Dr Pip Clery, University College London (UCL), won the 2024 Royal College of Psychiatrists International Congress poster prize (Research category) for her study: The association between outdoor ambient temperature and depression and mania: an ecological momentary assessment study. The poster was presented in June in Edinburgh, UK.
Working with researchers from UCL and juli, Dr Clery used data gathered from juli users with depression and bipolar disorder. She found a reduction in depressive symptoms and increase in manic symptoms for every degree increase in temperature, after accounting for other weather features and personal characteristics. This is the first study of its kind to use geolocated weather data, at scale, to investigate the effects of climate on mental health. At juli we are very proud to enable and support this kind of research.
