🇳🇿 Grasslands in New Zealand's South Island
During our road trip across New Zealand's South Island, we noticed numerous grasslands along the way. The grasslands in New Zealand's South Island can be categorized into several distinct types, each defined by the local climate, altitude, and land use.
🌟 Tussock Grasslands are dominated by native tussock grasses, which are hardy, tufted grasses well-adapted to the region’s dry and cool conditions.
🌟 Alpine Grasslands are found at high altitudes, usually above 1,200 meters.
🌟 Lowland Grasslands are located in lower altitude areas and primarily used for agriculture, including dairy farming and sheep grazing.
🌟 Semi-Arid Grasslands occur in areas with low rainfall and are characterized by sparse vegetation, including drought-resistant tussocks and shrubs.

New Zealand's North Island features several grassland areas, which are part of its diverse ecosystems. These grasslands range from lowland to alpine regions and include both natural and managed environments.
🌟 Lowland grasslands are often found in river valleys and coastal areas.
🌟 Alpine grasslands are located in higher altitude areas like the Central Plateau, including the regions around Tongariro National Park.

Lakes, grasslands and yaks
Pudacuo National Park is mainly comprised of Shudu Lake, Bita Lake and Militang Pasture. Militang Pasture (弥里塘草场) and Bita Lake (碧塔海) in Pudacuo National Park are closed for tourists due to maintanance from 3th September, 2017. The administrative office of Pudacuo National Park hasn't confirmed when they will be open exactly.
Shudu Lake Scenic Area (属都湖) is still open for tourists. The shuttle bus will take you to the scenic area where you can take a stroll down the lake and enjoy the breathtaking view of the mountains, grasslands and of course, yaks.
There's also a short hiking route you can take but it's usually closed as well.

Between Shi Wei and Erguna
We returned to Erguna from Shi Wei village via a different route. This time, we followed the road alongside the Erguna river, constantly looking out onto Russian plains.
The scenery is glorious here and the weather was perfect to be able to see as far as the hills allows it.
Stopping in Qika for lunch at a traditional ethnic Russian home where we picked our own vegetables for the table, we savored the traditional and simple architecture of the buildings. The food was delicious and the tea inviting, the conversation unparalleled.
The grasslands are a place for complete zen. Even the cows, in their summer pastures, were relaxed with visitors approaching.

When China meets Russia Part 2: Shi Wei
Shi Wei village has been voted one of the top ten villages in China and you can see why. 😍 Shi Wei lies next to the Erguna river which separates China and Russia.
It is quaint and charming and the locals are extremely hospitable.
During the day you can walk through the village or rent a bike to move around faster. There is a small port at the end of the board walk where you can get a boat to go up and down the river. 🚢
You can also visit the raspberry and blueberry farm and check out the reindeers there. 🫐
Visit in the evening to find the village hopping with bbqs and tours it’s taking in the sights.

China Russian fusion Part 1: Erguna
The grasslands between Hailar and Erguna and beautiful and as far as the eye can see. 🚗 135kms
Arriving in Erguna you find many stores selling Russian products and Russian, Chinese and Mongolian writing on store fronts.🪆🇨🇳🇲🇳
Russian architecture is clearly the order of the day in Erguna.
We went to see the Erguna Wetlands, the largest wetlands in Asia, which was a nice walk. There is a boardwalk you can use to check out different parts of the Wetlands and you can also pay for a speedy golf buggy to take you to the top.

🎟🚗 15 rmb
⏱ 1.5 hours is plenty of time to visit.

Inner Mongolia is definitely a worthwhile trip. I went during the Labor Day Holiday with a tour group called Joy Tours, so it was easy to get around.
We went to Xilamuren Glasslands and even though the grass was not as green (due to the season), it was still very beautiful and refreshing see so yurts sitting on an endless landscape, blue skies and animals grazing the fields. We were greeted by the Mongolians with a white bowl of white wine (Báijiǔ) which we had to take a sip, and treated to lunch. We watched an equestrian show performed by Mongolians, then later rode a horse (very slowly) on the grasslands. There was a show and bon fire in the evening at our yurt accommodation. One of my favorite moments was being greeted by the millions of stars, and ended up stargazing for the rest of the night. We also visited the Kubuqi Desert which was lovely but very windy, and didn't get a lot of time to experience it. My partner and I then missioned alone to Ordos, and visited the "Ghost City", as well as Genghis Khan Mausoleum. The "Ghost City", to me, did not feel like a ghost city but rather a city that has potential to thrive in the future. The Genghis Khan Mausoleum was absolutely beautiful and his name is clearly still being honored by many. It was very interesting to see how two cultures still co-existed in this area: Chinese and Mongolians, although majority of the population were Chinese. Both languages were used and displayed on every sign. Mongolian culture is very interesting: different, yet has similarities to other cultures. I would have loved to experience more of it, and the best way to experience it, I think, is in the grasslands, or Mongolia itself.

Wild Wild North - Inner Mongolia
Definitely a trip for the more adventurous traveler.
Inner Mongolia was an experience and a half. camping in the desert, riding horses, seeing ancient inner Mongolian rituals, and eating ALOT of Lamb.
Two cities to definitely check out would be Baotou and Hohhot. Baotou has a grassland park right in the center of the city and a lot of good hotpot restaurants. Hohhot is a little bigger with a large Muslim population. you can find great halal food in the area and see some Islamic inspired architecture. a lot of dried meats
🐎 Inner Mongolia is known for its horses and if you go visit the many grassland areas you might be able to catch a horse show or even ride one yourself
🍲 The food is amazing. abundant in lamb and milk products, it might be alittle hard to find vegetarian options, but they do exists.
🐫 The grasslands are amazing. you get to sleep in a yurt and see the night sky and all the stars without any glare from city light.
👘 Classical Mongolian Dancing is also a must see. Very well choreographed dance moves combined with balancing objects on their heads, the dancers make it look easy. but it probably took a long time to master. 🙂
Getting There - Plane and rented keep to the grasslands
Attractions - Horse show, Grasslands, Traditional Mongolian Dancing
Hotels - Grassland Yurt
Food & Restaurants - Lamb Hotpot, Milk Tea, Lamb BBQ

It should be one of the best hotels in Yangshuo~ Location and transportation: a quiet lot in the hustle and bustle, newly built soon~
Room view: Straight to the point, you can drink coffee leisurely on the super-large balcony and watch the rolling mountains and rivers, which is very magnificent~
Swimming pool: The room is arranged by the pool, which is very convenient to enter and exit. The infinity pool design is fully integrated with the natural beauty.
. If there is a chance, I will go again.
