In summary

This is just the latest collaboration between CatchLight and CalMatters, united in purpose to tell the story of California.

A new monthly newsletter, California in Pictures, will highlight photojournalism from across the state, giving a glimpse into the daily lives and extraordinary moments that define California.

CalMatters is bringing you this newsletter through our partnership with CatchLight, which focuses on visual storytelling. We hope this new newsletter can serve as monthly postcards from around the state.

“Through my work at CatchLight I have the opportunity and privilege of seeing California through the lenses of incredibly talented and dedicated photojournalists,” says CatchLight Executive Editor Jenny Stratton. “This new visual collaboration is an opportunity to illuminate more people, places and stories from across the golden state, one frame at a time.”

CatchLight and CalMatters became partners in 2022 by supporting the work of Larry Valenzuela and enhancing CalMatters’ critical journalism through visual reporting collaborations. Previous collaborations have documented unhoused Californians, shown the personal struggles with wage theft and allowed students an opportunity to tell their own stories about learning and living during the pandemic.

“Our partnership allows an even greater opportunity to tell the story of California,” says CalMatters Editor-in-Chief Kristen Go. “A visual newsletter is an extraordinary opportunity to show people this state’s great diversity while also capturing the challenges and triumphs we encounter.”

The free newsletter starts May 1. Please subscribe today.
