As someone committed to #OpenScience, I want to express my support for this open letter addressing JUFO’s decision to downgrade some Frontiers journals. This issue implicates us but it transcends us as well - it’s about the principles of transparency, fairness, and openness that are vital to the research community. 💡 Here’s why this matters: JUFO’s decision appears to lack clear evidence, directly contradicting the Declaration for Open Science 2020–2025, which emphasizes openness as a core value for the research community. How can we build a truly open research ecosystem if evaluations are shrouded in ambiguity? 📉 The real-world impact of this decision: Finnish researchers are disadvantaged since many rely on Frontiers to share their work globally through high-quality, accessible journals. By downgrading these journals, JUFO undermines their contributions and narrows their publishing options. Transparency takes a hit because the criteria behind the decision remain unclear. This lack of openness goes against the very principles JUFO claims to uphold. 👩🔬 What’s being overlooked? As an employee at Frontiers, I know this can be read as a partial assessment, but I see firsthand how our rigorous peer-review processes and commitment to continuous improvement are integral to our mission - I wouldn't work here otherwise. This is not to say that we don't make or haven't made mistakes along the way, but we strive to prioritize community feedback and we adapt to ensure we meet the highest standards. These values are aligned with—not in opposition to - the goals of Open Science. 📢 A call for change: Our contributors are asking for this decision to be reconsidered by establishing an evaluation process that is: ✅ Transparent: publish the criteria and feedback used for journal assessments. ✅ Fact-based: decisions should be grounded in measurable, evidence-based criteria. ✅ Collaborative: actively involve researchers in the dialogue to reflect their experiences and needs. This is about more than journals—it’s about the future of scientific collaboration and ensuring that knowledge serves everyone, not just a select few. At Frontiers we are always available to work together and uphold the values of transparency and fairness that should guide every decision in the research ecosystem. #OpenAccess #TransparencyInResearch #OpenLetter #JUFO
