Info
The NCD Alliance (NCDA) is a registered non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Geneva, Switzerland, dedicated to supporting a world free from preventable suffering, disability and death caused by noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Founded in 2009, NCDA brings together a unique network of over 300 members in more than 80 countries into a respected, united and credible global civil society movement. The movement is unified by the cross-cutting nature of common risk factors including unhealthy diets, harmful use of alcohol, tobacco smoking, air pollution and physical inactivity, and the system solutions for chronic NCDs such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic lung disease, diabetes, mental health and neurological disorders.

🕊️In loving memory of Dr Vicki Pinkney Atkinson & Charity Muturi - two passionate NCD advocates, whom we lost last year When Dr Joseph Kibachio, Medical Advisor for NCDs & Mental Health, WHO was introducing a memorial video and recalled his memories of them, he quoted Vicki Pinkney Atkinson "We are not trying to live forever but we are trying to build something that will stay forever [for people living with NCDs]." Your work and inspiration live on! #NCDAF2025

The increasing burden of noncommunicable diseases—including cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic diseases, as well as mental health conditions—is pushing Africa’s health care systems to their limits. By 2030, #NCDs are expected to account for 46% of all fatalities in Africa, marking the largest increase in NCD-related mortality globally. Early screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up are essential for ensuring timely, equitable, and integrated care for NCDs. Improving these pathways will enhance health outcomes, reduce inefficiencies, and support the resilience of health systems. On Saturday, February 15, this #NCDAF2025 session will explore how integrated patient pathways improve health care outcomes and build resilient health systems. The discussion will also set the stage for the 2025 United Nations High-Level Meeting on NCDs and #MentalHealth and contribute to the development of updated World Health Organization NCD guidelines. 👉 https://bit.ly/41dI4rE Ministry of Health - Uganda AMREF NCD Alliance

Yesterday afternoon, we had one more block of enlightening discussions at #NCDAF2025 and we talked about: 💡 The role of civil society in the national NCD response in the lead-up to the High-Level Meeting on NCDs. 🗨️ "Without civil society, there will be no effective or meaningful NCD response in any country" - Bent Lautrup-Nielsen. The session was hosted by World Diabetes Foundation 💡 Reduction of the burden of #chroniclungdisease and other tobacco-related health problems. 🗨️ “Building capacity in primary care is key for people living with chronic respiratory diseases” - Guy Fones, Director of WHO NCD Department. The session was organised by International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union). 💡Integrated care. 🗨️ "It's important to #LeadOnNCDs and also to be led - to build partnerships. I am always asking different disease communities - what are your joint messages?" - Dr. Nick Banatvala, UN Interagency Task Force on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases. The session was organised by Boehringer Ingelheim. 💡Designing & financing effective, accessible, and fully integrated NCD interventions. 🗨️ "We need to focus on investment in prevention. It’s easy. It’s cheap. It’s doable. We need to be working with people living with NCDS, ensuring they are our mouthpiece. We should never get tired of awareness." - Dr Mary Amuyunzu-Nyamongo, NCD Alliance, Kenya. The session was hosted by the Government of Scotland & NCDI Poverty Network.

Treatment for noncommunicable diseases and mental health (NCDs/MH) places a significant financial burden on families and exposes people to advanced complications. Despite this evidence, domestic and global investment in NCDs/MH has remained static or decreased. Tomorrow at #NCDAF2025, this satellite session will bring together multisectoral players working to increase the accessibility and affordability of NCD/MH medicines and health products. ➡️ https://bit.ly/3CZRKfS United for Global Mental Health | IDA Foundation | Blue Circle Diabetes Foundation | World Health Organization | NCD Alliance #ActOnNCDs #MentalHealthForAll

This morning at #NCDAF2025 we discussed: 🎙️ Forging stronger frameworks for NCD care transformation on the road to the UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs. 🗨️ "The East Africa Community Framework ensures that no country is left behind. Regional collaboration strengthens our position globally as we speak with one voice. This helps us advocate for domestic resources. - Itete Karagire, East African Community. The session was hosted by Roche. 🎙️ The vital role of multistakeholder partnerships in ensuring sustainable NCD response - between civil society, government, private sector and academia. 💬 "We are all on the same team" - Braden Remington, Direct Relief. 💬 "First and foremost we need to build partnerships with Ministries of Health and your interventions need to be integrated into the government programmes to ensure sustainability. When one of the partners leaves, the programmes need to continue." - added Prof. Kaushik Ramaiya, Tanzania Diabetes Association. The session was organised by Direct Relief. 🎙️ Solutions for psoriasis disease treatment. 💬 “You go to the hospital with hope, seeking a solution, but health workers think they’ll get infected. There’s so much misinformation.” Hellen Wangui Gathere, living with psoriasis, on the urgent need for better education, and faster diagnosis. The session was hosted by IFPA. 🎙️ Innovative financing and opportunities to unlock new financing for NCDs. 💬 “If leadership is there, then the money follows. Look at different ways of working to align around the right of people to access health care. Imperative for financing, we know we have a phenomenal return on investments, 19/1" - Kimberly Green, PATH / NCD Coalition. The session was co-organised by Novo Nordisk and IFPMA. 🎙️ Catalisation of a social movement to address obesity. 💬 "The industry has a lot of money, but we have something much more valuable: commitment, ethics, the ability to act, and the motivation to protect our children, friends, and families. That cannot be bought with money. We need a change in the food system. It is time to transform our systems.” - Diego Rodriguez, Uruguay NCD Alliance. The session was hosted by World Obesity Federation.
