#Personalization and learning-to-rank algorithms are often trained on implicit reward signals, such as clicks on news articles or plays of videos and music tracks. However, this approach becomes challenging when ranking items from different content types (e.g., music, podcasts, merchandise) in a single slate, as the same reward signal can indicate vastly different levels of user engagement depending on the content type. In our new #RecSys '24 paper, Ranking Across Different Content Types: The Robust Beauty of Multinomial Blending (arXiv link: https://lnkd.in/dmcGA4hq ) we introduce a straightforward method to address the cross-content-type ranking problem. The Multinomial Blending (MB) method is remarkably simple, but it effectively ensures average exposure guarantees across various content types. Unlike many existing diversity-inducing algorithms, MB is decoupled from the underlying scoring function, allowing it to be used alongside any existing score-based learning-to-rank method. Moreover, MB is easy to maintain as its exposure guarantees for each content type remain stable even in the face of non-stationary user behavior or when the underlying scoring function is retrained or updated. In practice, we found that MB’s high interpretability greatly facilitates alignment discussions for multi-objective problems. Joint work with Giuseppe Di Benedetto and Matteo Ruffini.
