🌿 Finance - the catalyst for a nature-positive future 🌿 Following the COP16 negotiations and the lack of success to align on a global finance roadmap for #nature, Building Bridges 2024 arrives at a pivotal moment. Can finance evolve to support, rather than undermine, the ecosystems all lives depend on? By most measures*, populations of plants and animals are collapsing, and they have been for decades. Coral reefs are disappearing, as are tropical forests. Animals are going extinct. It’s bleak. The Centre for Sustainable Finance and the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) calls for finance that regenerates, moving beyond "business as usual" by embedding the true value of natural capital into investment practices. Shifting away from the $1.8 trillion in harmful subsidies that continue to support unsustainable sectors** is fundamental to narrow the biodiversity finance gap. But many other financial mechanisms must be implemented. Building Bridges is an opportunity to move into practical steps, making finance a catalyst for a sustainable, nature-positive future. 🔗 To prepare for the summit, read the case of the @Cambridge Institute for Sustainability leadership: “Scaling Finance for Nature: Barrier Breakdown” https://lnkd.in/eF3RUqUw Building Bridges 2024 📍Rue de Varembé 17, Geneva, Switzerland 📅10.12.24 to 12.12.24 🎟️Register now to attend : https://lnkd.in/eWvRKjwJ #NaturePositive #FinanceForNature #sustainableinvestment #Biodiversity #finance #NatureIsEveryonesBusiness *https://lnkd.in/dzaVK3Ah ** https://lnkd.in/gJNqvwYJ

📚 The real impact of academic research: a wind of change on business schools benches 📚 How do we anticipate challenges and come up with the best solutions to our problems? Short answer is: research. We gather data, we assess, we compare, and we make enlightened decisions based on results. There is no “building a better world” without studies and research. But what is the point of research if it has no impact on the world it studies and remains confined to academic circles? InTent has been supporting the latest Financial Times report on business institutions, which explores the impact of individual academics’ work and, by extension, their institutions. This unique ranking of business schools tracks academic rigour, explores resonance beyond academia and assesses the influence of academic research on learning. By valuing research that truly impacts the most pressing global issues, we move closer to facing them. 🎥 Watch “Essentielles” - InTent’s newest short doc, in collaboration with the Givaudan Foundation. 🌱Climate change paired with recent regulations and restrictions in farming practices are challenging the lavender producers of Provence to make ends meet. In this context, some farmers are implementing nature-based solutions, leveraging nature-inspired ecosystems to increase their crops resilience. Patrice is one of them. He’s been experimenting with crop canopies long before regulations pushed him to do so. 🤝In “Essentielles”, we witness a promising transformation at play in lavender fields, which is made possible by a resilient network of collaborations between farmers, scientists and the perfume industry. A collective story of success is in writing. 📅 Save the date for Building Bridges 2024! 📅 On December 10th, join InTent during 2024 Building Bridges #Action Days and discuss how finance can better align with a sustainable future. 💰Closing the finance gap It is estimated that at least $200 billion are needed annually by 2030 to protect and restore ecosystems worldwide. Despite great efforts from negotiators during the recent #COP16 discussions in Colombia, progress on the matter stalled. Some countries advocated for a new fund, while others expressed concerns about fragmentation given the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund already exists. No decisions were reached as the COP16 meeting was suspended due to the lack of quorum. ⚠️ Environmentally-harmful subsidies Much more needs to happen on the reform of environmentally harmful subsidies estimated at $2.6 trillion / year. One key barrier to corporate action is that the economic system rewards short-term profit over long-term value creation – therefore unintentionally incentivizing and rewarding businesses to over-exploit instead of using those resources to support the transition. #Business and #finance must be part of the efforts to move away from environmentally harmful subsidies that skew resource allocation and distort prices. Like governments, they need to identify which subsidies they benefit from and engage with key stakeholders to develop a roadmap to redirect resources to the right places. Following COP16, Building Bridges 2024 in a great opportunity to continue the discussions on this pressing financial agenda and align finance with #sustainability. Register to Building Bridges 2024 and take part in the movement! 📍 Rue de Varembé 17, Geneva, Switzerland 📅 Monday, 9th December to Thursday, 12th December 🎟️ https://lnkd.in/eWvRKjwJ #BuildingBridges24 #naturepositive #biodiversity #COP16 #sustainability #ItsNowForNature #NatureIsEveryonesBusiness

Now more than ever, political leadership is crucial in halting and reversing nature loss. As we return from the UN Biodiversity #COP16 in Cali, we know the ultimate success of the Global Biodiversity Framework lies in the national and regional implementation of its goals and targets. Next week’s parliamentary vote on the EU Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR) will be a pivotal moment to demonstrate the #EU’s commitment to the agenda. There is significant support from companies for this regulation (including Michelin, Tony's Chocolonely, Mars, Danone, the Cocoa coalition that includes Nestlé, Unilever, Ferrero and many more - see comment below). Yet after years of preparation, it is concerning to now witness the option of delaying its implementation, and even potentially reopening the content of the regulation. Today, I’m joining many others to urge Members of the European Parliament not to sign off on these proposals. Global #deforestation has been estimated at 10 million hectares each year. Land-use change is the main driver of biodiversity loss worldwide, with 75% of the world’s land surface already significantly altered. The EUDR is an important tool to ensure that nature protection, climate change mitigation and human rights protection become the new business as usual for companies. Binding due diligence legislation is urgently needed to eliminate legal and illegal deforestation and conversion of natural ecosystems across key forest-risk commodities as foreseen in the #EUDR. Find out more about binding due diligence legislation here: https://lnkd.in/ewBUdN3g Many companies have been preparing for the EUDR and have invested in compliance audits, supplier engagement and advanced traceability technologies to build deforestation-free supply chains. Delaying the regulation would create an uneven playing field: the businesses that acted responsibly would be disadvantaged, while those that delayed action would benefit. It would also send the wrong message about the EU’s commitment, create confusion and affect the credibility of adopted EU legislations, at a time when businesses need policy certainty and clarity. An enabling environment coupled with regulatory certainty will foster innovation, transform business models, mobilize investment and ensure companies are held accountable for their actions and performance. Ahead of #COP16, 230 leading businesses called on the EU and governments around the world to demonstrate immediate leadership to strengthen – not weaken – the policies, incentives and legislation that will drive the necessary business action to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030. Find out more about the 230 leading businesses calling on the EU and governments around the world here: https://bit.ly/Bizstament Businesses are asking for political leadership, and this means maintaining the EUDR in its current form and with the originally intended implementation dates. We are counting on you! Manfred Weber Peter Liese
