Are you working on a research project which would benefit from collaborating with an ISSI staff member, with other ISSI visitors, or with researchers nearby in #Switzerland? The ISSI Visiting Scientist programme enables short-duration visits to ISSI to conduct research based on data from space-based observatories or space missions. The programme is open to all scientists, regardless of career stage, nationality or institutional affiliation. Small groups of two or three individuals, who would like to meet at ISSI to pursue collaborative work in space science or Earth observation, are also welcome to apply. This is an open call and the submissions are assessed on a quarterly basis (March 1, June 1, September 1, December 1). Next deadline is: December 1, 2024. Details and applications: https://lnkd.in/ehpCuiXk

Two Distinct Current Systems in the #Ionosphere of #Mars https://lnkd.in/eCuFFQNF A recent study by ISSI International Team 582, led by Wenya Li (National Space Science Center, CAS, China) and André Galli (University of Bern International, Switzerland), reveals two unique current systems within Mars' ionosphere. Utilizing eight years of #MAVEN mission data, the researchers identified currents driven by #SolarWind and atmospheric neutral winds. These systems highlight Mars' complex ionospheric dynamics, influenced by external solar forces and internal atmospheric winds, illuminating mechanisms of atmospheric ion escape that contribute to understanding planetary #ClimateEvolution and #Habitability. Plasma Acceleration in Near-Earth Space Watch here the recording with Vassilis Angelopoulos talking about #spaceweather Near-Earth space is filled with energetic ions and electrons of multi-MeV energy, which can damage sensitive satellite components and harm humans in space. The energy comes from the Sun’s outbursts of plasmas, the dynamic solar wind, but it is focused and amplified in Earth’s magnetized space environment, the magnetosphere. The tug of war between the solar wind and our magnetized planet drives the dynamic auroras, Earth’s radiation belts, and affects our atmosphere. Space weather is a major field of study for space agencies around the world. https://lnkd.in/epd8wkWd

"Plasma Acceleration in Near-Earth Space" Mark your calendars for the live webinar with Vassilis Angelopoulos (@UCLA, Los Angeles, USA) 🗓️Thursday, 24th October 2024 (17h CEST | 11h EDT) Near-Earth space is filled with energetic ions and electrons of multi-MeV energy, which can damage sensitive satellite components and harm humans in space. Modeling and predicting radiation particle fluxes is still in its infancy. We have recently learned that like their close-kin, substorms, the large space storms are powered by magnetotail reconnection outflows. All Details: https://lnkd.in/ecRZYJ6J
