    Neuroscience in Learning Design Last November, GAIA Insights founder @Martina Mangelsdorf obtained a new qualification as Certified Facilitator for Neuroscience in Training, Consulting & Coaching awarded by the @Akademie für angewandte Neurowissenschaft A|F|A|N. Everything we humans feel, how we decide and behave originates in the brain. Over the past decades, neuroscience has intensively researched and uncovered many of these processes. The findings about the functioning and mechanisms of the brain are helpful in understanding ourselves and other people better. Such science-based knowledge is particularly useful in training, consulting and coaching in order to make unconscious processes visible and achieve greater effectiveness. Neuroscience helps to understand: How do perception, motivation, stress, decision-making and memory work? How is personality anchored in the brain and why do we find change difficult? What findings does brain research have in relation to leadership? With this new or reinforced knowledge, Martina is now even better equipped to lead our program development and instructional learning design.     Doing Business Within Planetary Boundaries For the past 11,000 years, planet Earth has been in a relatively stable state. But not anymore. Since the middle of the 20th century, human activity and its impact on Earth’s natural systems has grown tremendously. Human activities are now threatening the biological systems we rely on – to the extent that continued human progress and well-being are in jeopardy. We have directly altered at least 70% of the planet’s land surface and over 66% of the ocean. Over 96% of Earth’s mammal biomass is now made up of humans (36%) and our livestock (60%) – with less than 4% represented by wild animals. Almost 15 years ago, scientists created a framework called “planetary boundaries” to clarify the diverse pressures humanity is putting on Earth. The boundaries represent estimated limits for nine global processes, beyond which our climate and living ecosystems risk becoming destabilized and unpredictable, and could cease to provide the goods and services we rely on. Until recently, corporate environmental performance measures focused primarily on global greenhouse gas emissions, often neglecting the vital importance of local environmental impact. A new report helps business leaders understand how to do business within the nine planetary boundaries. The report builds on ten years of transdisciplinary science, combining sustainable finance with ecological economics, resilience science, and Earth system science.     AI in Learning Design These past few months, we attended multiple online events and courses about AI in Learning Design. We must admit, we had our concerns and hesitated quite a bit - can we as an organization that prides itself in a focus on human-centric leadership engage in AI activities without tarnishing our brand? What about the ethical dilemmas linked to AI? What could happen if we begin to use AI… and then it hit us: What if we don’t? AI has come to stay, whether we like it or not. We can either ignore, deny and condemn it - or we can explore, embrace and shape it. Well, at least we can decide how we engage with it. We can leverage it for the benefits and efficiency gains it brings. It doesn't have to be a threat to our brand nor does it change our conviction that leadership is in its essence a human quality. If we cannot escape the curve, let’s be ahead of it! As we learned in the courses we attended, AI in Learning Design enables facilitators to enhance and improve their instructional design. Smart use of AI tools can help to better serve learners to accomplish their development goals and to retain, share and use their newly acquired knowledge effectively.
