. Then you would see other species in the next section. The Hehu Xinju is in so many ways representative of Hakka culture in both Shenzhen and in China. In this tour of the enormous Hakka residential complex, I learned about the significance of the Luo family, who established its prominence in Shenzhen since the Qianlong era of the Qing dynasty. The walled village is a feature for Hakka architecture. It serves, first and foremost, defensive purposes. It also prescribes an approximate square or rectangular layout for the village’s residential life. Meaning “crane lake villa,” Hehu Xinju is of the Luo clan of Hakka people. The walled village consists of two wall enclosures. There lie three main courts in the main axis separated by courtyards, and two rows of houses on the side. The ancestral hall lies at the very center of the whole village. Hehu Xinju spans a large area of 25,000 square meters. There are more than 300 chambers in the village. Construction for Hehu Xinju began during the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty (1736-1795), and it was completed during the 22nd year of the Jiaqing reign (1817), apparently the joint effort of three generations for five decades. The ancient city gate greets visitors with a typical pagoda top with a tiled roof and an arched entrance beneath. The Gangkeng Ancient Hakka Townlet as it stands now have a history of about three hundred years. The villagers of Gankeng were farmers, and besides agriculture, they also relied on their handicraft of the “cool hat” for a living. As the economy of southern China changed over the decades since the 1950s, the villagers have also begun to work in factories, but Gankeng remained a poor community. The basic facilities of water provision and plumbing were only available here in the 1990s. With Overseas Chinese Town Holdings Company taking over the revitalization of the area in the 2016 (more below), Gankeng finally saw better days. A leisurely walk in Gankeng will take at least 2-3 hours, especially during the summer. There are many old structures that are exceedingly picturesque. Feel free to get a little lost in the many alleyways, in which you will see many smaller old structures there that are perfect for picture-taking. The landscaping is also well done, especially in the pond area. The Gankeng Museum was delightful and that was quite surprising to me. The exhibits were well-arranged and the narratives were educated and sympathetic to the Hakka story. The gun tower at Gankeng is a typical structure in many of the ancient villages of Shenzhen. It is built of concrete, with four floors and served the primary purpose of defense against bandits. The villagers also used it for educational purposes. The Gun Tower of Gankeng is attached to the “pai” houses, meaning a row of houses. I flew to Shenzhen and visited the China Folk Culture Village. There, I saw miniature versions of various historical sites, which were incredibly detailed, and I was also captivated by the impressive live performances showcasing traditional Chinese culture. After that, I took a bus to Zhuhai and crossed the border into Macau. The city had a unique blend of Portuguese and Chinese influences, and I was particularly fascinated by the luxurious interior designs of the hotels and casinos. Finally, I took a ferry to Hong Kong, where I enjoyed stunning views of the city’s diverse skyline—from towering skyscrapers to historic buildings—each telling a different story of the city’s vibrant past and modern evolution. #shenzhen #macau #hongkong #travel

Accommodation in Hong Kong is not cheap, but if you don’t need a lot of time to explore the city, one cheap hack is do a day trip from neighbouring Shenzhen, where hotels are much cheaper. A single room with no window cost me about 160 CNY per night (174 HKD or 31 SGD). Not the cheapest by Chinese standards, but a steal compared to Hong Kong. To get from Shenzhen to Hong Kong, take a high-speed train from Shenzhen’s Futian station to Hong Kong’s Kowloon West station. The train ride is only 15 minutes. I used Alipay to purchase my tickets, and it cost 68 CNY per ride (74 HKD or 13 SGD). I arrived in Hong Kong around 9+ AM in the morning and left Hong Kong around 9+ PM at night. (You can leave later as well since cabs in Shenzhen are not expensive, although the public transport closes early) Upon arriving at Kowloon West station, simply find your way to Austin MTR. The signs are very clear. The MTR was hassle free, and you can just tap your debit/credit card to get in and out. I stayed in Muji Hotel Shenzhen which was amazing experience and would recommend it to any interior design lover or Muji fan. Things are meticulous there, gym and library were always empty. They have a beautiful Muji shop. Among all the pluses, there was only one minus, typical smell of old or not clean ventilation in the room. The hotel feels relaxing and there's Muji music playing everywhere. There are 2 parks you can go to. One is Bijiashan and other is Lotus Flower Park or Lianhuashan in Chinese. You can walk up to the peak and down along the lake down to Civic Center and Children's Palace where are art shops, bookshops, coffee shops and restaurants. I also bought there paintings and beautiful souvenirs. #shenzhen ##futiandistrict ##mujihotelshenzhen ##lianhuashanpark If you like running like me, you can run in the park and have a lot of fun. The park offers so much open space that's it's insane. You can smell and see beautiful exotic plants, people dancing or doing thai chi, or playing music. You can go there with someone or also have alone time like I did. It has very special ambience that you can only witness in very green and large parks in Shenzhen. This is definitely my personal favorite. After a long walk, shopping and dinner, you go back to Muji hotel where you fully reset in a well protected and sleek environment. As there's a shopping mall Upper Hills, I also popped into Italian restaurant that's is just half a minute walk away from Muji Hotel. They offer fine dining experience for a good money. Go there, staff is super friendly and funny. The boss was also interested in talking to me and interacting. The restaurant's name is Oggi. They have one more branch in Shekou and one more in Guangzhou. Remember, you come to Muji hotel to decompress and slow down, same goe for the park. Meaning “The Fairy Lake” in Chinese, the Xianhu Botanical Park spans an enormous area of 546 acres. On the east of the park stands Shenzhen’s tallest Wutong Mountain. On its west lies the Shenzhen Reservoir. This fact alone shows the park’s significance as a site of both natural conservation and research. The park is so big that there are buses running on site to take visitors around. At the Shaluo Pond, there is a loop to go around the waters to see the different views. Having lived in Shenzhen for almost five years now I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to come to the fairy lake park. It’s a stunning place a few metro stops away from downtown, and it has so many different areas you’ll forget you’re in a China and possibly even forget you’re on Earth. There are various trails and gardens based around the big fairy lake, which itself has various rivers and water features. There’s a huge temple and pagoda along with a museum and gift shop, the temple is active and was very full when we went so remember to be respectful and keep the noise level down. They allow you to take gifts and tributes but be aware of all the incense burning as it can be overwhelming. The highlight for me was the cactus gardens and African plants area, I spent ages taking it all in and looking at all the different cacti. If you want to check it out get the metro to Xianhu road station and follow the signs. Our short visit/transit in Shenzhen was ruined by all-day rain, but it didn’t stop us from getting around. Luckily we found a bit of surprise as we wandered through the city and ended up inside this futuristic cafe-library, which is also very friendly to those who don’t intend to use either the library or the cafe. Although this is a bit hard to find (and we did go to the other, less glamarous Yushin bookstore in the other side of the city), we were not disappointed by what it offered. If you plan to visit this highly Instagrammable library, make sure you visit the correct one according to your wish. Otherwise you would end up standing on subway for a whooping 45 minutes.

海上古堡 in Shanwei - we went on a little roadtrip from Shenzhen. If the traffic is smooth then you can get there in two hours. China have so many cool places. I just enjoy so much experiencing and seeing things that I had never imagined existed. 🥗 They have made this super cool cafe just by the ruins of the sea Castile. Was pleasantly surprised visiting this ‘ancient city’ in Shenzhen which is an absolute beautiful mix of traditional architecture with a modern twist You’ll find an array of cafes, bars vintage stores and hand made goods, such as cool little spot if you like quirky things and art decor not to mention you’ll also find a few exhibitions hidden amongst the maze of alleyways! #newyearnewtrip means checking out a new hotel in Shenzhen. Pullman Shenzhen North is located next to the Shenzhen North Railway station. Awesome location with amazing rooms. The hotel is located from 46th to 58th floor, so it is really living in the sky. The service is attentive but never overbearing. The good service award should go to housekeeper Crystal who left an apologetic note to us for not using the make up cases she provided. That was good service!
