  • What’s the hardest skill to master in humanitarian negotiation? 🧐 Imagine... You’re sitting across the table, negotiations are tense, and every word (and silence) matters. In these high-stakes conversations, some skills can make or break the outcome. But which one is the toughest to master, according to you? - Active listening: truly hearing what is and is not being said. - Building trust: a slow process in fast-moving crises. - Managing emotions: staying calm when tensions rise. - Handling power dynamics: navigating complex hierarchies and agendas. 👉 Vote in the poll and share your thoughts in the comments: What has been the most challenging for you? Do you have strategies that helped you overcome it?

  • How can humanitarian negotiators effectively integrate International Humanitarian Law (IHL) when protecting civilians in armed conflicts? 💡 IHL plays a crucial role in protecting civilians in armed conflicts. Yet, its application is often questioned, and humanitarian negotiations become essential to bridge the gap between legal frameworks and reality on the ground. Through a series of expert-led webinars, we explored the challenges negotiators face in the protection of civilians, including: - Limited understanding of IHL, weakening legitimacy. - Translating complex legal language into accessible terms. - Misalignment between IHL protections and communities' immediate needs. We also came up with actionable solutions like: ✅ Learning and simplifying IHL: Using real-life examples to make it relevant. ✅ Addressing immediate priorities first to build trust, then linking them to broader IHL principles. ✅ Approaching all parties neutrally: listening actively is key.   👉 What challenges have you encountered when engaging on IHL in humanitarian negotiations? Share your insights in the comments!

  • ⛑ How can mediation efforts foster trust and safeguard communities in conflict situations? In today’s episode of 'Frontline Negotiators: Stories from the Field', we delve into the concept of protection, often misunderstood in humanitarian contexts, yet vital for civilian well-being. Together with Jerome Grimaud, we explore how humanitarian actors can negotiate protection outcomes by framing discussions in the communities' own words and vision rather than relying on legalistic terms. We also examine the role of a mediation approach in fostering dialogue between affected communities and other stakeholders (armed actors, other communities), enabling communities to negotiate their own solutions to the challenges they face. "Mediation is working around options that would reflect each and everyone's consent, priorities and hopes for the future" -Jérôme Grimaud Don't miss this new episode of 'Frontline Negotiators: Stories from the Field' 👉 https://hubs.la/Q036lhR40
