🌊🐟 In India, the moratorium on new fishmeal factories has been lifted. However, experts and fishermen say that greater consideration must be given to sustainability if fishermen are to have a future. The fishmeal industry helps feed animals in aquaculture. It risks emptying the sea in the process. They must ensure that no juvenile fish are caught and that fish populations are preserved. ⚖️ Let's fight together for sustainable fishing and aquaculture! 💪 🔗 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/datytbFV 📷: Krishnendu Biswas - pexels.com #sustainability #fishmeal #fishing #aquaculture #environmentalprotection #biodiversity #marinelife #protectingthefuture #protectingtheoceans #protectingfish

fair-fish cooperates with players in fishery and aquaculture who respect animal welfare, fair trade and nature.
Info
The aim of the fair-fish international association is to contribute to the international breakthrough of animal welfare for fish, in particular food fish. At the same time it takes the criteria of sustainability and fair trade into account. The association is the holder of the fair-fish name and brand. It defines the guidelines that authorise the use of the fair-fish label. The association provides information to the public and cooperates with interested experts, marketers and organisations with related objectives. The association pursues neither profit-making nor self-help purposes. The association’s tasks are • Developing guidelines for fishing and fish-farming • Conclusion of license agreements • Assignment of certification and control agencies • Proclamation and protection of the fair-fish name and brand within the scope of the means available • Laying the groundwork, in terms of content, for the activity of fair-fish associations in the context of defined projects, and relieving these associations by taking on individual tasks within the scope of the means available.

🌍 Our oceans need protection! 🌊 🐟⚠️ Worldwide fish stocks are in danger because overfishing and illegal fishing methods are never-ending. Some fishing companies even use forced labor. This is not only unfair for nature, but also for the people who work on the ships. 🙍♂️ 🚤 🌊 But there is hope! Organizations like Global Fishing Watch are campaigning for better control of the fishing industry and fair working conditions. In addition, governments must stop supporting the overexploitation of the oceans through subsidies and ensure better laws. 👨⚖️ In the USA, conservation laws have already been successful: Sea turtles, seabirds and whales are better protected, and certain fish stocks are slowly recovering. But much more is needed globally! 🦀 fair-fish believes that wild fish from non-endangered stocks of European anchovy and king mackerel are acceptable. Even more ethical and environmentally friendly are predominantly herbivorous fish such as carp and tilapia from extensive pond farming. Protect our oceans - for animals, people and the future! 💙🐠 You can find out more here: https://lnkd.in/dr6zR2PS 📷: Quang Nguyen Vinh - pexels.com

🚨🐟 Fishermen in Kerala want to tackle anchovy crisis! Faced with a “fish drought” off the coast of Kerala, Kerala's fishermen have asked the Indian government for help. The fishermen explained that the decline in fish catches was worsened by global warming and the El Niño effect, which warmed the water in the oceans. Charles George, President of the Fishermen's Association, emphasized that years of decline in anchovy catch in Kerala has led to a huge financial loss. We should fight together against the decline in fish populations for the future of Kerala's fishermen. 👉 Read more about this under the following link: https://lnkd.in/dm4_6CV8 📷: Jonny Kennaugh - unsplash #fishing #Kerala #sustainability #anchovies #fishinglife #speciesextinction #fisheriesmanagement #coastalfishermen #fishstocks #environmentalprotection #India #fishermen

🔍🐟 Did you know that the scales of a fish show its age in a similar way to the rings on a tree? 🌳🐠 This has to do with the fact that the scales grow with the fish, which can then be recognized by the rings of different thicknesses on the scales. In summer, when there is a lot of food, fish grow faster and the scales have wide rings; in winter, when they grow more slowly, narrower rings appear on the scales. These rings can be counted under the microscope to determine their age! 🔬 If the fish is no longer alive, small “ear stones” in the head - the otoliths - can also be used to determine the years of growth. 🧬🐟 👉 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dbNxdDXH 📷: MaxwellFury – Pixabay

🌊🐟 Introducing our 88th profile - the blue tilapia (Oreochromis aureus) in the fair-fish database: The blue tilapia is an adaptable tropical fish species that lives in warm ponds, lakes and rivers in Africa and Eurasia. 🌍💧 It is particularly cold-resistant and thrives at temperatures of 8 to 30 °C. This species has a varied diet, from algae and plants to invertebrates and smaller fish. 🦐🍃 Thanks to this adaptability, the blue tilapia is bred worldwide. Because they like to feed on aquatic plants and algae, blue tilapia are also often introduced into bodies of water where these are to be reduced in order to maintain or restore the balance in the ecosystem. However, despite its popularity, important information about its behavior in the wild is lacking: How far does it migrate? How does it use its habitat? On farms, all-male tilapia are in demand because they grow faster. Manual sex determination and hormonal sex change are therefore commonplace. However, these practices raise questions about the welfare of the fish. 👉 If you would like to find out more, you can find the “WelfareCheck” here: https://lnkd.in/dQgTDA-D 📷: fair-fish #marineprotection #sustainablefisheries #EuropeanHake #fisheries #speciesprotection #protectingoceans #marinelife #fisheriesmanagement #fairfish #healthyoceans

🌊🐟 Did you know that the average person in Switzerland consumes around 9 kilograms of fish per year? Over 95 percent of this is imported. fair-fish was founded in 2000 as a pioneering organization for the welfare of fish in fisheries and aquaculture. We are passionately committed to ensuring that fish are treated with the respect they deserve. They, who feel emotions such as fear and joy. 🐠💙 📚🔬 Over the years, we have learned a lot about fish thanks to our fair-fish database and international research projects. But the road to sustainable and animal-friendly fishing and aquaculture is still a long one. 🚀 We would like you to join us on this mission! 🤝 The commitment to the welfare of fish in farming and fishing is becoming increasingly urgent. It is time to change the way we look at these animals. 🐟 👉 Want to find out more about what we do and how you can help? Visit our website. 📢🐟 New publication! Caroline Marques Maia and Joao L. Saraiva from fair-fish and FishEthoGroup, together with Eliane Gonçalves de Freitas, have published a study in Frontiers in Veterinary Science. 📑 In it, they examine which of the criteria assessed in the fair-fish database (https://lnkd.in/eqymMJfj) have the greatest impact on fish welfare. 🔍 They found that there is great potential to improve the welfare of fish, particularly in terms of reproduction, the substrate and slaughter. It is particularly important to adapt reproduction to the natural needs and behavior of the animals. 🐠✨ 📌 At the same time, gaps in knowledge on topics such as aggression, movement space, stress and malformations were identified. 👉 Fancy more details?
