Are We Fully Harnessing Swiss Innovation Power? How do we remain ahead and competitive in the race of global “innovation”? Switzerland consistently ranks at the top of global innovation indices - a testament to our world-class research institutions and vibrant private sector. At the recent #openi24 Zürich event, this success was widely celebrated. But does it mean no changes are needed? During an interview with Federal Council Guy Parmelin on Day 2 of the #openi24, the issue of financial constraints took center stage. Does less funding mean less innovation? No doubt, money makes the music play, and without it, innovation would not reach society. But is a shortage, or a crisis, not also a chance to rethink how we innovate and bring breakthroughs to society? In a panel discussion with Dominique Gruhl-Begin (Innosuisse) and Pascale Bruderer (ETH Zürich Council), challenges were revealed, but confidence in the “Swiss recipe” for innovation was also expressed. A short side chat with Dominique revealed the discussion was running out of time and they could not reach the point on how to tackle the challenges and how we can bridge the financial shortfall from the Swiss government. Switzerland offers great and fertile conditions for companies to settle down. The country’s universities are pearls, recognized as such worldwide. The state allocates significant part of its budget to ETH/EPFL, which were celebrated and highlighted several times. No doubt we are all proud of these eminent institutions in Switzerland. At the same time, two-thirds of the total investment in innovation or R&D (Research & Development) comes from private industry, not from the state or state-financed innovation offices. Are we using this two-thirds efficiently? Where does Switzerland focus, and where is innovation happening? A part of the “Swiss recipe” is the great mix of academia, research institutes, large corporates and hands on small and medium-sized companies (SMEs). Is this polygon, let’s call it Swiss Dream Team, playing at its best? The knowledge and technology density in Switzerland is immense. But we are also facing challenges in identifying each other at the time of need. This leads to the fact that, in a country of SMEs, we are “reinventing the wheel” over and over again. What if we could benefit from this richness of knowledge and technology at the time of need? Do you have a solution for inter- and intra connecting industry, research centers, and academia efficiently, so we can benefit from this treasure? I am curious to read about your constructive solutions and opinions. Innofuse Switzerland #InnofuseSwitzerland, #openi24, #innovation, #SwissInnovation, #SwissTech, #FundingInnovation
