The 2024 Official FIDIC International Contract Users’ Conference is underway! The opening day of this flagship event kicked off with FIDIC President Catherine Karakatsanis MESc PEng FCAE ICD.D LL.D D.Eng, who reminded us of the critical role FIDIC contracts play in the global construction and infrastructure industry. Key insights from her address: ✅ FIDIC contracts are widely used by major international multilateral development banks. ✅ New agreements signed with the key multinational development banks ensure continued adoption for the next five years. ✅ FIDIC contracts promote fair and balanced approaches, creating much-needed certainty in the market. 💡 Karakatsanis also recognised the dedication of FIDIC’s Contracts Committee, led by the committee chair, Vincent Leloup and Daduna Kokhreidze, FCIArb, FIDIC’s general counsel. The opening keynote was delivered by Christopher Seppälä, legal advisor to the FIDIC Contracts Committee and author of The FIDIC Red Book Contract. Seppälä reflected on the evolution of FIDIC contracts, noting the historical influence of the World Bank in their development, which continues today. He also highlighted the tireless work of the FIDIC Contracts Committee in greatly expanding the suite of contracts over the years. A common feature of this work has been efforts to keep the contracts relevant in a changing industry.
