One of the most challenging thermodynamic efficiency measurements has been the recent measurements in the hydropower plant (HPP) of Pradella. This HPP is equipped with turbines at the lower limit of feasible specific speeds (NQE = 0.045, n = 750 rpm, H = 484 m, Q = 17 m3/s, P = 72 MW). The HPP is operated by Engadiner Kraftwerke AG. The energy density of such Francis machines is immense and there are strong forces in the draft tube, especially at part load operation. That's why the pipes containing the temperature sensors and the sealing of the cables coming out of the draft tube must be well designed. Pradella is the second largest HPP in Switzerland in terms of production (the four Francis turbines generate around 1’000 Mio. kWh - or 1’000 GWh). etaeval GmbH carried out thermodynamic efficiency measurements on units 1 and 2 prior to the refurbishment project in 2018, and the guarantee verification measurements between 2022 and 2024 on all four units after each individual commissioning. The fact that efficiency measurements were carried out before and after the technical work played an important role in the success of the comprehensive renovation project. Actual data for the design engineering of the turbine supplier, clear economic evidence for the operator and important inputs for the tender documents are just some of the reasons why efficiency measurements before and after a refurbishment project are essential.
