Info
Established in 1863, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian help for people affected by conflict and armed violence and to promote the laws that protect victims of war. An independent and neutral organization, its mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. It takes action in response to emergencies and promotes respect for international humanitarian law and its implementation in national law. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. #FactFriday | In the first half of 2024, we ensured that 5.5 million people in Syria have better access to clean water. Our work aims to support the country's essential services infrastructure, which is on the brink of collapse.

✅ Delivering safe drinking water ✅ Helping repair water infrastructure ✅ Assessing existing essential services ✅ Building and renovating facilities These are just some of the ways we ensure that people affected by armed conflict have access to clean water, shelter, and other essential services. Thinking out of the box is to approach challenges in a creative and unconventional way. It involves looking beyond traditional methods and exploring new, innovative ideas. Mine Action projects can benefit from breaking free from established patterns and considering alternative solutions. The ICRC is today launching a guideline where we’ve included an “out of the box” approach to challenges related to Cross-Border Humanitarian Demining. We have been inspired by methodologies applied in successful projects like the clearance of minefields at the Skallingen Peninsula in Denmark and the equally complex project in the Falkland Islands. A big thanks to Professor Stuart Maslen for the legal expertise, to Daniel Perkins for the strategic thinking and to Louis Maresca for making text into this excellent guideline which can be found here: https://lnkd.in/dCcqfEfg #MineAction, #ICRC, #EOD

People do not commit rape by accident. This is just one survivor's story. It's tough, but it's important viewing. Sexual violence is a crime, whenever and wherever it takes place. #16DaysOfActivism #EndStigma

Landmines and unexploded ordnance are a serious threat in conflict-affected areas, such as Afghanistan, Colombia, Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine, among others. This hidden danger lurks on or beneath the surface, waiting to cause death and destruction at any moment. Gilles Carbonnier , ICRC Vice-President, shares 👇🏽

The Geneva Conventions, adopted in 1949 and ratified worldwide, are the backbone of international humanitarian law. They: 🔹 Protect those who are not or are no longer fighting 🔹 Save lives and reduce suffering Even in armed conflicts, humanity must prevail. Daniel Palmieri, ICRC historian, explains 👇🏽
