THE SPLIT OF VIETNAM (1956 – 1975) It is recommended that you join a DMZ tour to visit this area of Vietnam. The DMZ of Vietnam at the 17th parallel is now a historic vestige. As Vietnam is now properly ruled by the Communist Party, there is no longer any tension there. Yet as a historic site is bears significant relevance to the modern history of Vietnam. After the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, the Viet Minh (then the united front of the Communist Party of Vietnam) proclaimed victory against the French. The world powers met to discuss arrangements for both the Korean Peninsula and Indochina. It was at this time that France officially ended its influence in its former colonies in Indochina. In the Geneva Conference of 1954, the powers decided that Vietnam would be split into North and South Vietnam. The Viet Minh would govern the North, while the former and last emperor of Vietnam, Bao Dai, would govern the South. The Geneva Accords signed at this conference also provided for a democratic election to take place in 1956 to determine which government would eventually govern a united Vietnam. Therefore the split of Vietnam was meant to be only temporary. Other critical developments of the Geneva Conference of 1954 included the creation of Laos and Cambodia as independent states. This would turn out to bear critically upon developments in the Vietnam War. The parties signed ceasefire accords as they relate to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam at this conference as well. As for Korea, the armistice was also signed. For three hundred days after the Geneva Conference, there was a ceasefire. All sides were supposed to withdraw troops. Within the 300-day window, which the United Nations protected, people within all of Vietnam was free to move across the nation. And there was indeed lots of movement. One million North Vietnamese moved south. This has enabled North Vietnam to send spies down to the South. Some of the North Vietnamese that stayed in the South would end up fighting guerilla wars there. Meanwhile, 12-15,000 South Vietnamese followed the Communists and moved north. There would be no more moving after this 300-day window. However, the vote never came, due to South Vietnam’s eventual refusal to hold the election. As a result of the failure in holding the election, Vietnam remained divided. Beginning in 1956 and for the subsequent two decades, there was a North Vietnam and a South Vietnam. With this development, the DMZ became the actual political and ideological border between the Communist North and the Capitalist South. THE EASTER OFFENSIVE OF MARCH 1972 Quang Tri lies 57km northwest of Hue and 40km from the DMZ. After the 1954 Geneva Accords, Vietnam was divided into North Vietnam and South Vietnam. This division resulted in Quang Tri being in South Vietnam. Further northwest, Dong Ha became the northernmost town of South Vietnam, closest to the 17th parallel, which is the border between North and South Vietnam. In March 1972, the North Vietnamese army, known as PAVN (People’s Army of Vietnam), launched the Easter Offensive against the South. In this offensive the PAVN attacked and captured both Dong Ha and Quang Tri. The PAVN captured Dong Ha in late April, 1972. Quang Tri came under PAVN control by May 2, 1972. Highway 1, officially National Route 1A, runs through the major cities of Vietnam from the Huu Nghi Quan Border Gate near the China-Vietnam border. It extends all the way to the very southern tip of Ca Mau Province. The French colonists constructed this highway in the early 20th century. During the Easter Offensive of 1972, the PAVN launched serious shelling at Quang Tri in order to gain control of the city. The section of Highway 1 between Quang Tri and Hue became the only escape route for the 20,000 residents of Quang Tri. Almost the entire population attempted to flee the city. Between the few days in late April and early May, both the civilians and the ARVN military jammed this section of Highway 1, both on-foot and in vehicles, and bumper-to-bumper. The majority of the vehicles were ARVN fleets, consisting of “flatbeds, takers, small trucks, jeeps and ambulances.” When this convoy had gone 6 miles south, the PAVN attacked. Because the ARVN 3rd Division failed to organize flank security, the attack caused serious casualties to both civilians and the ARVN military. The Catholic Long Hung Church was built in 1955. Standing in ruins, it is the living testament to the horrifying few days of killing on Highway 1. I went to Bao Vinh because I wanted to see a fishing village in Hue. Once upon a time, Bao Vinh was a bustling port besides having a vibrant fishing community. Its rise as a trading port originated from the Chinese merchants’ commerce in this area during the 17th century. They traded much sought-after goods: rice, salt, seafood, and fish sauce. The workmen of Bao Vinh made coffins, inlaid pearl crafts, bricks, tiles and woven handcrafts. There were 39 century-old houses from this era of prosperity, but only about 15 remain and they are in ruins. When Hue no longer served as the capital of Vietnam, Bao Vinh’s booming commerce slowly declined. Today, there are still traditional craftsmen here, as some of the old craftsmanship has been revived, such as the making of conical hats, incense, carpentry and blacksmiths. When I got there, I decided that it would serve all my purposes if I just walked through the main street. The main street that runs through this riverside community is named Bao Vinh. It was very busy. Vendors, pedestrians, bicyclists, vehicles – every bit of cacophony bespoke a vibrant community. I did not look very hard for the century-old buildings in Bao Vinh. I would rather just relax and enjoy the vibe. The colors all along its main thoroughfare came with lots of natural and man-made flavours. They were of the native fruits grown locally, of the handicrafts on sale, of the machine-made household goods. I visited the Imperial City in Hue, and it was pretty interesting. The place is huge, with old palaces, temples, and walls that used to be part of the royal grounds. Some parts are a bit worn down, but I think that just adds to the charm. Walking around, you get a real sense of the history there. The area was numerous bonsai trees was surely my favorite. And the color palette of the place is just so stunning and beautiful. A tip: Wear comfy shoes because there’s a lot of walking, and the ground can be uneven. Also, bring some sunscreen or a hat—it can get hot. One more tip: there is a coffee shop on the premises, and some vending machine machines to get water and another beverages. I didn’t know that Hue was the capital of Vietnam for over 140 years. It was nice to learn about the place while walking through it. Overall, I’m glad I went. Hồ Thuỷ Tiên is an abandoned theme water park. Road goes through a few old rusted water sliders and other attractions. The place is surprisingly very well-maintained. There are very few tourists, though they were more than I expected to see in an abandoned place. There aren't much shade, so I'm glad that I came there in early morning when it wasn't that hot still. My friends and I spent about an hour strolling around and taking pictures of the old creepy roller coasters and sliders. Overall, it's an interesting place to see. On one hand it is such as shame that it got abandoned. There are a few places in Hue city where you can make your own burning incense sticks! Visiting Thuy Xuan Incense-making Village on our way to the imperial city was a good idea and a super cute experience. There are a few shops where locals sell all sort of goods, including locally made incense burning sticks. Vietnamese ladies rolled incense right there in their shops, and it was very interesting to watch how this little things are made. We bought a pack of incense made by the owner of the store, and she asked if we would like to try to roll our row incense sticks. It turned out to be harder than we thought it would be! Thanks to the help of the Vietnamese lady - each of us ended up with a nice homemade burning incense stick. It was really fun! #internationaltravel #hue #vietnam

You have to try their waffles!! The best I've had in Vietnam. Hidden in between houses accessible by a small ally , a two floor restaurant with a a very delicious variety of modern and visually appealing dishes. Everything else we had tasted was great but the waffle has made a lasting memory. I wish i’d more more days in Hue. Avocado toast was great (i added bacon, which comes on an another plate), espresso was so good. Absolutely loved the food, the atmosphere, and the location. Located in a nice corner of the town, the chocohouse has a beautiful view. There is also something humble about it. It has a very pleasant owner and serving staff. Also, some amazing drinks and deserts, great service and well priced. The seating is super comfy and it's a great spot to work from. I really appreciated the hospitality and recommendations from the staff. It hit the spot for us. There is free water and the banana pancake can cure any problem. The Khai Dinh emperor who was the penultimate Emperor, is the most impressive and ornate one, yet with some kitschy details. It's elevated from the street level, reaching it through a Chinese style gate via 2 stairways. On the way up to the Mausoleum you pass ornate stone guards on both sides, as well few smaller temples. Khai Dinh tomb entrance fee is 150,000 VND/adult and 30,000 VND/child. Tourists can visit the tomb anytime between 7 AM and 5 PM. #traveldiaries This is Ho Thuy Tien Waterpark in Hue. It was temporarily opened in 2004, and before the official opening, the entire playground was closed due to lack of support. Even the locals don't know why. After that, it became popular among locals and tourists as an abandoned playground. Originally a fun purpose, but now it's unusual, It happened to be disturbing. We ate here three days in a row. This was timed so well because I had been eating Vietnamese for over two weeks and now I just wanted something different. Especially for breakfast, I was ready to get back to smoothie bowls and avocado toast, however touristy that may be. Absolutely loved the food, the atmosphere, and the location. Even had pad thai here, surprisingly good. The cafe was within walking distance of where we were staying, which made it even easier to pick. The food was consistent and fresh. Our adventure began at dawn in Da Nang, as the first light of morning spilled over the horizon. We had decided to take an electric bike to Hue, a journey that promised both the thrill of the open road and the allure of Vietnam's rich history. As we set off, the cool morning breeze was invigorating, carrying with it the promise of the day ahead. The E-bike hummed quietly beneath us, a smooth and eco-friendly ride that allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the surrounding landscape. We rode along the coastal road, the shimmering sea on one side and lush green hills on the other. The freedom of the open road and the anticipation of what lay ahead made the journey exhilarating. By late morning, we arrived in Hue, the former imperial capital of Vietnam. The city greeted us with its timeless charm, a blend of ancient architecture and modern vibrancy. We made our way to the Imperial City, a vast complex of palaces, temples, walls, and gates that spoke of a bygone era. Entering the Citadel was like stepping back in time. The grandeur of the Ngọ Môn Gate, the intricate designs of the Thái Hòa Palace, and the serene beauty of the Forbidden Purple City left us in awe.
