At the end of October 2024, the ‘Wellbeing & Cohesion’ Cluster gathered for its second meeting to review and discuss progress across its four research projects: ·     Pandemic Control in Nursing Homes ·     Loneliness Prevention ·     Social Relationships During a Pandemic ·     Intergenerational Cohesion The teams shared their intermediate findings and presented the next steps of their research. In a discussion lead by Tom Postmes, chair of the cluster, the groups also brainstormed effective dissemination and communication strategies for sharing results with broader audiences, as well as the importance of stakeholder engagement to ensure research outcomes are placed in a broader context and have a real impact. This meeting reinforced the value of cross-project collaboration and the ongoing need for a global approach to address social challenges, enhance wellbeing, and foster community resilience. The “Work” cluster of NRP 80 held its second meeting at the end of October 2024. The research projects “Domestic Workers and Covid-19,” “Urban Essential Workers,” and “Fair and Beneficial Home-Working” presented their intermediate findings to key stakeholders from the Federal Social Insurance Office (FSIO), the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), and Gesundheitsförderung Schweiz. The presentations sparked lively discussions, moderated by Mathilde Bourrier, Chair of the “Work” cluster. The focus was on the practical applications of these initial results and potential recommendations. The meeting concluded with an online presentation by Laia Tarragona and Elena Ghidoni, who shared insights from the European project RESISTIRÉ, titled “Essential and Forgotten: Domestic Work and the Impact of Policy Responses During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Spain and Italy”. Their talk offered valuable perspectives complementing the cluster’s research themes. This exchange will continue and already lays the groundwork for disseminating the final results, which will be available at the conclusion of the programme. Thank you all for your participation! The research team emphasizes the importance of emergency plans and their regular practice, as well as the standardized use of learning platforms in the cantons to enable swift implementation when needed. The Covid-19 #pandemic left lasting economic scars, pushing more people in Switzerland dangerously close to the #poverty line. #Caritas St. Gallen-Appenzell has witnessed a dramatic increase in demand for support. The Caritas Markets saw a 40% rise in sales since the pandemic, reflecting the growing financial distress. While the cost of living continues to rise, many are struggling to make ends meet. #Vulnerable groups, including #children, the #elderly, and families with limited resources, are particularly affected. However, poverty does not discriminate—it crosses all age and social groups. In mid-September, the "Family & Law" cluster convened in Zurich for its second meeting. The project groups—“Digital Justice in Family Law,” “Domestic Violence,” and “Child Protection – Covid-19 and Beyond”—shared their preliminary findings on key issues. Topics included the use of digital platforms in family justice, the impact of containment measures on domestic violence, and how childcare has evolved during the pandemic. These initial results were thoroughly discussed and reflected upon with stakeholders from the Federal Social Insurance Office, the Swiss Federal Office of Justice, the Federal Chancellery, and the Eidgenössische Kommission für Familienfragen (EKFF) fostering a collaborative approach to addressing these matters. Additionally, the cluster provided an opportunity for the project groups to address current challenges of their research. The discussions were highly productive, marked by mutual support and a shared commitment to advancing the work. Thank you all for participating! This year at the Swiss Geoscience Meeting held at University of Basel our colleagues, Carole Ammann and Fiona Kauer, presented their research addressing key questions for urban research, with a focus on the Swiss context. Carole presented a critical reflection on the ongoing Swiss National Science Foundation SNSF- funded NRP80 Covid-19 in Society research project on 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱-𝟭𝟵 𝗼𝗻 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘁𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱. In her presentation, she critically reflected on the choices made in the various steps of the research over the past 1.5 years, raising questions such as how the voices of those affected by the pandemic can effectively be integrated into research. Furthermore, she explored the compromises researchers must navigate, and how ethical concerns are addressed within the structural constraints of neoliberal academia, including pressures like lack of time and staffing. Fiona presented her work on housing displacement in the #Zurich region, focusing specifically on what happens to displaced renters after redevelopment projects. Her presentation, titled “𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗗𝗼 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲?,” examined where displacement occurs within the study area and provided insights into the housing situation of displaced residents, shedding light on the broader implications for urban housing policies. We thank the organizers of an excellent instance to bring together the different approaches and knowledges regarding geography, planning, urban and housing studies emerging in Switzerland.

As part of the cluster meetings in autumn 2024, researchers from NRP 80 in the ‘Governance & economy’ cluster, led by Prof. Dr Winfried Koeniger, came together and presented their first interim results. The team from the ‘Swiss coronavirus policy and companies’ project analysed which effect the announcement of fiscal support policies had on Swiss companies. The ‘Covid-19, trade and labour’ project team took a close look at the job vacancy notice obligation in Switzerland. The ‘Swiss pandemic governance’ project investigated the extent to which political processes are prepared for a future crisis and the research team of the ‘Frontline work in humanitarian crises’ project analysed the experiences of frontline workers during the pandemic. Representatives of the Federal Chancellery, the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs and the Federal Administrative Court provided important feedback and questions on the interim results. The discussions on site were correspondingly very interesting. Many thanks to all participants for the dynamic dialogue.
