Info
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is the world's leading independent international medical relief organization, implementing and managing medical projects in close to 72 countries worldwide and as a worldwide movement of 25 associations, 24 sections, 17 offices and 6 operational entities. Our work focuses on emergency medical and humanitarian relief. We are guided by the principles of independence, neutrality and impartiality, as described in the MSF Charter. We implement our medical programs in areas where no health or sanitary systems exist, or where health structures are overwhelmed by the needs of populations. For 50 years, we have been providing medical assistance to people affected by armed conflicts, natural disasters, disease epidemics, malnutrition crises and other emergencies. We offer medical and humanitarian assistance to people based on their needs - irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation. We observe neutrality in situations of conflict, and impartiality in the name of medical ethics. To ensure our independence, the majority of our funding is provided by private donations from members of the public. Additional funding may come from foundations, governments and international institutions.

Community engagement is a key element to serving the Yanomami people in northern Brazil. ⤵️ With support from the Indigenous public health system, we’re going into communities in the Auaris region of the Yanomami territory to bring access to health care closer to the people. The Yanomami Indigenous Land is the largest Indigenous territory in the country, and in recent years the people have been struggling with a health crisis linked to a handful of factors, including environmental degradation caused by illegal mining. Not only have traditional fishing and hunting areas been damaged and disturbed, contributing to food insecurity, but the land has been scarred by holes that fill with rainwater, creating ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes and to the spreading of malaria. With malaria cases on the rise severely affecting the population, our goal is to reduce the number of cases through prevention methods, spreading educational awareness, and diagnosing and treating people in need.

Obstacles to maternity care in northwest Syria: Historically, women had access to numerous hospitals and clinics for maternal health care, but many of these facilities have been destroyed by overall violence and bombardment. Now, women rely on a small number of functional facilities that offer prenatal and postnatal care that are often far from their homes. Traveling is not only an expense, but it directly puts women and new mothers in danger of facing security risks, getting caught in crossfire, or becoming victims of violence.

Living with #diabetes is challenging, no matter where you live. Now imagine being on the move, seeking safety for you and your family, with little or no access to treatment. Anis, a #refugee with type 2 #diabetes who fled war in Syria to reach safety in Greece, received #insulin in pens from MSF. “The pen is definitely easier. The pen is necessary.” Learn about his story and two others, Amina and Ghassan, here: https://lnkd.in/d5sWFC9f

It’s World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week! As pathogens become more resistant to drugs, many antibiotics are becoming ineffective. As governments try to lure pharma corporations back into producing new antibiotics through research and development (R&D) incentives, it’s important to structure incentives that prioritise timely, equitable and affordable access to new antibiotics. Read our recent report on the need for improved surveillance, testing, infection control, antibiotic stewardship, funding and global commitments for AMR solutions in humanitarian settings 📊 #WAAW2024 #AntimicrobialResistance #antibiotic #AMR #WorldAntimicrobialAwarenessWeek https://lnkd.in/dJAi39_2

Doctors in Sudan are every day in a situation where they know the best care they can provide is not the best care possible… unimaginable. Especially when so many of your patients are children in need of trauma care from gun shots and bomb blasts. One in six war-wounded patients at a hospital in south Khartoum are children. Children like Riyad, an 18-month-old who was shot by a stray bullet while sleeping at home. The Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) medical team was able to stabilise him, but the bullet remains in his chest. The hospital he is in cannot perform the advanced surgery needed, in part because of a supply blockage being needlessly imposed by the warring parties. And in other circumstances, Riyad would be transferred to a medical facility that can give him the treatment he needs. But these medical referrals are impossible now. Thank you to all the doctors in Sudan providing lifesaving care in these horrific circumstances. https://lnkd.in/erkEXXyB

"Every day that we cannot resume activities is a tragedy, as we are one of the few providers of a wide range of medical services that have remained open during this extremely difficult year. However, we can no longer continue operating in an environment where our staff is at risk of being attacked, raped, or even killed!" -Christophe Garnier, MSF head of mission in #Haiti.
It’s with a heavy heart that Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) / Doctors Without Borders has made the decision to suspend activities in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. A series of direct threats that Haitian police forces have made against our staff gives us no other choice. These threats came on the heels of an attack on an MSF ambulance on November 11 that resulted in the execution of at least two patients and physical harm to our staff. It’s never been harder for Haitian people to access desperately needed health care, and each day that passes without resuming our activities is a tragedy. As a medical humanitarian organization, we are used to working amid insecurity, but we cannot operate in an environment that puts our staff at risk of being attacked. MSF has worked in Haiti for more than 30 years, and we remain committed to people there. But we cannot resume work in Port-au-Prince unless we are guaranteed security and respect for our medical humanitarian work from armed groups, members of vigilante groups, and police. https://lnkd.in/eBHDrwBn

At Al Hamshari Hospital in Lebanon, our teams are providing essential trainings so that doctors and nurses are better prepared to treat severely injured patients arriving to the emergency room. In collaboration with other partners, our teams have conducted similar trainings in 10 different hospitals across Lebanon with over 400 staff members since October 2023. Since the war in Gaza began in October 2023, Hezbollah and Israeli forces have been exchanging fire across the border between southern #Lebanon and northern Israel. The violence escalated dramatically when Israel launched coordinated pager and walkie-talkie explosions in Beirut and other parts of Lebanon on September 18 and 19, before launching a full-scale military assault on September 23. To date, more than 2,000 people have been killed and about 10,000 wounded.
