Last week, we had the pleasure to participate to the 9th Fish Gametes Workshop organized at the Universidad de León. Our expert on the topic at AKYmed, David Nusbaumer, had the opportunity to talk about how our services and products are used in fish conservation and in aquaculture, with his talk entitled "Advancing aquaculture and conservation: practical applications of sperm preservation technologies in fish reproduction". This workshop, in the beautiful city of León, was an absolute success! A big round of applause to the scientific committee! In short: we need to diversify the (european) aquaculture (90% of the production is based on only 6 species), we need to farm more and new species, and for this, we need genetic tools for these new species. That’s also part of the of the European vision for NewTechAqua. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eQXsQPD3 For heavily farmed species like Atlantic salmon, or in industries that have been raising animals for centuries (eg. livestock), genetic tools are abundant, reliable, performant and sometimes even very affordable. However, for niche species, or new species for which these tools are not developed yet, implementing a genetic study or a genomic-based mating plan can hurt itself against the cost-barrier of the development of, for instance, a SNP-array. This is why, at AKYmed, we opted for an alternative approach for NOAH GENETICS. We want to offer our customers meaningful and informative genetic information, therefore high genetic resolution (generally several thousands SNP) at an affordable cost. To do so, we use a reduced representation sequencing technology that requires no a priori information. We can work with any species, with or without reference genome.
