Update vom PERSEUS-Team 🚀 Erste Tests auf dem Flugfeld in Dübendorf waren erfolgreich 💪 Im Juni 2024 gründete der OST-Maschinentechnik-Absolvent und Masterstudent Thomas Ebnöther gemeinsam mit zwei ETH-Studierenden das ARIS-Projekt PERSEUS. Ziel des Projekts ist die Entwicklung und Erprobung eines Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE, Umlaufdetonationstriebwerk) - eines innovativen Raketentriebwerks. Im Gegensatz zu herkömmlichen Triebwerken, die auf einer Deflagration mit konstantem Druck und Unterschallgeschwindigkeit basieren, nutzen RDREs eine Detonation, welche zu einer Drucksteigerung führt. Diese Technologie ermöglicht eine höhere Effizienz, mehr Leistung und einen kompakteren Aufbau und ist daher Gegenstand intensiver internationaler Forschung. PERSEUS hat bis Weihnachten weitere Tests geplant, um die Funktionsfähigkeit weiter zu validieren. Sollte es gelingen, eine Detonationswelle im Betrieb nachzuweisen, wäre PERSEUS das weltweit erste Studierendenteam mit einer selbst entwickelten RDRE – und das erste, das diese Technologie in der Schweiz zündet. 🤯 📽 Das Kurzvideo zeigt, wie Teile für das Triebwerk in der Prototypen-Werkstatt der OST – Ostschweizer Fachhochschule gefertigt werden. Aktuell liegt der Fokus auf der Herstellung der Düse. Auch hierbei handelt es sich um eine Neuentwicklung: eine invertierte Glockendüse (Aerospike), die für maximalen Schub optimiert ist. We did it! 💥 After just six months, our team at Project PERSEUS achieved the incredible goal of firing their rotating detonation rocket engine. This sets a landmark not only for ARIS and all our supporters but also for Switzerland's space sector in general. 🚀 Being the first student built RDRE in the WORLD and the first one at all in Switzerland, we are incredibly proud of our team and their success. We’re proud to introduce HERMES, our latest project from ARIS representing a leap forward in Swiss student rocketry. Named after the Greek god known for speed and intellect, HERMES aims to become the first Swiss student-designed rocket powered by a bi-liquid propulsion system to reach a 3km altitude at EuRoC 2025. 🚀 This project unites over 55 dedicated students from ETH Zürich, ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences, University of Zurich and OST – Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences blending expertise from diverse engineering and scientific disciplines. HERMES embodies a comprehensive approach to rocket development, integrating cutting-edge technology across all its subsystems, from avionics and software to structures and propulsion. These efforts culminate in a design that prioritizes innovation, sustainability, and high performance. ⚙️💻🔧 Central to our propulsion capabilities is the collaboration with the HEPHAESTUS Focus Project, whose state-of-the-art EthaLOx engine forms the heart of HERMES. This partnership exemplifies the power of teamwork within ARIS, demonstrating what can be achieved when knowledge and passion come together. Alongside this, HERMES is built with safety, reusability, and technological advancement at its core. Our guided recovery system, designed for precise, controlled landings, showcases our commitment to sustainable rocketry, while building on previous knowledge gained through the recently launched NICOLLIER launch vehicule and other predecessor projects such as BERNOUILLI & PERIPHAS. Supporting this holistic approach to development is our Engine Test Bench (ETB), which will enable thorough testing of latter iterations of HEPHAESTUS’ engines and our fully assembled system, and the innovative Remote Filling Station (RFS), designed for the safe and efficient handling of propellants before launch. These components and many more work together seamlessly to ensure that every phase of HERMES, from testing to launch, upholds the highest standards of engineering and safety. 🪂🔥⛽ Today, we are thrilled to unveil the new HERMES logo, a symbol of our dedication, ingenuity, and collaborative spirit. 🌊 Meet SWARM - Aris 🌊  We’re a team of 9 highly motivated engineering students from ETH Zürich, working on a groundbreaking project: designing and building a swarm of autonomous underwater robots to explore the challenges of freshwater environments. Collaborating with ETH’s ICS - Intelligent Control Systems and our mission partner Eawag, we’re not just advancing research—we’re creating deployable, high-impact technology for Swiss lakes and distant space worlds in the future. Our robots tackle the unique challenges of underwater localization and communication without relying on GPS or traditional acoustic methods. Instead, we're developing robust, low-frequency hardware and software tools that can withstand the high attenuation and low visibility of the dynamic underwater world. Our goal? To empower the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science with cutting-edge instruments for tracking the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Using specialized sensors, our robots map wastewater plumes from which these bacteria originate up to a depth of 20 meters. By applying extremum-seeking algorithms, they can track plume movements in real time, following currents and stratification to provide precise data on their environmental impact and help finding the best sampling spots.  We’ve already tested our underwater radio frequency antennas, proving their feasibility and mission alignment. Our test prototype is nearly ready to incorporate the first subsystems, allowing us to iterate and refine as we prepare for in-water trials. Despite the engineering challenges, we’re incredibly excited about what lies ahead, knowing that we’re having the chance to pioneer solutions never before achieved in underwater robotics that can be used in a variety of applications.
