Thanks to Christian Walter for raising awareness about the important issue of PFAS - "forever chemicals." These substances pose a significant challenge to human health and the environment. At PAL System, we're working to provide solutions for PFAS analysis. How can we solve the "Forever Chemicals" challenge? Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), so called forever chemicals, are substances widely used in consumer goods and industry. They have made it to the limelight in recent years as they never decompose under natural conditions and hence gradually accumulate in nature. There is an increasingly apparent suspected link to fertility issues, thyroid problems, liver damage and cancer. PFAS can be found in saucepans, outdoor clothing, weatherproofing sprays, pesticides, tubings, refrigeration liquids, gaskets and many other applications. For the Lab science industry PFAS both pose challenges and opportunities: Challenges, because EU legislation wants to ban them and they need to be replaced in scientific instruments and particularly consumables within the next few years. The exact date is yet unclear. For Lab Science instruments (liquid handling equipment, recirculating chillers, cooled centrifuges, hydrogen proof reactors) this may require substantial development efforts. An opportunity, because PFAS control and elimination requires much testing. This is done by solid phase extraction (SPE) and Liquid Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry. Of course, instrumentation used has to be completely PFAS free as the maximal permissible PFAS level is in the ug per liter range. As scientists, we cannot ignore the potential threat PFAS pose to human health and the environment and must develop alternative solutions. As business people, we can exploit the opportunity and at the same time do our bit to make the world a better place.
