Today’s European tradition comes from the UK! 💂 Mummers’ Holiday Plays are dramatizations of folk tales held at Christmastime in many parts of the United Kingdom. 🎫 There are several versions of mummering. The most common plot involves combat between two characters, usually a Saint, or King George, and an evil character. 🎭 These plays are performed, traditionally, by ordinary people rather than professional actors and are designed as a fun way to let off steam during the holidays. What is the Dutch Christmas tradition involving shoes? 👞 Sinterklaas is based on a legendary figure called St. Nicholas, to you and me Santa Claus! The Sinterklaasfeest, celebrated on the evening of the 5th of December, takes its inspiration from the charitable activity of helping the poor by putting money in their shoes, which later evolved into putting presents in children’s shoes. Before going to bed, Dutch kids fill up one of their shoes with a present for Sinterklaas and his horse and place it by the fireplace. This is accompanied by a Sinterklaas song, sung so loud and clear that Sinterklaas will be able to hear it up on the roof. 🥕 In the morning, they wake up to find chocolate coins, candy and cookies shaped in the letter of their first name, and sometimes a small toy. 🍫 You can learn more about the tradition via the link in the comment box. 👇
