At the end of the year, the DBIS research group would like to thank all group members, project partners, students and the many helping hands in the administration for their great cooperation. We wish everyone Happy Holidays and a great start into a hopefully happy, healthy and peaceful 2025. And we hope that everyone finds as many presents as we did ;-) University of Basel Departement Mathematik und Informatik | Universität Basel Databases and Information Systems Group, University of Basel

Info
The main focus of the DBIS group is the development of novel database concepts and their application to large-scale distributed information systems, in particular to Data Management in the Cloud, Multimedia Information Retrieval, and Service-oriented Architectures & Process-based Systems (Workflows). From a technical perspective, this includes aspects of distribution, reliability, scalability, mobility, heterogeneity, dynamic adaptability, and semantics. The results of this work are applied to various fields like Crowdsourcing applications, e-Health or e-Science.

Congratulations to Günes Aydin for successfully completing his Master thesis titled "Semantic Scene Understanding for Mixed Reality Multimedia Retrieval"! In his thesis, he developed a system that recognizes objects in the current view of MR glasses, segments them as meaningfully as possible, and uses their positions to display multimedia retrieval results directly in Mixed Reality. #MixedReality #MultiMediaRetrieval Departement Mathematik und Informatik | Universität Basel Universität Basel

The three projects XReco, #SunXR and #ViRMA organized and presented a tutorial on "Multimedia Information Retrieval in XR" at the #ACM_MM24 conference - featuring an in-depth introduction on the topic and three hands-on demos where the participants could experiment with different approaches on how multimedia retrieval can be brought to #XR. An exciting Google Summer of Code Mentor Summit has ended, with many interesting encounters and discussions. Polypheny would like to thank Stephanie and her entire GSoC team for the great work and the continued support over the last 20 years. Since she was present twice, we now also understand how she could do the work of two. We thank this year's contributors Alyaa Mamoon, Eslam Ashraf, and Malik Rafsanjani for their amazing work. The Polypheny team has added ~5 kg of Swissness to the famous Google Summer of Code Mentor Summit Chocolate Table - and people seemed to like it. And in between the chocolate breaks, there were very many interesting discussions and encounters.
