By now, most people have heard of chain-of-thought prompting: LLMs perform better when you break down the problem into steps. Today Denny Zhou, research director for LLM reasoning at Google DeepMind, gave a wonderful talk on the topic. A few of the many insights: - In the absence of a worked example or carefully laid out steps, LLM reasoning can be triggered by the simple prompt “think step by step”. - Prompting analogical reasoning can also work well (something like “think about a similar problem”). - Irrelevant information greatly increases the chances of mistakes but that problem can be ameliorated by asking the LLM to “ignore irrelevant information”.
