    Exciting results published from Prof. Hu's group at EPFL showing that by using NovaMea's AEM, an AEM water electrolysis can be operated at an ultrahigh current density of 10 A/cm2 for more than 800 hours. In general, the electrolyzers using our AEMs have 10,000 times higher stability than the electrolyzers using other AEMs at this current density. These findings are yet another demonstration of the superior properties of our membranes.

    The idea of this paper is meant to be provocative: Can and should we run water electrolysis at an ultrahigh current density such as 10 A/cm2? PEM and AEM electrolyzers operate at 1.5-3 A/cm2, which is already 5-10 times higher than the classic alkaline electrolyzers. In this study, we show that using a best-in-class membrane, the operational life time of an AEM electrolyzer running at 10 A/cm2 can be increased by 10,000 times. Coupled with interfacial engineering, we can achieve operation at this current density for 800 hours. Operating an electrolyzer at ultrahigh current densities is very demanding for both materials and devices, and 800 hours are still shy of the 10000+ hours of stability a practical device needs. But the rewards are a huge boost in hydrogen production rate and a great means to consume green electricity when it overloads the grid.
