2024 The Big Island (Hawaii island) Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in December)
You might know that it as Waimea, but the post office didn't. When the post office demanded all towns in a state had their own name, Waimea, Maui kept its designation and Waimea on the Big Island went with the Hawaiian version of Samuel, chose for one of the town's favorite sons. Kamuela is a very different sort of Hawaiian vacation experience. Think cowpoke and ranch hands vs. beaches and mai tais. The interior town has several stunningly beautiful hotels and nine golf course, and where else on Hawaii could you tour a working cattle ranch?

The correct way to open Hawaii!
Hawaii is a very suitable place for tourism, with different charms in each season. This time I brushed the Big Island and brushed Oahu for the second time. Although I was still not satisfied, I had a lot of fun! The following is my specific itinerary for your reference.
This is a leisurely trip, mainly arranged activities such as taking the OW diving certificate and shopping. See the last two pictures for specific itinerary details.
OW Diving Certificate: I had a failed diving experience before, so I carefully chose a diving company this time. Under the patient guidance of the Japanese coach, I successfully got the OW certificate. Although I am still a bit afraid of water, I have begun to slowly enjoy the fun of diving.
Second Brush Gulani Ranch: I strongly recommend everyone to choose Zipline! If you choose Zipline, you can not choose UTV. Because the routes and attractions of the two projects are similar, but UTV will cover the whole body with dust. If you want to choose, you can put it at the end. The last UTV time is 3:15 in the afternoon, you need to check in in advance, everyone should arrange the time reasonably.
Dinosaur Bay ticket grabbing: Friends who want to go to Dinosaur Bay remember to grab tickets at 7 o'clock in Hawaii time in advance, and set up autofill, because it is really difficult to grab tickets by manually entering information.
Island tour: In one day, we circled the island along the coastline and checked in many beautiful jelly beaches!
Shopping: Luxury goods have stores on the main street and Ana Moana, it is recommended to go early and communicate with sa, so that you can know in advance whether the style you want will be in stock, which is convenient for the first time to grab.
The above is my trip to Hawaii, I hope it will be helpful to everyone!

Mauna Kea Tour Trip - Cold & Beautiful!
Prepare to wear layers after layers if you're not used to winter/the cold like I was! I totally should've worn more warming clothes! by the end of the 7 hours trip I was freezing!!!! especially the part where we got to see the stars and have an amazing experience watching the sun set - I couldn't enjoy it as much as our guides were sharing information with the laser cause I was too cold to get out of the car. might have even gotten some tiny frostbite! I highly recommend to wear very warm jackets, socks and even leg warmers. the shoes didn't need to be hiking ones as most people are only able to drive up with a jeep or join a tour. i recommend joining a tour since the corners can be dangerous/hard to turn if you're not living on the mountains already haha!
it was truly a magickal experience and not to be missed.
the one I went with was called the mauna kea tour experience by Hawaii Island Holidays on Viator! this is their contact number: +18083130368

Cliff diving teenagers!
We are at Southpoint on the Big Island of Hawaii. There are tons of activities in the area including a short drive to the Green Sand Beach, Black Sands Beach and lava fields. These kids wanted to time their jump off of this 60 foot cliff. with perfect precision they accomplished their goal landing safely in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Southpoint is the southern most point of any State. You can catch both the sunrise and the sunset during the winter months.

Sunshine likes Waikoloa Beach.. so will you!
Welcome to the sunny side of the Big Island. Particularly the incredible and forever memorable Waikoloa beach.
Waikoloa Beach is located just north of Kailua Kona on the west side of Big Island. Waikoloa beaches are calm and an ideal location for snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming or just sunbathing. During certain times of the year you will inevitably encounter a sea turtle or two. The water here is crystal clear and shines turquoise and deep blue in the almost perpetually daily sunshine.
There are places to swim in with the dolphins or snorkel with the Mantas (this is done at night as lights attract huge Manta Rays). you will never have a dull moment in Waikoloa Beach because there are so many activities for you to do at all times of the day and night.

This Hawaiian restaurant is located in the Keauhou Shopping Center on the Big Island of Hawaii. 🌺
The owner and chef, Sam Choy, is famous as one of Hawaii's leading chefs ❤︎
It's built on a hilltop, so the view is great and the scenery is beautiful, so I recommend it!

Helicopters over volcanos
#grouptravel
Helicopter tours are everywhere on the Big Island Hawaii. But it really can be a special experience to do this with your group or family. Our helicopter held 6 guests so not the largest available but a comfortable size for our group. Flying over the volcanoes and coastline and sharing in the excitement with my special people was something I will never forget.
Getting There - Our helicopter left from Hilo airport. Next to the commuter terminal. If you stay on the Kona side of the island it’s about a 1.5 hr drive over the saddle road (one of big islands best maintained roads)
Attractions - volcanoes, lava devastation, waterfalls, desert and rainforests are all items you will see in the hour long flight. After the helicopter ride you can also make your way to Volcano National Park for an up close look at the sites.
Cost - $$$$ the helicopter ride was about $250AUD each and worth every cent. Or entry to Volcanoes National Park is $30 for 7 days.
Food & Restaurants - Volcano House
Shopping - numerous gift shops throughout the visitor centre and volcano house.

Visiting the Southern Most Tip of USA
Our first full day on the Big Island and we rod tripped to the Southern most section or more commonly know as Punalu’u. Our first stop was the bakery for Malasadas followed by the black sand beach. unfortunately no turtles while we were there but a unique and interesting visit.
Getting There - many options available from both Kona and Hilo we chose to self drive and followed HI-11 (the ring road). The drive took about an hour and a half from Kona as we took it slow and admired the scenery along the way.
Attractions - Black Sand Beach
Food & Restaurants - Punalu’u Bakery (so delicious!!)
Well worth the drive for the Malasadas alone. #gooutside #familytravel #foodie

Big fun on Big Island
Big Island is actually called Hawaii island, it gets its name from being the biggest island in the state of Hawaii.
I arrived via a short plane ride from Honolulu to Kona. You can also fly into Hilo on the other side of the island. Kona is a lovely small town and it is quite compact to spend a morning roaming around. Its location on the sea makes it all the more picturesque. The bulk of accomodation options are also around this area.
Similar to neighboring Oahu, there's plenty to do! But unlike Oahu, it's much less busy and feels more laid-back and slow, something which 'island time' really reinforces.
You'll want to rent a car and a car with enough horsepower, as the winding roads can be tough for a smaller car, especially when going up steep hills.
On the island, you'll find both active and inactive volcanoes. A great place to discover more would he Volcanoes National Park, where you can see fumes coming out of a crater. You'll see the massive impact the lava has had on the Hawaiian landscape, where roads and towns were completely swallowed by it.
The island also hosts many black sand beaches, which is a result from the constant volcanic activity in the vicinity. One of the most famous is Punalu'u Beach. There you can also spot sea turtles!
Of course you'll also find numerous other beaches doting the coast. Some of them do incur a cost for parking but otherwise are free to enter. You'll also find many hiking trails which you'll be rewarded with beautiful waterfalls. Hiilawe Falls comes to mind. It's a very steep hike so do come prepared!
Finally you can't leave Kona without trying some famous Kona coffee! Try some and take some home with you.
Overall, Hawaii is a wonderful island to visit where you'll be rewarded with stunning and amazing landscapes. You'll also find a host of activities that is bound to keep you occupied for the entirety of your stay!

What a breathe taking sunset on the beautiful Westside of the island of Hawaii. #hawaii #staycation
In the moment
You can admire the sea of clouds and sunset in Mauna Kea by nightfall. It would be freezing in the mountain, but cotton-padded overcoats are available. You can have a lunch and some ice-cold beers in brewery. UCC coffee garden is on the slope of volcano. You can enjoy sunshine and wonderful coastline here. If you like bake, do remember reservation in advance!
TravelingSisters.
In Hawaii, you can watch the sunset like a fire sink into the red-orange sea, feel the fresh air filled with flowers, and sit at the beach and drink a cup of fragrant Kona coffee. I am afraid there is no place in the world that can provide you with such enjoyment.
TIPS: Kona Coffee ranks third in the world, behind Indonesian cat coffee and Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. Ueshima is the most famous coffee garden on the Big Island of Hawaii. Here, you can personally participate in the baking of coffee. Belong to your own exclusive coffee.

JOJO’s wonderful trip.
The Big Island is the youngest island in the geological age of several islands in Hawaii, and the volcanic eruption is still increasing its area. Our Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay is a hotel built on volcanic rock. The coastline here is not a white sandy beach, but a black volcanic rock. When you look closely, the black rocks are covered with the texture of the lava flowing after the volcanic eruption. The black volcanic rocks and the blue sea are beautiful and unique. My room faces the sea, pouring a glass of white wine in the Executive Lounge in the evening, facing the setting sun and feeling the sacred nature of nature. Keauhou Bay, where the hotel is located, is home to the devil fish. Watching the devil fish at night is a very special experience.

Summiting Mauna Kea: A Heavenly Adventure at Hawaii’s Highest Peak
#alohaspirit
Mauna Kea, Hawaii’s tallest mountain, offers an adventure that’s as out-of-this-world as the views from its summit. Standing at 13,796 feet (4,205 meters), Mauna Kea isn’t just a mountain—it’s a towering giant that rises above the clouds, offering breathtaking vistas of the Big Island and, on clear days, a rare glimpse of the Pacific Ocean in the distance.
The journey to the summit is an unforgettable experience, taking visitors through diverse landscapes—from lush rainforests at the base to barren, otherworldly terrain at the top. Mauna Kea is also home to one of the world’s most advanced observatories, making it a stargazer’s paradise. On a clear night, the view of the stars is unrivaled, thanks to the mountain’s high altitude and low light pollution.
While hiking to the summit is a challenge that requires proper preparation and acclimatization, many opt for a guided tour to ensure a safe and informative trip. Along the way, you’ll encounter stunning panoramic views and possibly even catch a glimpse of native wildlife like the Hawaiian monk seal. Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or a casual traveler, summiting Mauna Kea is an experience that’s truly one for the books.
