All articles in Children MDPI (ISSN: 2227-9067) Vol 11, Issue 10, are now freely available to access, read and download: https://brnw.ch/21wOMvk COVER STORY: Research from the University of Chieti and Casa di Cura Igea S.p.A. studied acute respiratory failure (ARF), a sudden failure of the respiratory system to ensure adequate gas exchanges. Numerous clinical conditions may cause ARF, including pneumonia, obstructive lung diseases (e.g., asthma), restrictive diseases such as neuromuscular diseases (e.g., spinal muscular atrophy and muscular dystrophy), and albeit rarely, interstitial lung diseases. Children, especially infants, may be more vulnerable to ARF than adults due to anatomical and physiological features of the respiratory system. Assessing respiratory impairment in the pediatric population is particularly challenging, as children frequently present difficulties in reporting symptoms due to compliance and cooperation in diagnostic tests. A new study published in the Open Access journal Quaternary MDPI looks at how early Neanderthals enjoyed the simple joy of collecting things, as many people still enjoy till day. The study, cited in Popular Science, describes the assembly and composition of artefacts recovered from Level 4 of the Prado Vargas Cave in Spain. The items included marine fossils of various shapes. An intense analysis of the artefacts revealed that the items held no utilitarian purpose, suggesting that the Neanderthals had a simple artistic curiosity about the objects. This research provides the first evidence of Neanderthals illustrating an interest in collecting items, which remains a behaviour still present in modern humans today.
