📢 We are excited to announce that we will be support two new student-led project in sustainability at the University of Basel. The projects applied for the second call of the #SHAPE Project (Student Hub for Action, Projects and Engagement) enabled by U Change and will be receive an initial funding of 2000 CHF each. 🧪 𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗘 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗙 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗯 ⚡ This project tackles the critical issue of high energy consumption and CO₂ emissions in research laboratories. Starting at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research, the project group aims to create a lasting sustainability culture and generating a momentum for long-term visibility and reduce the negative environmental impact lab facilities have at the current status quo. 🗣️ 𝗥𝗵𝘆(𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴) 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗗𝗚𝘀 🌊 The project, will make a contribution to the transfer of knowledge from sustainability research to the general public, by bringing the topic of sustainable (urban) development to young people in fun and interactive city tours. Going beyond the theoretical and abstract debate, the tour is designed to enable young people to get to know local initiatives, ask their own questions and take a critical look at the SDGs and get inspired to act responsibly and become active. 👏 We are looking forward to supporting these projects by linking them with our network and bringing in our experience to create impact and scale in collaboration with the @Sustainability Office. #SHAPE #Impact #Studentproject

🌟 Entrepreneurship in Healthcare – The Valley of Death Revisited 🌟 Last week as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) Basel the Innovation Office University of Basel together with DayOne - Healthcare Innovation and Personalised Health Basel had the privilege to engage with entrepreneurs in the space of personalized health. Three different entrepreneurs from the local ecosystem shared their journey, the USB explained how to work with hospitals for data and clinician feedback and then 7 new entrepreneurs shared their idea to receive the greatest gift of all - feedback. The journey input showed the diversity of choices and approaches in developing an entrepreneurial solution. Christian Ruiz from Moonlight AI - showed the value of the ecosystem having worked with DayOne, IO and USB to help develop and expand their solution. They are now well on the way on the long journey to prove clinical value. Sebastian Mathias Keller, PhD from Rekonas - told their story of bootstrapping (thank you innosuisse and friends) to build research based solutions that use EEG as a platform. They are building what could be a suite of applications for the market whilst at the same time contributing research to the field. Roberto Iannone from Zoundream - shared the challenges of being a startup founder and CEO and also that for all the challenges he wouldn't be anywhere else. Knowing himself well enough to know he wasn’t meant for the corporate world was the beginning of his journey as an entrepreneur. Jens Eckstein and Bram Stieltjes then shared how University Hospital Basel can help you to get data and feedback on your solution to help understand how it can fit into the world of clinicians. We then had 7 startup pitches asking for support with insights, connections and expert advice. We look forward to hearing how these ideas and startups develop over the coming years. Shoutout to Julian Kempf, Maks Kasprzyk and team for their first pitch outside their course. Shout out to Swiss EP - Swiss Entrepreneurship Program who bought the global to GEW and their startups from Kosovo and North Macedonia. 🚀 Let’s continue the entrepreneurial spirit in healthcare. 🚀 Ursula Costa Raffaello Ferone Cristina Golfieri Saara Malkamäki #HealthcareInnovation #Entrepreneurship #Collaboration #DayOne

👴 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲? 🧓 👦✨Longevity is quite the buzz-word nowadays, with prominent names investing and thriving to find the secret treatment and innovation to prolong the human lifespan. But is longevity really 'just' about living longer? 😃📢 𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗴𝘂𝗲, 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆. But how can we actually influence how we age healthily? What are the findings from research and what can we learn from communities with exceptionally high numbers of centennials - the so called 'Blue Zones' eg. in Sardinia? 🌏👩🎓 🙋♀️💬 We will discuss these points and questions during the upcoming 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗔𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆. We invite you to hear from experts in different disciplines, what we actually know or don't know (yet) about the aging process and hope to unveil some of the mystery behind longevity and healthy aging. 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 🌍💡 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘢, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳-𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦? Yesterday, the Innovation Office University of Basel had the privilege of joining the Swiss Re Institute Resilience Summit 2024, masterfully organized by Christoph Nabholz and his team (with a special mention to Kai Zhang). Thanks to the special mix of diverse industries, public and private perspectives and actors, this platform provides a truly unique setting! 🔍 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘀 WHO ADG Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu highlighted that the need for collective action is more urgent than ever. Disease surveillance systems like the #EIOS are crucial, yet they require global partnerships to make sense of the millions of data points generated daily. It's not just about identifying threats, it's about building sustainable systems that are prepared to act swiftly and equitably. 🧬 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗻 & 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 Swiss Re Natalie Kelly underscored the stagnation of life expectancy in regions like the UK and US, while countries like Japan and China continue to improve. Lifestyle, nutrition, and chronic disease management are key, especially in nations known for strong healthcare systems. Even in Switzerland, with its advanced health infrastructure, metabolic health is an area where public-private partnerships can make a transformative impact. 🔗 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 One of the most thought-provoking discussions revolved around the use of technology to drive health behavior change. From continuous glucose monitoring to more personalized nutrition advice, how can we empower individuals to take control of their health in a meaningful way? If “Amazon knows more about your shoe preferences than a doctor might know about your chemotherapy needs” it's time to bridge this gap for better health outcomes. 🚀 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 We were especially proud to see our SPEARHEAD project take center stage, with Swiss Re as a key partner (Florian Rechfeld). We could highlight our achievement in improving AMR stewardship via digital tools, AI, better diagnostics, and citizen engagement. Thanks to Saara Malkamäki, Julia Bielicki and the whole project team! Special thanks to Swiss Re Institute for creating a platform where critical conversations meet actionable solutions. Have a look at a few highlights below and if you want to know more about our partnership with Swiss RE, feel free to reach out! #HealthResilience #InnovationEcosystem #PublicPrivatePartnerships #DigitalHealth #SustainableImpact
