Info

ILGA World – the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association - is a worldwide federation of more than 1,700 organisations from over 160 countries and territories campaigning for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex human rights. We want a world where the human rights of all are respected and where everyone can live in equality and freedom: a world where global justice and equity are assured and established regardless of people’s sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions and sex characteristics (SOGIESC). Established in 1978, ILGA World has ECOSOC consultative status at the United Nations. Our member organisations are based in our six regions: Pan Africa ILGA, ILGA Asia, ILGA-Europe, ILGALAC (Latin America and the Caribbean), ILGA North America and ILGA Oceania. Governed by an elected Board of 19 activists representing our global family, ILGA World is queer democracy in action!

As we continue to recognise the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Cristina González Hurtado, former Chair of the ILGA World's Women Committee and Founder of Red LESLAC, shares a critical message about the increase in violence against LBQT women in the Latin America region. Now more than ever, we need to hold our leaders accountable for the harm being done to women in our communities, call for more protection for LBQT women and work together to end violence against women. Take an opportunity to learn more about the work of LESLAC and other organisations in the ILGALAC region working to improve the lives of LGBT women.

Today is recognised as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It is a critical time for us to interrogate discriminatory and patriarchal systems that continue to normalise violence in different forms against LBQTI women. Be a part of the change and speak up when you can against discrimination and harmful behaviours against LBQTI women. Today is #TDoR2024, a day of tremendous grief. We have been commemorating Trans Day of Remembrance since 1999 when we united in grief to remember Rita Hester, a black trans woman who had been murdered. Despite our best efforts, 25 years later, the violence not only continues but is actively encouraged by global anti-rights efforts that deny the very existence of trans people, fuel hatred and oppose the recognition of the basic human rights of trans people. This year, the Trans Murder Monitoring Project by TGEU has recorded one of the highest numbers of murders (350) since the project records began in 2008, totalling more than 5,000 documented murders. This is no doubt a consequence of the concerted efforts of anti-gender and anti-rights movements that instrumentalise and vilify trans people to push wider anti-democratic political agendas. TGEU — Trans Europe and Central Asia , GATE - Global Action for Trans Equality, ILGA World, APTN - Asia Pacific Transgender Network, IGLYO — The International LGBTQI Youth & Student Organisation, and ESWA have developed a joint statement for Trans Day of Remembrance 2024 to honour the lives of our siblings and demand safety amidst growing hate and anti-rights movements through clear calls to action for policymakers, lawmakers, and donors. Read and spread the full Joint Statement to help protect trans lives now: https://lnkd.in/djmiWcQG IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Text reads: "Trans Day of Remembrance 2024 joint statement by TGEU, GATE, ILGA World, APTN, IGLYO and ESWA: We honour the lives of our siblings and demand safety amidst growing hate and anti-trans movements". Today, on Trans Day of Remembrance, we pause to reflect and pay tribute to the lives of trans and gender-diverse friends, family members, activists, community leaders and others who were taken away from us. We will remember their names and honour their stories and the impact they left. #TransDayOfRememberance IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Illustrations of people clothed in the colours of the trans flag with one of them holding the flag. Yesterday, the United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner addressed the #ILGA2024 World Conference in a video message! “These are difficult moments for the LGBTIQ+ human rights movement. But we have been here before. We have faced similar obstacles; heard the same lies; seen the same efforts to shame and stigmatize. And we overcame them -- with human rights, equality and the dignity of every human being as our beacon. Because when people try to dehumanise others, we lead with empathy.” Follow the link to read the statement in full: https://lnkd.in/e28NZENr
