🥁 2025 Theme Unveiling 🥁 - EXTREME ENVIRONMENTS As global temperatures rise, will we humans have to adapt as extremophiles? What are the determining factors of resilience? How can we achieve this adaptation? What might a human being or animal look like in the year 2500? What are the physical, psychological and technological limits we face, and how can we go beyond what is generally considered possible? This year’s exhibition, “Extreme Environments: Beyond Limits”, will explore extremophiles stories of resilience that challenge our perceptions of life’s boundaries, and try to predict humanity’s shape(s), centuries from now. Call for projects opening soon - stay tuned! #figure1a #artcompetitions #scientificart #extremeenvironments #scientificartexhibition

Some changes backstage at Figure 1. A. HQ. We’re excited to welcome Anna Anchimiuk, PhD and An Buckinx as co-presidents! Anna is a scientist at heart turned product manager in the industry and An is a science communicator with a background in neurosciences. We asked them what Figure 1. A. means to them and here is what they said: Anna: Figure 1. A. is a playground for experimenting with science communication, taking a creative and inclusive approach over a purely factual one. I want to continue building partnerships between different fields of art and science as I believe each brings unique and important perspectives to shared questions. An: Figure 1. A. embodies a vision I've long held: an inclusive, dynamic space where science is celebrated, challenged, and brought to life. As co-president, my goal is to create opportunities for scientists to connect directly with artists, and explore the art-science intersection. Together, we’ll turn science into an experience of marvel and curiosity that everybody can feel a part of. Learn more about our team at figure1a.org

Last awarded art piece of 2024 of this little retrospective. It won the jury selection, cheers! EDTA and Tequila, Jose Manuel Lopez, Química Tech, Mexico The artist predicts an interdisciplinary future where one can’t solve a problem or address a need by using a single area of expertise. Science, art, engineering, and society must be interconnected to be useful. EDTA and Tequila shows bubbles of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) dissolved in tequila, where the light rays coming out from each bubble seem to connect to other bubbles, making an interdisciplinary network. Each bubble is thought as an area of expertise that’s beautiful by itself, but more importantly, when interconnected with other bubbles, it creates a beautiful whole. The image shows an area of 293x219 micrometers; the biggest bubble has a diameter of 43 micrometers, and the smallest 22 micrometers. #sciart #interdisciplinarity #🔬

Check out this stunning animation intertwining art and science that won the Jury selection this year! Alberi della vita, Claudia Cantoni, Independent artist, Switzerland Natural micro and macrocosm reverberate in this painting. The result of the triple repetition of tree leaves, and of the yellow, red and green cells, alludes to a woodland landscape. Set of fibroblasts and induced neurons. Cytoskeleton is stained in RFP red by the neuronal β-III-Tubulin protein, while the vimentin protein is stained with GFP green fluorophore. Digital video showing the drawing creation with the insertion of 3 confocal microscope images taken by Ester Piovesana during her research for neurodegenerative diseases at the Bios Lab in Bellinzona, Ticino. The images were digitally integrated into foliage of a forest. #SciArt #Scicomm #NeurodegenerativeDiseases

Let’s explore the multiverse! This art piece took home both the Jury selection and public vote this year. Microportals into diverse futures, Helena Klein, D-USYS, ETH Zürich, Switzerland "Micro portal into diverse futures" serves as a gateway into a dreamscape envisioned by the artist where diversity reigns supreme, both in the delicate intricacies of nature and the rich tapestry of human existence. The artistic composition captures the essence of unity and harmony, envisioning a future where nature and humanity thrive in a spectrum of colors, free from biases and celebrating the beauty of diversity. It's a poetic journey into a world where dreams of a diverse future come to life, encapsulated within tiny contours, serving as a symbolic portal to big possibilities yet to come true. #SciArt #Diversity #ScienceCommunication

We’re looking back at this great piece from a Figure 1.A. alumni, which won both the Jury’s selection and the public vote. Tsunami, Beric Henderson, Independent Artist, Australia. Our oceans are changing : microplastics contamination, natural disaster fallout such as the Fukushima nuclear reactor catastrophe, sea level rise, currents speeding up... Tsunami suggests a future world where the oceans experience ongoing constant tsunamis and the sea has swamped the land and overtaken the planet. It urges a reflection on the power, importance and beauty of Earth’s oceans, as well as the critical role ongoing research will play in understanding and maintaining it. #SciArt #OceanArt #ClimateCrisis #Figure1A

While we work on the next edition of Figure 1. A., we leave you reminiscing with our winners from this year. This first art piece won both the Jury selection & the Figure1A Team Favourite! Goodbye Deer Friend by Audrey Lambiel, University of Geneva Switzerland. This visual representation illustrates the modeled landscape connectivity for red deer in a region of the Valais canton. The absence of possible passages is denoted by black, while lighter shades highlight vital connectivity areas such as bridges beneath roads or railways. Some areas such as mountain ridges or rivers represent natural barriers, whereas cities or highways are artificial. Facilitating connectivity between biodiversity hotspots is essential for maintaining gene flow and species persistence. However, this connectivity is increasingly jeopardized by landscape artificialization and the isolation of local habitats. • • #sciart #sciencecommunication #reddeer #naturalhabitat #🦌 #valaiswallis
