CREATING PUBLIC VALUE THROUGH AI-POWERED MICROWAVE-ASSISTED MOLECULAR RECYCLING #3: JOIN US REBALANCING What if we treated everything as a potential resource; every output as a potential input to something else? This is the fundamental question the circular economy concept addresses as a way to meet our needs sustainably, using the resources available on the planet.  Innovation, new levels of collaboration and partnering, novel business models and cross-sector thinking are the motors of this evolution. ‘Green deals’ will push early adopting countries towards developing a comparative advantage in advanced green technologies. There is nothing intrinsic in the concept of growth that makes it incompatible with environmental protection. As a result of changing production and consumption patterns, green deals will redraw completely the map of trade and investment relations between countries, influence geopolitics, and rebalance economic winners and losers. As production and consumption change, comparative advantages shift, and the wealth of nations will be defined and contended on this new technological terrain. Utilising those rebalancing effects on competitiveness across the globe - overcoming distributional inequalities in natural resources and environmental degradation - while ensuring equal access to the new technologies, that is the unique opportunity we are having now. to make green industrial revolution just. Accessible for everyone, everywhere - whatever the location, affordability to pay or educational level - is a fundamental design principle of our AI-powered molecular recycling solution (Microwave Solutions GmbH): Modular, mobile, containerised, profitable at all scales and easy to operate. Access to and the ability to master technological knowhow in the production methods of the future while using waste as resource will inevitably allow everyone to be part of a just green industrial revolution. Microwave Solutions GmbH with it's AI-powered and microwave assisted molecular recycling solution has been nominated for the Public Value Award. The Public Value Award recognizes public value-oriented start-ups that create a benefit for society with their offers and services and thus make a measurable contribution to the common good. CREATING PUBLIC VALUE THROUGH AI-POWERED MICROWAVE-ASSISTED MOLECULAR RECYCLING #2: JOIN US DECENTERING If you ask me what is the ultimate model for creating public value tomorrow, my answer is without a doubt: the ability to decide today as if future generations matter. This approach is called "decentration”. The ability to spend one’s life preserving conditions conducive to future lives on the planet. If the question is whether the circular economy - in its current approach - will fully embrace this notion, the answer is undoubtedly: not quite. Unless you design solutions that are accessible for everyone - irrespective of geography, affordability, company size, waste streams to be processed or secondary raw materials required. Our solution design? Mobile, modular, containerised - thus easy to move around, to share, to scale up and down. Agnostic to feedstocks and secondary raw materials of interest. Cost-efficient at all scales and easy to operate for everyone. JOIN US COMMONING Since the 1970's, humankind has been running an ecological deficit in terms of its impact on the environment. Today, the global economy uses the equivalent of 1.7 planets to produce global output and absorb waste. Large-scale environmental damages include biodiversity loss, land degradation, depletion of stocks of finite resources, and climate change. The environment damage caused could become irreversible or even reach tipping points where self-reinforcing feedback loops produce above-proportionate effects. Waste, pollution and environmental degradation due to resource extraction and production are negative externalities – the external cost are passed on to society and future generations, there is an incentive to extract and produce more than is socially and environmentally optimal.   Positive externalities are the other side of the coin. These include production choices that have a positive effect on an unrelated third party or society. There is a disincentive to make investments of this kind. Public goods are non-rivalry and non-exclusive in the sense that the enjoyment of a clean environment by one person does not happen from enjoying.   @ Microwave Solutions GmbH we refute the assumption that excessive negative externalities and the under provision of this critical public good are unavoidable and that the shared use of natural resources is bound to lead to a “tragedy of the commons“. We believe that self-organised sustainable collective action is possible as a mode of governance besides the state and the market, that self-organised sustainable collective is required to lead change at the pace and scale we need, that self-organised sustainable collective action as the basis for a climate-smart and just transformation is a question of solution design.   Our solution design? Cost-efficient at all scales without requiring green price premiums – making the production and use of secondary raw materials attractive. A modular and mobile design, allowing local and supply chain specific collaborative approaches. Feedstock and product agnostic – enabling shared infrastructure models and adaptation. Equipment supply versus a service provision – allowing collaboration across all value chains, industries, and communities, integration into/ upgrades of already existing infrastructure as well as scale and pace. Electrified and emission-free, solving a problem versus reallocating it. THE FUTURE OF CHEMICAL RECYCLING: PRECISE AND SELECTIVE BREAKAGE, FEEDSTOCK AGNOSTIC The need for secondary raw materials by type, in quality and scale, as well as environmental imperatives are driving the development of technologies for the chemical recycling of polymeric waste. The cover story of the November issue of Chemical Engineering Magazine provides an overview of the challenges of current technologies and the innovation unlocking circular material flows (link to the article in the comments). Marcian Lee from Lux Research is pointing out the problem of current technologies: imprecise, low yield of targeted secondary raw materials but a wide range of hydrocarbons of random lengths when breaking the polymer, technoeconomic inviability. I would add: dependence on selected and pre-processed waste streams resulting in high waste prices and reduced volumes of feedstock, only very selected raw materials possible. The future will be defined by nextgeneration technologies, where polymer chains are broken down in a more precise and targeted way. Further on - because many waste streams consist of mixed plastics with contaminants and additives - there is keen interest in recycling processes that can accommodate a broad range of feedstocks. Catalysts could improve product specificity, but they are adding complexity and cost. Solvolysis could use chemicals to cleave polymer linkages, however does not work for polyolefins containing waste streams. Enzymatic depolymerization and dissolution are highly selective to the waste processed and secondary raw materials which could be produced. That puts the spotlight on thermochemical approaches including the application of microwaves as a method of energy transfer. While some approaches are just using microwaves as heat source, technologies like our AI-powered molecular recycling (Microwave Solutions GmbH) are using the advantage of an electrically powered process, too, but even more important the microwaves as a method of energy transfer for selective and preferential energy absorption and excitement of molecules and polymer bonds. AI-powered molecular recycling by Microwave Solutions GmbH is not only a pioneering approach in molecular recycling - in commercial application for the molecular recycling of Acrylics already back in 1997, it has as well an unprecedented footprint as a versatile technology with more than 250 use cases across materials (liquids, gases, composites, all densities and sizes, contaminated, layered), secondary raw materials (such as monomers, fillers and fibres), and industries. Through the combination of depolymerisation, dissociation and nucleation and the multi-phase design, it has most likely the broadest rage of secondary raw materials which could be produced at the same time. #chemicalrecycling #circulareconomy #sustainability #innovation
