We recently wrapped up Emerald’s 3rd Tokyo Open Innovation Conference, where over 100 key players in corporate venture capital and open innovation gathered to discuss the future of innovation in Japan. Here are five key takeaways from the event: 🗾Japanese companies dominate in high-value niche areas, holding over 50% of the global market share in 500 products—each with an average market size of $5 billion. ✔️For open innovation to succeed, executives must embed it into company culture, ensuring it’s not just an option but a necessity—mobilizing talent from the bottom up. 🌍Since 2023, Europe has surpassed North America in climate tech deals, driven by stable policies and strong corporate net-zero commitments. ❕While KPIs drive open innovation, the real impact comes from creating a "WOW" factor that energizes organizations and fosters a culture of breakthrough thinking. 🤖AI is set to transform entire industrial value chains—from material discovery and R&D to manufacturing, sales, recycling, and logistics. Companies must invest in a scalable, ethical, and data-driven AI culture. Reach out to Stephen Marcus to learn more! #Japan #openinnovation #cvc #corporateventurecapital #climatetech

👏 Congratulations to portfolio company FIDO Tech on their collaboration with Meta! The agreement will help Meta make progress towards its commitment to be water positive in 2030. It also highlights the vital role of water in sustaining data centers and is a great example of water stewardship in action.
🌊 Exciting news! Meta has joined forces with FIDO Tech to tackle water scarcity in the Colorado River Basin through innovative AI technology. Through a ground-breaking 10-year agreement, Meta will fund FIDO AI deployment across 300km of pipeline network in Farmington, New Mexico, marking a significant step toward their 2030 water positive commitment. This partnership, part of the Water United initiative alongside Microsoft, PepsiCo, and other industry leaders, showcases how AI can drive real environmental impact. The FIDO Plus program pairs corporations with local utilities to reduce water leakage and improve community water resilience through advanced AI technology. As Stefanie Woodward, Water Restoration Lead at Meta, puts it: "There's a genuine need to accelerate collective action for water restoration efforts... With our data centre in the Colorado River basin, Farmington has been the earliest opportunity we have to work with AI in basin restoration." The Colorado River Basin supports $1.4 trillion in economic activity and provides water for over 40 million people across seven Western states. This collaboration between tech and utilities demonstrates how innovative partnerships can address critical environmental challenges.
