An instrument for monitoring water in hotels, an innovative shower head, a farmer-focused weather update system, and an environmental monitoring kit—these are just some of the impactful solutions developed by 34 students from 14 nationalities across #Esade, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), and IED Barcelona during this year’s Challenge-Based Innovation (CBI) program. In collaboration with IdeaSquare - the innovation space at CERN, this year’s CBI tackled challenges aligned with SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Participants worked on two real-world cases: enhancing Barcelona’s water service value with Aigües de Barcelona and addressing water salinization and access to fresh water in Gambia with insights from Instituto de Diagnóstico Ambiental y Estudios del Agua (IDAEA-CSIC). The program culminated with the first-ever Final Gala on Esade’s Sant Cugat campus, where multidisciplinary teams showcased their innovative prototypes, leveraging CERN technologies to propose sustainable solutions. ATTRACT EU Phase 2 has been featured in a CORDIS Publications Office of the European Union article highlighting its impact in training the entrepreneurs Europe needs. The EU-funded ATTRACT2 project is fostering a new generation of researchers who embrace working together with academics, research institutions and businesses to create new technologies that benefit society. The aim is to provide Europe with the young innovators and entrepreneurs it so desperately needs to thrive in global tech markets. Santiago Cartamil-Bueno is the coordinator of the #MEGAMORPH project, which aims to develop evaluation kits that will integrate graphene Micro Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) to showcase them and get radical commercialization of this technology that will bring the price reduction of CVD (chemically vapour deposited) graphene 🔍. Both working on the LHCb calorimeter, Matteo Salomoni and Kacper Jama used IdeaSquare extensively to develop new calorimeter modules that will be installed during the long shutdown 3. Learning through challenges has always been at the heart of ldeaSquare's educational programmes. A great challenge that we give the students is when we ask them to build a machine that could sort balls by colour! The "make-a-than" is a one-afternoon exercise we included in our new educational programme: ldeaSquare Planet. This programme is designed to be adaptable to all curricula and to teach transversal skills, whether technical skills to students from non-technical backgrounds, as well as notions allowing those who are not familiar with them to position their projects in the social context in all its complexity. These immersive exercises allow students to understand the issues and point of view of each expertise, and allow them to develop skills to collaborate effectively with a view to sustainable solutions.

The SOILSKIN project is part of the #FTSF program and aims to create renewable garments 👚👕 integrated with biotechnological components. Inspired by post-earth roamers forced to endure aridity, the wool-cotton blend textile used for the body of the dress is temperature-adaptable, sustainable to cultivate and acts as a carbon sink.
