Day 5 of the BMI Think Tank Study Trip: Entrepreneurial Insights and the Future of Platforms On our final day, we kicked off with an inspiring session led by Sebastian Frankenberger, who shared his journey as an entrepreneur. His insights sparked meaningful reflections on decision-making in entrepreneurship, allowing us to explore how different choices could shape business outcomes. To deepen our understanding of the Boston ecosystem, we had the privilege of meeting Anthony Tjan from Cue Ball Capital, one of Boston’s foremost thinkers in venture capital and business-building. Tony shared his unique approach to entrepreneurship, emphasizing the importance of a long-term vision and a customer-centric mindset that prioritizes genuine human needs. Our last stop took us to a session with Prof. Marshall Van Alstyne, renowned author of Platform Revolution and a leading expert in platform economics. Prof. Van Alstyne discussed strategies for managing and growing platform-based businesses, as well as his forward-thinking approach to tackling misinformation on digital platforms. As our trip concludes, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all our members (Reiner Fageth, Sebastian Frankenberger, Nicolas Buche, Ute Zimmermann, Thomas Mehls, Jean Reynald Mace) who joined us this year edition and to our co-founder, Prof. Dr. Karolin Frankenberger Frankenberger, for guiding us throughout this journey. #Entrepreneurship #PlatformEconomy #BMIThinkTank #Boston #Innovation #Strategy #CustomerCentricity #PlatformRevolution #DigitalTransformation

Day 3 & 4 of the BMI Think Tank Study Trip: Strategy in the Age of Generative AI After two dynamic days in Montreal, we arrived in Boston – a city renowned for its innovation and tech transfer. Our highlight was an executive session with Prof. Andy Wu from the Harvard Business School (Strategy Unit), where we explored strategies for adapting to the emerging field of Generative AI. Prof. Wu challenged us to envision what Gen AI could achieve in five years, emphasizing the need to embrace "imperfect" results within the context of an imperfect world. This session left us with valuable insights into leveraging AI for strategic advantage. We also had the opportunity to tour the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship with Macauley Kenney, who shared the unique approaches that make MIT’s startup success rates among the highest. The center’s model of fostering innovation and entrepreneurship is nothing short of inspiring. Finally, we immersed ourselves in Boston’s vibrant startup ecosystem at the Venture Café Cambridge, networking with innovation leaders like Chuck Goldstone and meeting the brilliant minds behind several emerging startups. Hearing their pitches gave us a fresh perspective on the future of tech and innovation. Boston has shown itself to be a lively, forward-thinking city, truly committed to fostering the next big breakthroughs. #GenerativeAI #BMIThinkTank #Innovation #Strategy #Boston #Entrepreneurship #HarvardBusinessSchool #MIT #VentureCafe #FutureTech #StartupEcosystem

Day 2 of the BMI Think Tank Study Trip: Quantum Computing – The Next Big Leap After exploring AI in Montreal, Day 2 took us to Sherbrooke Innopole’s Quantum Innovation Zone, where we focused on the transformative potential of quantum computing. There’s no better place to dive into this field, and we were thrilled to learn from some of its leading pioneers. We were welcomed by Christian Sarra-Bournet from the Institut quantique - Université de Sherbrooke, who gave us an ideal introduction to quantum computing and emerging quantum technologies, covering both current research and future possibilities. Next, we met with Mehdi Bozzo-Rey from Distriq, Zone d'innovation quantique de Sherbrooke, who walked us through practical applications and use cases for quantum technology, discussing how these innovations will shape our businesses in Europe. DistriQ’s EQ1 lab, the first open quantum lab accessible to all startups, was a standout – setting a new standard for tech accessibility and collaboration. During our visit, we also engaged with key players in the ecosystem, including Julien Camirand Lemyre from Nord Quantique, Amirreza Ataei from Chemia Discovery Inc., Varun Chaturvedi from Multiverse Computing, and Jacques Mc Neill from Numana. Each shared insights into their groundbreaking work in quantum technologies and the promising future of this field. Day 1 of the BMI Think Tank Study Trip 2024: Exploring Impact Through Deep Tech This year, our Think Tank study trip is focused on the transformative power of deep tech, starting in the vibrant city of Montreal and later this week continuing on to Boston. Our goal for 2024 is to immerse ourselves in both ecosystems, contrasting their unique approaches to innovation and exploring strategies to enhance technology adoption from research into impactful, real-world applications. Our journey began at Mila - Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, where Robson Beaudry introduced us to Mila's pioneering research in artificial intelligence and their focus on fostering AI adoption across industries. Mila is a key player in accelerating AI’s impact on business and society. Next, we joined Guillaume Chicoisne and Jean-François Bruneau from IVADO, an organization dedicated to connecting research, industry, and startups with top talent in AI. Their insights provided us with a deeper understanding of how Montreal’s ecosystem leverages collaborative networks to drive innovation across sectors. In the afternoon, we spent valuable time at Centech Mtl, a leading incubator for deep-tech startups, where we engaged with Julian Lucchesi, M.Eng. and Richard Chénier from Québec Tech. They shared insights on Montreal’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and the support structures in place for startups and entrepreneurs. Finally, we were welcomed by representatives from the City of Montreal: Nicolas Marino MSc, Maha Berechid, Xavier Paillon, MBA, Valérie Poulin, and Jean-Christophe Sinclair. They gave us an overview of Montreal’s economic development initiatives and unique factors that make Quebec a standout in North America’s innovation landscape. We are truly grateful for these insightful and inspiring encounters. A special thanks to the startups at Centech who generously shared their ideas with us – your innovation and dedication are inspiring! #Innovation #DeepTech #Montreal #Entrepreneurship #BMIThinkTank #TechAdoption #ArtificialIntelligence #Ecosystem #EconomicDevelopment #ResearchToMarket #TechStartups

Let’s keep on innovating🇨🇭. For Switzerland cost leadership is no alternative, since the Swiss franc keeps on getting stronger. In times, when the competitive advantage is shrinking, we have to strive harder for being truly innovative. Not just in products and processes but also in our business models, structures, customer centric practices, collaborative ecosystems, political processes, and our culture. This is not just relevant for Swiss companies but for whole Europe. What do we need to become more innovation-centric companies? #innovation #competitiveness BMI Lab The Economist
