Recent years have seen an alarming upsurge in dengue outbreaks all over the world, with over 11 million cases in Latin America in 2024 alone, a 200% increase over the previous year. 🦟 Our newest short film ‘Treating a feverish planet: The Dengue Alliance’ takes us to Brazil, one of the flashpoints of Latin America’s 2024 epidemic, as well as to Sri Lanka and Thailand, to show the devastating impact dengue outbreaks are having across the world. The film tells the story of a climate-induced crisis threatening our future - and for which treatments are sorely lacking – as well as the hope of scientists and researchers on the frontlines of dengue outbreaks that are joining forces to secure a healthier future. But most of all, it is a film about the vulnerable communities that are all too often the most affected by climate-sensitive neglected diseases. Watch now ➡️ https://bit.ly/denguefilm 🎥 Produced by Scholars Film and shot in Brazil, Sri Lanka, and Thailand by Greg Lomas, Jared Hinde, Fábio Nascimento, Adrian Callan, and Luke Duggleby. #DengueAwareness #NeglectedDiseases #GlobalHealth
Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative - DNDi
Forschungsdienstleistungen
International non-profit developing safe, effective, and affordable treatments for the most neglected patients.
Info
The Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) is an international, not-for-profit research and development organization. We discover, develop, and deliver treatments for neglected patients around the world. Our treatments are affordable and patient-friendly – and have already saved millions of lives. We are researching new treatments for people living with Chagas disease, sleeping sickness (human African trypanosomiasis), leishmaniasis, filarial infections, mycetoma, paediatric HIV, hepatitis C, and dengue. Together with our partners, we are working on over 40 projects, including more than 20 new chemical entities. We are also running over 20 clinical trials. When the medical humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999, they dedicated a portion of the award to addressing this fatal imbalance and exploring a new, alternative, not-for-profit model for developing drugs for neglected patients. As a result in 2003, MSF, the World Health Organization, and five international research institutions founded DNDi.

🌍 Climate-sensitive infectious diseases are on the rise around the world, affecting already vulnerable populations who lack access to adequate tools for testing and treatment. 🔬Together with FIND, Medicines for Malaria Venture, and Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), we are innovating to develop tools that are simple, safe, and effective, and that can be easily integrated at the primary healthcare level. Without action, the communities that will be the most affected by climate change will not have the treatments and diagnostics they need. #COP29 #ClimateChange #Innovation

🌍👶 This World Children’s Day, our Access Leader for the Viral Diseases, Janice Lee, shares some insights about medicines for children. Here’s what you need to know: 1️⃣ Children's bodies process medicines differently than adults, so they need treatments that are safe and effective for their age and weight. 2️⃣ They need child-friendly formulations like dispersible tablets, granules, or mini tablets, especially under age 6. 3️⃣ Children affected by neglected tropical diseases don’t often get treatments designed specifically for them. It is encouraging to see that the need for paediatric #NTD treatments is getting visibility in the press, with this timely story by Le Monde today (in French). It focuses on the new World Health Organization/GAP-f report and our R&D work on visceral leishmaniasis: 🔗https://lnkd.in/eca5BG4R (paywall) 🤝 Together with our partners, we are working to deliver safe, simple, and affordable treatments designed for children. And we ensure that these life-saving medicines reach those who need them most. #WorldChildrensDay #HealthForAll #AccessToMedicine #ChildHealth #BeatNTDs Music: Always. Musician: Rook1e.

🌍 Climate change is a growing challenge 🌍 Climate change is more than an environmental issue, it’s a health crisis. Many neglected and infectious diseases are climate-sensitive, putting millions of individuals at risk worldwide: ➡️ Malaria infects 250M people annually. Climate change could place an additional 51–62M people at risk by the 2030s. ➡️ Dengue is endemic in 100+ countries. Because of climate change, nearly 60% of the global population could be at risk by 2080. ➡️ Visceral Leishmaniasis currently endangers 600M+ people. Climate change will likely cause the number to increase significantly by 2080. Along with FIND, Medicines for Malaria Venture, and Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) we are innovating to ensure that affected communities have the tools they need to protect themselves from climate-sensitive diseases in the future. #COP29 #ClimateChange #GlobalHealth #NeglectedDiseases #Collaboration #ClimateAction

🌍 On Health Day of #COP29, check out the World Health Organization (WHO) COP29 Special Report on Climate Change and Health. 🙏 Our teams are proud to have contributed to this report and its vital call to action. The climate crisis is not just an environmental issue, it’s a public health crisis. 🦟 The document highlights how climate impacts – like rising temperatures and increased rainfall, displacement, food insecurity, and malnutrition – accelerate the spread of infectious diseases, such as dengue. Neglected diseases are diseases of poverty, and climate change threatens to undo decades of progress and push millions more people into extreme poverty. 🌱 To overcome this, we must also reduce our own carbon footprint. Did you know the healthcare sector is responsible for 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions? This includes emissions associated with drug development and production as well as the transport and disposal of medical goods and waste. 📄 As the report highlights, tackling the climate and health crisis requires high-value, low-carbon health systems that focus on preventing disease through investments in primary healthcare, effective screening, education, and evidence-based treatments. 🤝 At DNDi, we welcome world leaders’ establishment of a new coalition to tackle climate and health at COP29. Now we need to see concrete actions to make its aims a reality. 🔗 Read the COP29 Special Report, and join us in prioritizing health in climate action: https://lnkd.in/eM7tUzQx #ClimateHealth #SustainableHealthcare #GlobalHealth

Congratulations Dr Monique Wasunna, for not only delivering such a powerful and insightful speech, but also for sharing your inspiring journey. Thank you for your ongoing dedication to improve the lives of neglected populations and for being part of DNDi's mission for over 20 years!
Truly inspiring Keynote Address at #ASTMH2024 by our Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative - DNDi Africa Ambassador and my mentor Dr Monique Wasunna What is the point of making scientific discoveries if the people it will benefit do not have access to them? Decolonizing science is essential for the benefit of all. To create a future where science is truly decolonized we need to: 1. Reform how science is funded 2. Create strong and inclusive partnerships 3. Involve communities in setting priorities and driving the scientific agenda 4. Foster political will to put science to service of all 5. Encourage involvement of women and youth in science. #TropMed24 #IAmTropMed
