↘ 1967 Hire lots of women Story 5/60 60 stories for 60 years As EF expanded to Finland and Norway and its programs took off—the first year it sent 406 students to England, and now, just two years later, it was sending 3,607—Bertil needed a dozen new employees to handle the workload. He didn’t have a formula for hiring in those days and wasn’t even sure what he was looking for. He just hoped to surround himself with people who’d work hard, laugh together, and inspire one another with creativity and fresh ideas. He looked for people with an independent streak, who would take charge, solve their own problems, and not need too much supervision. He hired friends, friends of friends, and mostly people his own age or younger. And he hired lots of women. Years later, a study at Harvard Business School of EF hiring practices of the 1960s described how the company had used what one academic called “underutilized resources.” Where other companies were hiring men with university degrees, Bertil gave the opportunity to others equally capable. To him, it just made good sense. Today, 60 years later, over 50% of EF director level+ executives are women, and the company was recognized in 2024 by Forbes in the Top Companies for Women list. Founded in 1965, EF Education First is a global association of education companies that shares a common mission of opening the world through education, offering language, academic, cultural exchange, and education travel programs. Some companies are in the business of technology. Others are in the business of finance, sports, or soft drinks. At EF Education First, we’re in a different kind of business. One that’s a little less tangible, and a lot more important. We’re in the business of understanding. For 60 years we’ve been the leader in international educational programs and culturally rich travel experiences with the power to change how people think, feel and act. The programs we deliver open the world to students and travelers in ways that challenge biases, overcome barriers, and pave the way for a more understanding world. You’ll find us working across more than 50 countries, with offices in some of the world’s greatest cities—each one filled with smart, driven people who push each other to be better every day. And yes, we have technology, we have finance, we even have sports with our own professional cycling team. But it’s what we do with it—building greater understanding, breaking down barriers, and creating a better world that makes all the difference. ↘ 1966: Early stages of growing the business Story 4/60 60 stories for 60 years Bertil was constantly on the phone making deals, trying to stay fair. Else had worked at EF for nine months, and the two had become friends, working side by side. EF was expanding rapidly. The number of students sent abroad quadrupled in its second year. Bertil struggled to manage. Two new employees joined: Gun Sjölin, a lively, fast-typing dynamo, and Kaj Gahnström, who introduced EF to Finland. They were a young, close-knit team, working long hours and sharing lunches, bonded by mutual goals and Bertil’s leadership. When Bertil was upset, everyone cared. Money was tight despite the business boom. Families paid partial fees months in advance, but EF wouldn’t get the rest until just before summer trips began. Bills piled up, and Bertil asked the team to forgo salaries for a month or two. In June, creditors pressed harder. Then came an urgent call from the airline: the first plane with 109 Swedish students wouldn’t depart without payment. Bertil took the call, pleading with the manager. “You can’t leave these young people stranded,” he said. But the manager was firm: “No money, no airplane.” Slumping momentarily, Bertil quickly rallied. After making calls, he left the office. An hour later, he returned, notifying the airline a payment would be hand delivered within the hour. How? Else marveled at Bertil’s “nothing is impossible” resourcefulness. By some means, the plane took off that day. (Amended from the original version published in “Our Story” in 2014 to celebrate EF’s 50th anniversary) #WeAreEF #EF60

We have so many incredible travelers spreading the EF mission – but Diane’s story is truly inspiring. Since 1998, Diane Cortazzo has opened the world to over 1,000 students (with EF Educational Tours) and adults (with EF Go Ahead Tours), helping more people understand each other. From bringing a language to life as a German teacher in Pennsylvania, to curating her own tours in Italy, Diane is the epitome of a superhero ambassador. And it all started with a promise to her father. ↘ Read Diane’s story: https://lnkd.in/ewNZuufF Do you have someone who introduced you to the joys of travel? Tell us about them! #WeAreEF #EFImpact

At EF, we value new ideas and give people the ownership to make them happen. When Maddi, a Travel Operations Coordinator for EF World Journeys, saw an opportunity to educate colleagues on systemic inequities affecting youth and their access to travel, she took the lead. With support from our affinity group Black@EF, she coordinated The School-to-Prison Pipeline Event, featuring speakers from Citizens for Juvenile Justice. Hosted from our Boston office and streamed across North America, the event sparked conversations on how these issues connect to our work in travel and education. Got ideas? Got drive? ↘ 1965: EF’s first employee Story 3/60 60 stories for 60 years The phone rang, and 19-year-old Else answered. Smart and serious, this was her first real job, working for Bertil Hult, a young entrepreneur brimming with business ideas. “Hello?” she said. The caller asked for Bertil. “Just a moment,” she replied, trying to get his attention. That summer, Bertil had launched a language travel business, organizing a summer-abroad program in England for 406 Swedish high school students. It was a success, leaving him overwhelmed with office work. Else had been hired to help, joining him in a former dairy shop he’d converted into an office. The space was simple but well-designed, reflecting Bertil’s belief that good taste didn’t have to cost much. Else admired Bertil. She liked his work ethic and the kind way he spoke to his mother. Her tasks included writing letters and managing mail orders of imported goods that funded the language travel program. One day, a call came for Bertil. After hearing the caller’s name, he shook his head. “Say I’m not here,” he told Else. Uncomfortable, Else hesitated. She found it hard to lie. Still, she stammered into the phone, “He isn’t here.” Flustered, her face reddened as she hung up. “What’s wrong?” Bertil asked. “I’ve never lied before,” she admitted. Bertil later reflected, “Else was my first employee, and I learned an important lesson that day. Never ask someone to lie for you. How could you respect a boss who did that?” He vowed never to do it again. (Amended from the original version published in “Our Story” in 2014 to celebrate EF’s 50th anniversary) #WeAreEF #EF60
