In the next installment covering our recent event in London that discussed the topic of ‘Treating Nature and Nature Investment as an Asset Class’, we consider why we must act now to protect our natural resources. Speaking as one of our panellists, we heard from Marc Palahí from Lombard Odier Investment Managers explaining that "If nature is our most important ecological infrastructure, it is also our most important economic infrastructure." Hosted in collaboration with 100 Women In Finance, the event gathered members of this network of finance professionals committed to building a more diverse and gender equitable finance industry by promoting diversity of thought, visibility and empowering women to find their personal path to success. Watch the video to find out what happens when we cross the planetary boundaries. #TheCitcoWay #Sustainability #ESG #WomenInFinance #Biodiversity #Nature

What if we could combat climate change by consuming more, not less? Using coffee production as a case study, this was the question that Morten Rossé, Head of Nature and Climate at Lombard Odier Investment Managers, posed to delegates at the DG Publishing Private and Public Pensions Summit in Surrey last week. Deforestation and chemical use see monoculture coffee crops generate an average of 14.6 CO2 equivalent per kilogram of product*. And this model is vulnerable to increasing temperatures, with a 35% drop in production is expected by 2050 on current trends. But monocultures can be transformed into net absorbers of carbon through a nature-based approach. By integrating tree species to provide cooling and protective canopy layers, supporting insects that function as natural pesticides, improving soil health by removing chemical inputs, and increasing biodiversity by attracting native animals, these crops help restore the climate and nature, one cup at a time. By securing corporate offtakers and managing coffee production, distribution and retail in a regenerative value chain, an attractive real-asset opportunity can be structured for investors. Why is restoring soil health important for the global economy? On World Soil Day, we highlight the vital role that soils play in commodity value chains. Sustainable practices that end soil degradation can boost the quantity and quality of raw materials, lower production costs and increase profits. At Lombard Odier Investment Managers, we advocate for a paradigm shift where natural capital is recognised as a measurable, investable asset class. Healthy soils are a cornerstone of this strategy. As the world speeds up, we instinctively move faster. Is this the right response? With pivotal forces – from the US-China rivalry, the generative AI tech breakthrough and the inevitable climate transition – reshaping the corporate landscape, we believe investors need to challenge this instinct. By taking pause, separating valuable facts from noise and rethinking opportunity sets, they can move forward with conviction. By slowing down, investors gain the clarity needed to get ahead.
