How INGOs Drive Impact Finance: Key Takeaways from the Impact Week⬇️ At the #ImpactWeek 2024 Bilbao, at our session with the Alliance2015 we explored how INGOs, like Helvetas, bring unique local insights and established networks to the table — critical for mitigating risks and maximizing impact in emerging markets. ✅ Andreas Müller discussed the following ❶ Diversifying Dependencies: Beyond traditional funding, Helvetas explores new business models, like Impact Linked Finance in Sri Lanka and a Green Rice Bond for Sub-Saharan Africa. ❷ Impact First vs. Return First: Sustainable investment requires balancing financial returns with long-term impact — essential in contexts deemed "too risky" for conventional investors. ✅ As part of the table discussions, Siham Boukhali shared insights from our work on the Green Rice Bond for Sub-Saharan Africa. In collaboration with iGravity, this initiative aims to mobilize $50M to strengthen local rice value chains and promote sustainable agricultural practices. The bond pairs financing with a grant-funded technical assistance facility to empower local financial partners and farmers allied intermediaries. ✅ The Balance of Impact and Risk: The panellists shared important insights, including why NGOs, as experts on the ground, are uniquely positioned to identify high-impact opportunities and push boundaries to redefine how impact is achieved and measured. This dialogue reinforced the vital role of INGOs in aligning impact investments with sustainable development goals while fostering innovative, inclusive solutions. SonntagsZeitung recently featured Swiss NGOs that are supporting people around the world 🌎 The article highlights our work on vocational education in Ethiopia. Did you know that around 70% of Ethiopia's population is under the age of 30, and about a quarter of them are unemployed, often due to school dropouts caused by poverty? Together with local partners, Helvetas developed 23 training programs that helped over 5000 young people, mostly women, to learn a profession. Our incentive model ensures training providers are paid only when graduates secure jobs or start businesses, increasing both training quality and employment prospects. The #COP29 #climate conference in Baku has left us with deep concerns. While some progress was made — such as concretizing the Global Adaptation Goal and outlining plans for further cooperation — the overall results fall painfully short of what’s needed. The financial commitments, though tripled to $300 billion, are far below the $1–1.3 trillion required. And when adjusted for inflation and the inclusion of loans, this is no real increase at all. “Climate finance must be grant-based, not loan-based, to uphold principles of climate justice”, says Christina Aebischer, Advisor Climate Adaptation & Advocacy at Helvetas. Switzerland and other industrialized nations failed to deliver, and their restrictive financial stance is eroding trust in the Global South. As Alliance Sud highlights, this financial shortfall has shaken the poorest countries and small island states, leaving them increasingly vulnerable to the climate crisis. Even more troubling, no significant steps were taken to phase out fossil fuels or accelerate the green transition. Science is clear: to stay below 1.5°C warming, emissions must be halved by 2030 — just 1,000 days away. Helvetas remains committed to advocating for ambitious climate action and will continue its efforts to drive meaningful outcomes at #COP30 in 2025. What are YOUR thoughts on the outcomes of COP29? An investigation into Switzerland's pioneering project to offset CO2 emissions with efficient cookstoves in Ghana reveals shortcomings and dangers.   It is true that new cookstoves are an inexpensive way to improve the lives of many people in poorer countries and at the same time reduce greenhouse gas emissions ...   BUT: ❌ Climate compensation projects, e.g. with cooking stoves, cannot replace climate protection in Switzerland and the socio-ecological transformation at home. ❌ CO2 reduction and the respective climate impact is much lower than hoped for and reported by those responsible (keyword: #greenwashing). ❌ Once again, certain companies and investors appear to be among the big winners in the offsetting business. ❌ The market mechanism of certificate trading creates false and dangerous incentives that ultimately undermine honest efforts to achieve the climate protection that is needed worldwide.   WHAT WE NEED: ✅ Climate action (mitigation and adaptation) in poorer countries should be provided and supported via #internationalClimateFinance. ✅ Companies and investors that are fueling the climate crisis must contribute to the financing of climate measures in poor countries (#makePollutersPay). ✅ Absolute #transparency and honest #reporting are needed in CO2 certificate trading. ✅ Emissions trading does not exempt any country from consistently advancing domestic climate protection and striving for and implementing #climateNeutrality in a socially responsible manner (#JustTransition) and as quickly as possible.   An investigation by Alliance Sud that reads like an economic thriller and is well worth reading ... Gemeinsam lancierten wir im Nachgang der Coronapandemie und vor dem Hintergrund zunehmender Krisen und Klimaschäden im Süden den «Appell für Globale Gerechtigkeit». Der Aufruf wurde von Persönlichkeiten aus Kultur, Politik und Wirtschaft unterstützt und fordert einen angemessenen Beitrag der Schweiz zur Bekämpfung von Armut, Ungleichheit und Hunger – und damit zur Erreichung der nachhaltigen Entwicklungsziele der UNO. To what extent can #migration represent an economic opportunity for #youth in West and North Africa? At what cost? And under what conditions? Join us for an event (held in French) that unveils groundbreaking insights from over 1,800 young migrants, shedding light on their journeys, vulnerabilities, and the solutions needed to improve their economic integration. La migration des jeunes en Afrique de l’Ouest et du Nord soulève des défis complexes, notamment en matière d'accès à l'emploi et d'insertion économique. Pourtant, leurs parcours, leurs besoins spécifiques et les impacts sur leur vulnérabilité restent largement méconnus.
